Pregnancy Insurance

I just found out I'm pregnant. I was on the pill and everything. Our insurance does not cover pregnancy. I've heard that medicaid will pay for pregnancy no matter what your income if you're not covered by insurance. Does anyone know if that's true? I have two other children by c-section, so it's VERY likely I'll need another one, and those are expensive. I would appreciate any tips on how to fund my maternity medical care!
Thanks.

My suggestion comes too late for you, but it may help someone else. I signed up for AFLAC (the duck commercials) when I was 5 months pregnant with triplets. They pay cash to you for every day you are in the hospital. After the babies were born, I was paid in cash for not only all of my hospital days, but for each day that each baby spent in the hospital. After paying the balance left by our insurance, we still came home with enough money in our pockets to buy a bigger car. I know that they have changed their regulations. You now have to be signed up for the insurance BEFORE you get pregnant--in fact, they won't pay on a baby born before the policy has been in place for 10 months. Than means that you have to sign up at least a month before getting pregnant and they won't pay on a baby that is born early if it makes you miss the 10 month mark. That being said, the insurance is cheap. If you are planning to get pregnant you should seriously consider signing up!

The first time I got pregnant, we weren't insured. I applied for Medicaid, but they orginally came back and said we didn't qualify. However, I was persistant, and they ended up covering me. My thought is it never hurts to try. It's a pain going to the office to apply, but worth it in the end. Do NOT mail in the application....they never seem to get it. Don't leave it in the box at the office either. Wait your turn and get the copy of the app with a stamp on it that proves when you dropped it off. Also, they never answer the phone, so there's no point in calling. Save your time by just going to the office to apply, then they call you for a phone interview, then let you know if they'll cover you. It also helps speed things up if you take in proof that you're pregnant when you apply (from a dr., or planned pregnancy can do this a lot cheaper than a dr visit).

You can also set up payment plans with your dr. if you're paying cash. But, with a c/s, it is a lot more expensive. I know how hard it is to be so excited about a pregnancy, but so worried about the finances...it's scary! Good luck and congrats on the new baby!

Medicaid will cover you. I would fill the application out online so you dont risk getting sick or anything by going into a normally over-packed office. We were in the same situation. Our insurance said that they wouldnt pay for anything, but in the end they have ended up paying out about 900.00...because of the way my doctor billed it. And, an "emergency" csection is considered a pregnancy emergency, and is covered on insurance.
