Power Wheels Lil' Quad for Toddlers

I am thinking of buying a Power Wheels Lil' Quad for my 20 month old son. I think he would like it- but I've never had any battery powered kiddie vehicles in my life and I've never even seen one in action. Is it really worth $80? I read that they can only go on cement- does that mean it would get stuck in the grass? What about inclines? And how long would a 6 volt battery last? 10 minutes? How long does it take to recharge the battery? Is there a better one out there for around $80? Thanks

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Sounds like the battery does last a good amount of time. That was my biggest concern. But if that's not an issue, I'm going to go ahead and get one. Even though he wont be able to ride it much longer outside, we have one of those big cement basements so I figure he will be able to ride it all winter down there. I looked on craigslist and actually a couple of people have it for $30! Thank you again.

We have one and our two boys love it. They have both used it since they were about 14 months old. It does go on the grass just not as fast. The battery will last for a few uses and it is easy to recharge. I haven't really tried it on an incline so I'm not sure about that but our backyard is pretty uneven and it goes through it without a problem. If you son is already 20 months old, he may not get as much use out of it next year. My 3 year old still used it this summer but not nearly as much. I think next year we will break down and buy a big power wheels.

Hi K.,

We have one and we love it but what you have read is true - it does not work on grass, and inclines can be tough. As far as the battery, it lasts a long...long time. I don't remember what one we have (sorry) but it's a green 4-wheeler & it retails for $69.99. He does love to ride it, and for almost a year before riding it he loved to PUSH it - everywhere. If you have a 20 month old he will probably love to push it & ride it when he is older. One HUGE piece of advice - DON'T let older kids ride it...they ruined our steering because they were too big and it loosened the frame & made the front sag. It still works, but I am bummed.

I think this is what we have. We gave it to our son for his 1 year birthday (a little young but he liked it at first). Then it sat for a long time. He is just now riding it again.

It works well on cement but not very well on the grass. It will go in the grass - just slow and if it is wet it will get stuck. The battery lasts a decent amount and is easy to charge up.

I am glad we have it. If you could find one on ebay or craig's list that would be great!

Hi K.,
We have two of them for our boy/girl twins. They love theirs! We got them when they turned 2 and I had wished we had gotten them sooner, becuase they use them alot. We actually have all hardwood floors on our mainlevel, and since their b-days were in March, we let them ride around inside. (they work great on hardwood, but can scratch the floors if they idol in place. we have quite a few scratches on our wood floor now, but figured that came with the territory of having twins). They also work great outside. They are really slow, so you dont really need to worry about them getting out of hand. They work in the grass, but depending on how thick and long your lawn is, it can really make the machine work hard. I'd estimate that the battery life is about 6 hours?? The down fall is when you need to charge the battery, they tell you to charge it for like 18 hours (so we usually do it over night). Anyhow, we feel like we've gotten our money's worth out of them. One twin (my son) definitely uses his more than his sister. Hope that helps in your decision making.

I didn't think it was worth it for my daughter at that age, she rarely drove it and had a hard time manuerving and getting it to go.

Fast forward to when she was 4yrs.old bought her a bigger one and she absolutely loved it, had the maturity and ability to steer, and actually get it and enjoy it.

My kids both have Power Wheel vehicles that they've had since they were 2. I think the steering wheel would be easier for him than turning the handles of the quad plus I think it would be safer since they sit into it and there's lapbelts. My kids' jeeps would probably have been over $150 new since they're two seaters but I got them for $75 on Craigslist. They have two speed settings so they can't go too fast (and reverse) Fully charged the battery probaby lasts at least an hour. Considering they've been riding the jeeps a lot over the past 2 years they were well worth the money. Hope that helps.

We have a barbie jeep. We had it for 4-5 years ago. It still works. Yes it can go on grass and cement but the battery wears down faster on grass. Our battery would last 1 1/2 weeks depending how much she used it. We got better life as she stayed on the sidewalk. All the parts are still working in fact I think my kids are going to out grow it before it stops working. Hope this helps.

we have one for our granddaughter and she goes all over in the grass with it. If she goes on cement then she has to wear her bicycle helmet. One thing about the battery.. before recharging it make sure you tape down the button and let it fully discharge. We have had this one for over a year and half and only had to recharge it a few times. Also watch it around trees, my granddaughter flipped hers upside down when she ran the front wheel up a tree. She wasn't hurt at all and it was funny, but she could have been hurt so we watch that now.

I would highly recommend trying to find this on Craigslist.
These toys last so long that kids tend to outgrow them much faster. You should be able to find one for about half the price of a new one. We have 2 types of vehicles which both take a 6v. We have a Power Wheels Yellow VW Car and a red police motorcycle (similar to the little quad). They both run on all types of flat surfaces (hard wood floors, cement, grass, the driveway). 6V is not very powerful so it doesn't go very fast (which is good when the kids are young and still learning how to steer). The charge lasts for quite a long long time. Of course, our son and his friends don't use the vehicles for 8 hours/day. They just play on them just like they do with the other toys and then hop off and then get back on after a while. So, if you are having a playdate with friends, I'd just charge it up the night before by plugging it in and it'll work for hours and hours. Oh, also, the newer the battery, the longer it will hold a charge. The car is an outside toy and is "garaged" ib the garage when not in use. The motorcyle is an inside toy and runs on our hardwood floors and rugs. Why don't you go to Toys R Us and check them out for yourself. They have a huge selection. But, I highly recommend buying used. It saves you so much more money. Good luck!

We got one of theese for our son for his 1st bday. He learned how to ride it right away but not steer. Now he is two and can do it all. He LOVES it! I dont buy a lot of toys new because they out grow them so fast, but this is the best 80 bucks ive spent on something. He will probably be to big for it next year but he is big for his age. It goes good in the grass (a little slower but good) and he rides it all around the yard. It doesnt do good on hills but the battery stays charged for a very long time. We got ours at toys r us. It is a kawasaki one and has been well worth the money.
