Pregnancy Symptoms - Portland,OR

Hello All,

This is my first post so bear with me. I have been sick off and on with nausea and vomiting for over a month. I am a month late for TOM and just yesterday started to get my TOM, but for missing almost entirely a full month it's really light, which my last one was too.

The story: so about a month ago I started to not feel good. My breasts were very tender, which made me switch to non-underwire bras and even to go back to some nursing bras for the support. That symptom has continued throughout. I have been getting sick, but Thai food, ice cream and grapefruit juice are about the only things that my body doesn't reject outright. Creamy normally equals good, though some normal foods don't even sound good any more. Everything else is kinda a wait and see approach, with me mainly getting sick. Lately I've also started to be fatigued so extreme that hits in the evening that it's hard for me to keep my eyes open. I've also for over a month been able to go straight to sleep, which is VERY unusual for me. I've tested negative repeatedly for pregnancy and last week had a blood test that ended up being negative. I had some other bloodwork done, but it all came back normal or negative. I've had no chills, no fever, no sore throat, etc. And my thyroid came back normal.

So my questions are has anyone had pregnancy symptoms, but not been pregnant? Is there something else it could be? The doctors so far seem to be baffled and I am scheduled for an ultrasound. I was just wondering if anyone had these kind of symptoms. Alot of the symptoms besides the TOM I had with my first pregnancy.

This is probably not something you want to hear, but maybe the doc should check for mono... Crummy, I know! But, it could explain a lot of the symptoms, especially the fatigue and in the grand scheme of things mono is a pretty minor medical issue.

If you are still feeling crummy - I would check with the doctor. One friend of mine had most of these types of symptoms - she had celeriac (wheat allergies) - it took a long time to figure out. Another friend of mine was sick for months - and they didn't figure out what was wrong but eventually it will clear up.

Have you ever heard the saying "mind over matter"? Well, if your mind believes that you are pregnant strong enough, it is not uncommon for your body to start having symptoms of pregnancy... all of the ones you have mentioned and more.
Do you really want to be pregnant, do you assume that you are pregnant and the doctors are just missing something?

Other than that, I have no other ideas about what might be going on except hormonal issues. Have the doctor check your hormone levels.

My sister-n-law had all the same symptoms as you including the negative blood test but ended up being prego! It was just too early and for whatever reason, her body just didn't show as pregnant early. Good luck :)

You didn't say what you've been using for birth control, or if you are using birth control.

If the blood test came up negative, how close was it to your TOM? Some women don't produce hcg in detectable amounts right away.

I hope the ultrasound will help confirm things. I'm not sure if fibroids or cysts can cause those symptoms, but it seems like that could be a possibility.

It could be something like mono, if your thyroid levels checked out okay, and other hormone levels are all in check, it does seem very odd.

How old is your daughter? If she's young and you nurse, this could also be your body adjusting to your hormones shifting from breastfeeding. If you've recently weaned her, that could also be a factor. A close friend of mine had a wonderful first year with her son, but when he weaned himself at a year old, she ended up developing a pretty bad case of PPD... and had some symptoms like yours, but not the constant nausea you describe.

I hope you are able to figure out what is going on. I hope it's an easy remedy!

a note about the thyroid levels: my levels were within the normal range but on the very low side. i finally ended up at a naturopath who took all my symptoms into account plus my bloodwork and i ended up on thyroid medication. i am much less fatigued now. it used to be that i would be tired about a half an hour after getting up and i don't notice it anymore except during PMS. (i think i need to increase my levels a little.) good luck. being tired sucks!

Have you had your thyroid levels checked? That's where I would start. Thyroid issues will definitely mess with your cycle and cause fatigue issues.
