Pregnancy and 'The Sniffles'

Okay...I just want to know who else needs a kleenex box in every room of the house this year? The allergens are in the air and I have seasonal allergies anyway but pregnancy makes them ridiculous!!!!! I cannot go 10 minutes without blowing my nose! I just read lastnight that pregnancy makes your body produce a ton more mucus. (yuck?) Anybody else suffering like I am?

What can I do next?

Yeah i'm going through it right now.. tho to be honest, i dont know if its the allergens or if its a stubborn cold from when my son was sick last week....

However, just wanted to throw this out there - I had pregnancy rhinitis during my 2nd trimester which was killer! I was suffocating from how stuffed up my nose was. Its the worse i've ever had it. So deep that I couldnt blow anything out. I did everything short of meds... Humidifier, vaporizer, nasal strips... Nasal irrigation gave me temporary relief (I used NeilMed) but it was VERY temporary! All the mucuous just flowed right back in.

Pregnancy is glamorous, isnt it? ;)

Hi K.,

Your prenatal vitamins should be fighting a lot of these allergens off. I know we have a higher pollen count but if you are getting the nutrition you need and your immune system is working at it's optimum, you should not be having any problems with allergies. I got rid of my allergies a few years ago by taking an absorbable multivitamin/mineralcomplex and I've only sneezed a few times this season. Nothing major even with the count so high. My vitamin comes in prenatal form if you'd like to try it. If you'd like some information on it, get back to me and I'll be glad to get it to you!

This year's allergen content is higher than usual. Combine that with pregnancy and it's misery. I am 32 weeks and have been dealing with it for the last 3. Claritin has worked the best so far. However, if you are still in your 1st trimester you may want to talk to your Dr before taking anything.

I was congested during my whole pregnancy, just one of the many discomforts of pregnancy!

Agree with Holly. Pollen levels were are record levels this year. If you go to Weather.com and put in your zip code, they'll show you the pollen count (usually, "High", "Moderate", etc).

I'd recommend seeking the advice of both your doctor and a pharmacist to see what they recommend. Diphenhydramine (active ingredient in Benadryl) is certainly safe throughout pregnancy and is the sleep component of products such as Tylenol PM and Unisom......in case you're having trouble there, too.

At your next prenatal appointment, I'd recommend asking just to make sure it's allergies, though, before self-medicating in the event it's a cold, bacterial infection, etc. just getting started.
