Pregnancy tests have different sensitivities. You can get a false negative if there's not enough HCG for the test to detect. You cannot get a false positive because the only thing that will set off a pregnancy test is HCG and that only comes from pregnancy. The only other thing is the rare HCG found in hormone medications. If a test says you're pregnant, then you are, even if another says you're not. The other test may not have detected HCG yet. Wait a day or two and test again. Make an appointment for a doctor's appointment and they can verify with a blood test as that's more sensitive than a urine test.

I thought I'd add some links to sites that compare sensitivity of pregnancy tests:

Faint lines absolutley mean positive. Also if you drink too much before you test you can get a false negative. I am pretty sure that you are pregnant...congratulations :)

I just wanted to say that i did have a false positive. It was actually the test that reads pregnant or not pregnant. I know there are people that believe there cannot be false postives. Mine (i believe) had to do with hematuria from my kidney disease. Obviously not your case...but just wanted to put out there that there are other reasons for inaccurate results.

I had a very faint positive and then got a really bad period twice. The doctor said it was possibly a "chemical pregnancy" - where the egg is fertilized but never implanted. Because it's so early maybe the egg is fertilized but hasn't implanted yet? I would wait a week and take it again if you haven't gotten your period yet.

Give it time. If you are pregnant, it's very early and your HCG may not be high enough to be detected on certain tests. Don't drink alot of water before you test (weakened results). Try to use the first morning urine to test again.
FYI. I have 3 kids and have had 4 pregnancies... they've ALL been different.
Good luck!

Took the test a day before I was due and got faint lines on dollar store tests. After 6 of them went and got the one that said pregnant and sure enough it came up pregnant. Good luck.

My guess is that you're pregnant! Your positive tests were probably more sensitive to the hormone than the tests that came back negative.

Congrats! I'm in the same boat as you. I have two little ones and *just* found out that I'm pregnant with our 3rd. :)
