Pregnancy? Miscarriage?

This past Wednesday (Nov.2nd) I took an OTC pregnancy test. I'd had been feeling "odd" the past few days and spotting, which I don't normally do, plus my period was over 2 weeks away. Well, the test was positive. Thursday I took another test, different brand, positive. Needless to say, this is a surprise. We were not trying.

Anyway, I figure I'm pregnant. The problem is, that Wednesday I stopped taking my pill, just in case and this Friday I started bleeding as if I'm having my regular period. Is it possible that I could loose the baby? I'm not that far along, 2 weeks at the most.

If it is possible...I'm not sure how to feel about it. I don't think I'm in trouble if I do miscarried, but we're just finally getting used to the idea that we're going to be 4 instead of 3.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you. I just needed to know if it was necessary to go through the fuss with my doctor.

Called the doctor, told me to wait and see. He told me to take another test a day or two after my period ended, if it was negative or if my period got worse or lasted longer then "normal" then to just come right in.

Took another test today, POSITIVE!

I'd get to the doctor if I were you. Don't tell the receptionist you are newly pregnant. She'll drag her feet getting you an appointment. Instead, tell her you are having bleeding problems, and don't elaborate. Ask for the first appointment she can give you.

Good luck,
Dawn

It's possible you had a blighted ovum. Many pregnancies end in miscarriages without women realizing they were pregnant.

I would contact my doctor in the morning for a blood test....and tell them what you told us.

It can really be 50/50 in the first trimester if you start bleeding. Half the time the pregnancy is still ok and half the time it's a miscarriage. Call your Dr tmrw and they'll do some bloodwork. Ultrasound won't be of much help yet. If you've missed your period by 1 week u/s can see a gestational sac in the uterus but a fetal pole with a heartbeat won't be seen until a period is missed by 2 weeks. All you can do now is call your Dr in the morning. Sorry for what you're going through. I hope it's all ok. Fingers crossed for you.

1 in 4 pregnancies results in a miscarriage. In fact, I had a 24 day cycle recently, and I am a 28-29 day kind of gal. I think it may have miscarried. I had no bad cramping, though, so who knows?!

Miscarriage rates are high with implantation bleeding too, I think 50%.

Sounds like it could have just been a late period. Could be a chemical pregancy where it just doesn't stick. No way to know unless you call your doctor...

The bleeding may be just caused by the withdrawl of hormones from the pill or it could be beginning of an early miscarriage. You really should go to the Dr and have them monitor you with blood tests (quantitative HCG). There's a slightly higher risk of ectopic pregnancy if a conception occurs while taking an oral contraceptive pill (especially the progesterone only pill --10% chance of being ectopic). Better be safe than sorry. I understand how you feel. My husband and I had a "surprise" 3rd pregnancy that we discovered days after my son turned 1. It was a result of a contraceptive failure and I cried. The day after finding out I began to have some bleeding and then I cried for fear of miscarriage. This pregnancy resulted in a healthy baby boy who is now 21 months and is so cute and loving that we don't know how we could have ever lived without him. Things happen for a reason and plans are always subject to change. Wishing you the best....Nurse Midwife Mom
