My dauther was told at her 18 wk ultrasound that she has a deposit of calcium on the fetus heart. She was told by her doctor that this could be a symptom of a downs syndrom baby. She was also also told that it is more common on asian babies. My son in law is Japenese American. I am wondering how correct is this statement?

What can I do next?

I don't know how common it is, but my cousin had this happen to her 4 different times, and none of the children were down syndrome babies. Her husband is also Asian, although I am not sure exactly where his family is from. I am not doctor and this could just be a coincidence, but it is my experience with it. I am sending good wishes. Congratulations on what will be a beautiful grandbaby in any situation!

To get answers to these questions, your daughter can be asked to be referred to a genetic counselor. They are really helpful and most of my initial concerns were answered over the phone. I wasn't even referred, I just called our local major university hospital & they got me in contact with a counselor , that called me that day. I then had an actual appt. with her 2 days later , she spent over an hour with me , explaining risk factors & tests. My insurance covered the appointment & it only cost me 15 $ out of pocket. It was so worth it! I felt so much better, after that appt. because I had knowledge & a plan.

Have they offered her a level 2 ultrasound or amniocentesis? Amnio carries some risks, but it would determine 100% if the baby has Downs.

M.,

I would tell your daughter not to panic. Just because there is a possibility of this or they see signs, doesn't mean that her baby has down syndrome. I would encourage your daughter to speak to a genetic specialist who can tell her the specific percentages and details for her individual case.
My thoughts and prayers are with your daughter and your whole family around this.....I hope she isn't thinking of terminating---If she is, please tell her that alot of the tests they do can come out with false positives and her baby could be born completely normal. She should speak with specialists and a pregnancy counselor. Good luck!

She's going to need an amnio to get these questions answered, not much we can tell you here...
