Pregnancy Hair Loss

Hi Moms,

I am 24 weeks pregnant and I keep reading that my hair should be getting thicker and not falling out but I am having the opposite happen to me. I am losing hair and what seems to me an extreme rate. I talked to my doctor and we tried some different baby vitamins and nothing seems to help. I am worried that something hormonal is wrong and it will effect the baby. The doctor isn't worried but I am. I also don't want to lose all my hair. I can tell that it is thinning and I dread brushing my hair because I will have a huge fur ball fall out. I know that worrying isn't helping but I don't know what to do. I have also been diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Disease in the past and even getting pregnant was a surprise.
Any advice?

What can I do next?

Hi,
I am a mother of two, a five yr. old girl and a 3yr. old boy. I lost a ton of hair with both of them! My doctor said it was normal. I know a few others that it happened to also. I think pregnancy causes different things for different people!! It does grow back some, but the baby hairs coming in tend to stick up. Good Luck!

I would request a blood test to make sure your thyroid is OK. Sometimes huge hormonal changes (like pregnancy, and especially after delivery) can cause our thyroid to get out of whack pretty easily.

If that checks out OK, I wouldn't worry too much, just another pregnancy perk. My mom lost some of her hair when she was pregnant with my brother... other than that she had a very healthy pregnancy and baby!

Each time I was pregnant, my hair fell out like I was having chemo. It stopped right after I quit nursing and came back just fine.

Congrats on the baby! You have to remember that pregnancy is different for everyone and every baby. I have had three babies and each one has been very different. The hair loss probably is nothing more then the changes in your body chemistry, ie. hormones. Yes, most women have the opposite happen and then loose a ton of hair after the baby is born but that doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you. Your dr can do a simple blood test to check your hormone levels if it really bothers you. Unfortunately, you will probably just have to deal with it until that little one is born.

I lost a small amount of hair after my third baby was born. I didn't realize it until it started growing back, and I had spiky wings when I tried to put my hair up! He is almost 3 and I still have some hair growing back. I asked my hair stylist about it one time, and apparently it is more common that what I realized. She told me that she once saw someone who had lost almost all of the hair on the top of her head. I'm not saying this to make you nervous, but hopefully to make you not worry about something being wrong. Best of luck with your baby!

Hi A., I experienced extreme hair loss throughout my entire pregnancy...it came out in handfulls daily. I was amazed I had any left on my head with as much as I was losing. My Dr. was never concerned either and it began coming back in almost immediately after I gave birth. So much so I had to have bangs cut because of all the little spiky baby hairs that were sticking out above my forehead. My hair dresser even commented that I had a ton of baby hairs coming in all over my head and that she'd never seen anyone that had lost as much hair as I had during pregnancy. So, for me anyway, there were no ill effects of the hair loss, other than unwanted bangs and people thinking I'd cut really really short bangs when it started coming back in. Good luck!

I wanted to let you know that I lost a ton of hair with my oldest! I thought something was seriously wrong! But my dr. wasn't concerned either. On the up-side...it does grow back! AND I didn't lose any hair while I was breastfeeding, like most women do! It was almost a reverse situation of most. Don't worrying too much & just know it will grow back...the end result is completely worth it! :)

I don't have advice to help you not lose the hair...but I can sympathize. I was 29 when I got pregnant with my miracle after 4 years of no ovarian function. I spent the whole pregnancy losing hair at an alarming rate. Once I had her, I stopped losing hair, but I never really got it all back either. I can tell you that she was born with no health problems. It was just my body's way of dealing with the increased hormones.

Congrats on your pregnancy! I remember losing my hair a lot during my 2nd trimester with my first child. I use to look at our dark green kitchen rug as a guideline on when to vacuum when there was too much dog hair. But during that time, it was MY hair that I saw, not the dog's! Thankfully, it did pass. Just another crazy thing your body goes through as your child grows within. Best of luck to you!

Oh I hear you, Sister! No worries, a lot of us out there experienced this. Unfortunately for me it didn't stop until well after breasfeeding was done, but I know it is stressful! Hang in there!

Hi, My name is G.. I have had 6 children and i understand what you are saying, the same thing has happened to me. You definitely need to take in more protien. Protein will help build your immune & endocrine system. Make sure that you are taking a good prenatal vitamin along with folic acid. I also stopped wearing my hair in a pony tail to avoid any tugging on the scalp. I am sure that your are using voluminizing shampoo, like Big & Sexy, you can now get this at Target. My doctor gave me prenatals but, I opted to get Shaklee's VitaLee vitamin. I also had a friend that gave me some Syntrax Nectar protein powder that was delicious. I started drinking 3 shakes a day, and in no time it helped tremendously. You can order the protein powder from her and it comes in a wide variety of flavors: strawberry kiwi, peach, fuzzy navel. It is so good. If you want her name email me back.I hope this helps.

Hi A.,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I had some hair loss with each of my children's pregnancies but the first really scared me. My brother started going bald at 20 and I was a few years older than him and I was so afraid that I was going bald too! I found that getting a different haircut made me look and feel better and my hair grew back in--Thank God! It is not as thick as it used to be but I don't think anyone notices but me!

Best wishes for a healthy, happy baby girl!
A.

Don't worry so much about hairloss it is hormones and after all the prenatal testing you have received so far it would have signaled an abnormality if something was wrong with you especially your Thyroid which i'm sure that was checked.Hormones play a trick on all of us take your vitamns and you may need to take an extra Iron vitamin but ask your OB before you start i'm slighlty anemic so I had to start taking one late in my pregnancy. Also be sure you are getting your vitamins from other sources such as fruits and veggies raw fresh steamed etc that will help as well drink up on fluids too. After pregnancy my hair loss is out of control and will last for months but a good haircut seems to do a good enough job for me as it grows back, you can get one now and enjoy your new look you have a while yet to go in this pregnancy and enjoy it mine is almost over
