Could you please offer some opinions on this. It is driving me crazy. My husband and I are ttc. My period is due tomorrow. By chance I had a doctor's appointment last night. I had already done 3 tests (1 digital and 2 first response) and they were all positive (even at 3 days early). The doctor did an ultrasound and didn't see anything which he said was normal. I asked him to do a pg test to confirm and it was negative. He took blood, but I am not the patient type. So, I went out today and did another test(clear blue easy) - positive again. That's four positives. Why would his test be negative? I know I will find out soon enough, but I can't think of anything else. Thanks for reading!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

**UPDATE: Thank you all for the advice. Well the doctor called and my blood work confirmed positive. I know it is still early, but I am very excited. I have an appt for an ultrasound in 3 weeks. Keeping my fingers crossed.

You maybe, but at this stage an ultrasound maybe to soon. I heard of this before. The ultrsounds are not alway perfect. I know its hard, but be patient. My test were in the middle not light or dark enough. But I was pregnant. My level was very low so I was amount a good 8 wks before I could see it on a test. Its different for everyone. Good Luck! Take it easy. :)

You are pregnant. The dr.'s test was just not sensitive enough. I know with Clear Blue specially, if it is positive it is true. There is no false positive, the only way these tests can be wrong if it doesn't pick up on the hormone and shows negative when it should be positive (sort of what the dr.'s test did). Congrats!!!

If it's only one day before you were expecting your period, then there is a chance that the hormones or whatever they're testing didnt build up enough YET to show up on a test. This happened to my sister, she had a positive home test, then went to the doctor and the doctors tests blood test too came back negative. Went back to doctor again two weeks later and then it was positive. Treat it as if you are pregnant just in case until you do get your period , better safe than sorry. Good chance that you are. :)

Many of the new pregnancy tests are very sensitive and will measure low levels of HcG. That is why they are now advertised that you can tell up to 5 days before your period is due. But some of the older tests required higher levels of HcG - - usually the amount you would have by the day of your first missed period. It is possible that your doctor has less expensive pregnancy tests in his office and thus, it is not as sensitive as the more expensive kinds you are using. Best to wait a few days (until at least a day or two after your period was due) and go in for a repeat blood test.... Also, on an ultrasound, you might see a sac early on, but you won't see a heartbeat until about 6 weeks at the earliest.

I'm also editing my response after reading some of the other posts. In particular, someone wrote that the pregnancy is not "viable" until at least 12 weeks. I'm not sure that is the correct terminology. Viability is the ability to live outside the womb, which is usally around 25 weeks (give or take a few days). Not to freak anyone out, but just because you make it to 12 weeks, doesn't mean you are going to deliver a live baby. I had a very normal pregnancy and lost the baby at 7 months...

Believe it or not, the test you purchase at CVS are more sensitive than the doctors office. However, the blood test is truly the only conclusive test.

Good luck and let us know.

It is very unusual to get a false positive HPT, and if you've had several positives, then you should conclude that you are pregnant. The blood test will surely confirm this. I question the ethics of a doctor who is doing ultrasound on a woman who has not skipped a period to look for a pregnancy.
Good luck.

Yes you are pregnant. There are false negatives, but no false positives. However, just because there is a viable heartbeat does not mean that you can't miscarry. I know someone who miscarried at 16wks. There was a viable heartbeart way before that. And I had a miscarriage at 9 wks and when I got pregnant with my daughter and had a ultrasound and we saw the baby at 6 wks, I was told flat out that it didn't mean it was a viable pregnancy until about 12 wks. So there are no real guarntees. But just enjoy this time in your life. Good luck and congradulations.

It's not unusual to have false negatives on the pee stick test, but it's unlikely you had false positives (unless you were reading it wrong, but again it's unlikely). You'll just have to wait for the blood test though to know for absolute sure. I'll say congrats anyway, because it sounds like you're preggers!

I really hope you are because it sounds like something you're yearning for and I wish you and your family-to-be health and happiness. But I want to ask you a question? With a bloos test, how long do you have to wait for the results? Reason why I'm asking is because I feel completely out of my body lately, had a very abnormal period and am feeling 'heavy'. I'm going today to take one and I wasn't sure how long it will take to get the results. I took two home preg-tests (E.P.T.) and they were negative but I just do't feel right. Please let me know what they told you. Good luck to you at the same time.

It's been my experience when you want something, you look for it and usually don't find exactly what you want, whether it's a job, a car, a man, or a baby. Whatever it is, ease up and you'll get what you want.
Example 1: I once knew a man who's wife had twins, but the twins, while born at the same time, were conceived a week apart. One was conceived by invitro and the other was the old fashioned way.
Example 2, also a true story: My cousin wanted to have a baby so badly, but all her previous attempts ended in miscarriages. She was heartbroken but decided to adopt the baby of a teenager who knew she could not take care of a baby so it was an open adoption. They were a family for only a short time before my cousin discovered she became pregnant, yet again. The age difference is about 11 months.
What I'm trying to say to you is to let it happen. Give it time and when God want's it to happen, you'll be blessed with a healthy baby. Don't try so hard because perfection is rarely achieved, but we should be happy with what we have anyway.
I wish you the very best in your quest, and please remember to just let it happen. Too much stress is not conducive to becoming pregnant.

Hi DD, I am not sure what ttc means and I am sure you are anxious... but if pregnant is what you want to be I guess you will need to wait for the answer. Pregnancy takes 9 months and I have not found a way to hurry that up. Good wishes, Grandma Mary (mother of 5)

Sheesh! You're not kidding, that would drive me crazy!

Maybe it's an empty sac? That's the only thing I can think of that would produce the hormones of pregnancy without an actual pregnancy.

Wish I had an answer for you. Just wanted to say I feel your anxst & would feel the same. I had the opposite problem in a way. I kept getting negatives on p. tests but I was convinced I was pregnant. Spent so much money trying again and again to see if I'd get a positive. I was so crazy about it, it was driving me nuts to be the only thing I kept thinking about.

Then FINALLY got a light positive (light 2nd line on the 1st response.. or maybe that was the Target brand?). Zipped into the OB office 2 days later and got it confirmed via sonogram. The sonogram is definitely the most accurate account, no matter how young it is. They gave me one b/c my 1st pregnancy miscarried (very devastating) and was considered high risk. But my 2nd pregnancy went relatively well and I have the best 13 month old in the world. And now, as suggested earlier, am pregnant again. (yipee, yikes!).

Just keep telling yourself all the things you know (it'll happen when its supposed to, etc) and eventually you'll believe it just enough to let you breathe a bit. And then you'll end up pregnant.

Is this your 1st? Anyway, best wishes. -N.

Goodmorning. You can't get a false positive. The blood test should show your hormone levels. When your pregnant your hormone levels go up and that's what detects if your pregnant or not.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I didn't believe the three pregnancy tests I'd taken either (we were not expecting to be expecting). I went to the doctor to have them take blood, and the nurse doing the test said to me that it was just a formality. If you got even one positive, then you are pregnant. We were- she was right. And- I think- so are you! Congratulations~ start taken your prenatals!

Doctors use the same kind of urine tests that we get in the store, only they don't usually use the ones that are for testing early. If your appointment was late in the day you probably didn't have much hcg built up in your urine to show a positive test. Please remember, there are no false positives, but there can be false negatives. Most likely you are pregnant.

Congratulations! You're pregnant! Don't worry about the docs tests...it's too soon. I love to see your eagerness...you're going to be great parents! Takes me back to taking the tests with my first...it is so exciting and almost shocking at the same time to see the positive result! I'm 5 months pregnant with my 5th child and am still in shock that it is real...haven't been to the doctor yet (can't get an appointment until the 24th, so I don't have the satisfaction of hearing the heartbeat or seeing the ultrasound yet)...but I feel the little babe moving every day so I know it's real! Enjoy this wonderful journey...pregnancy is a wonderful time!

Good morning D D.

ok i can give you a little insight on this one as my sister worked in the lab at a hospital.

the tests at the office arent the early detection kind. so they arent as sensetive as the home ones. dont worry about not seeing anything on the us, that is common too. your blood work should be back today so calm down, dont worry-everything will be fine.

It is commen to have false -, but it is not usual to have a false +, expesually so many. Did he do an exam? If he did is your womb bulky? I was trying and took my firt response 4 days before my period I went in for my prenatal appointment on the day I was due for my period, He was not able to confirm the pregnancy either because it was too early. He did say that he beleived I was due to the positive tests at home (2) and that my womb is bulky. I still have yet to receive the work YES YOU ARE PREGNANT, but I still do not have my period and I am sick, moody ext.

Be patient honey it will happen you will hear those blessed words because YOU ARE PREGNANT. do not stress over it, expessually now that you are pregnant. Doctors make mistakes too.

I remember with my 1st pregnancy we were trying and I was taking my temp and I had an appt. the Doctor reviewed my temp. chart and said nop no baby, your temp should not have spiked so ... Low and behold I was pregnant. HAHA!

You are pregnant! But an ultrasound will not show any signs of a pregnancy until your hormone levels are 5000 or higher. They are probably between 50-100 right now. I know about this because I went through the same thing! (And pregnancy tests don't show even a faint positive sign, unless you really are pregnant.)

Sorry, but you're going to have to wait it out! It's such an exciting and frustrating time...I don't think I slept for a week!

One of the problems with early detection tests is that they show pregnancy hormones at an extremely low level- some show positives from levels of only 5-10. Then you spend weeks waiting and waiting for your levels to keep doubling, in order to get to that super important place- seeing THE HEARTBEAT on ultrasound.

Once you're there, you can really start to celebrate! Chances of miscarriage drop drastically after a viable heartbeat can be seen.

Good luck! Enjoy this exciting time. :)

Hi!!

Go with your gut and your home pregnancy tests on this--blood tests can give false negatives if done too early. I experienced this myself. I felt very strongly that I was pregnant and happened to have an appointment scheduled. They did the blood test and told me that I wasn't pregnant. Having suffered 2 miscarriages right before this, I was too bummed out to even check with a home test. However, the next week while packing to go away on vacation with our family, I started to throw feminine products in the bag and thought, I still think I'm pregnant and I don't want to lug all this with me if I am. So I did a home test and it came up positive. I called my ob/gyn and had them double check the blood test (which was negative), so I went in for an appointment that day (stick in hand). They were shocked--apparently this doesn't happen too often (I had even asked upon originally hearing the results if it was possible that they were wrong--that's how sure I was--and they told me the blood test is always right). Well, they did another blood test, and this one was positive. My advice is to be a little patient, get past the date your period is due by a week or so, and then go back (and, hey, if you want to pee on a stick each day just to check, I get that!) And definitely take care of your body as though you are pregnant until you know for sure!
