Potty Training, Will Pee/poo in Potty When Naked but Not with Training Pants On?

My 22 months old daughter is in potty training sessions. I started her without any underwear/pants. During the first three weeks, she is able to rush herself to the potty room on time to make pee and poo. I don’t have to remind her. She does this independently. I figure it was time to add the pull ups, she seems to be comfortable with peeing and pooing in her pull ups. Then I switch to panties. Sometimes she makes it to the potty room and other times she doesn’t. I am constantly reminding about using the potty room and that her panties are not diapers. I do assist her with removing her panties. Sometimes after reminding her to use the potty room, I find her squatting to pee or poo in her panties. I went back to using the original method (no panties) and she is back to independently going to the potty room without accident. When I take tried to train her with panties, she starts to pee and poo in them. Again, sometimes she makes it to the potty room and other times she seems to just want to pee and poo in her panties. Any other tips? Is this normal? I only train her in the house, she wears diaper when she is out and about. Do I need to have her in training sessions everywhere regardless where’s she at? The accidents in her panties has been going on for two weeks.

So What Happened?

Thank you for the various views and inputs. I decided to be more consistent by keeping her off the diapers at all time except for nap and bedtime. In addition, I will add the rewards charts as someone suggested and go with the flow on my daughter’s progress.

Hi V.:
Your daughter isn't even two years old, your expectations of her are set to high. You have her confused,as first you had her wearing nothing, then put a pull-up, on.Too her, this feels just like wearing A diaper again. You put pressure on her to use the pot,by wearing nothing, then basically sent her into A lapse. You Made her feel free to urinate or have A bowel movement in the pull up.I don't believe in having your child run around with nothing on,as this not only can become habit, but unhealthy. It's quite normal for children to explore their bodies but they also have a tendency to stick things into openings, and crevices, like ears, nose, and yes even their genitals.Your daughter is going to have accidents, because she is still very young, and because she's confused now,as to what you want her to do.Get her some thicker panties, and have her wear those all day. Only put her on the potty,at those times of the day ,she normally has a movement. If you push her to much she will loose interest, making the process longer. Never discipline,or come across disgusted when your toddler has accidents. This is not beneficial, nor productive,as it creates stress, and feelings of failure for them.I wish you and your lil girl the best. J. M

The 3 day method says they can be trained naked but when you put the underpants on, they feel like a diaper is there. You should try loose sweats or even skirts without panties or pull up. It is the feeling of still being naked. They say to do this for 40 days. It wasn't 40 days for my son - he eventually asked for his underwear and I put it on. He "squirts" on accident every once in a while but I'm so proud of him - so far so good! Good luck to you!

First - she is only 22 months- so she is young, second- you are not being consistant- it is confusing for everyone if in some places she wears a diaper, some a pull up, some naked and you occasionally try underwear- you have to read your child's ques- clearly she is not totally ready- but until you are ready to be consistant nothing will work- I have 2 children who both potty trained when they were ready- expressed interest, were excited to wear underwear- both at about 2 years 9 months..... I feel under 2 is a little young and unrealistic...

Hi V.,
Hang in there! I hate negative responses and if you feel that your daughter is ready then go with your gut. Both my kids started using the potty at exactly 2 years old. My daughter just turned 2 in Sept and on her birthday she said she wanted to use the potty. She was just like your daughter only using the potty if she was naked down there. I was told by her day care to put her in a dress with nothing on down there. I started doing that and it worked! Only recently did she start telling me I want to wear Dora underware. I gave (still do) her the choice between underware or a pull up - she now always picks the underware. (I admit though when we are home I do still let her run around with nothing on) I also think having her "Dora" underware helped! Now I'm having to deal with the fact she refuses to use the "BIG" potty when we are out. I have to always carry a portable potty in my bag. However, I'm more then happy to pull it out in the bathroom and she sits down and goes. I was like you ...so hang in there. It will happen. Definitely, try the long dresses with nothing on down there. It totally worked for me. It may just work for you too. Good luck! Your a wonderful mother and remember she won't be in elementary school still using diapers.

V.,
You need to
1. praise her and make her a visual chart with a tangible reward for everytime or every 3-5 times she makes it to the potty.
2.Potty training happens ALL day. It may be a mess, but she could be getting confused and think that using a diaper is okay.
3. Buy panties that are HER choice, and remind her how pretty they are and NOT to soil them.
4.Using panties with a diaper or pull-up OVER them will help minimize some of the mess, when you are out and about.

You sound like you are working h*** o* this and as a Preschool teacher, I applaud you, as a Mom I understand your frustration, but hang in there!!!
It gets better!!!

Hi V.,

My son is also in training! He is 26 months and he has been doing great with peeing on the potty. If he is naked below, he will go pee on his own to the potty. If he is wearing underwear, he will come and tell us so we can help him. He has the odd accident but we expect that since he is so young. I am having trouble with poops though. He only has a movement once a day. Usually in his diaper right when he wakes up so before we get to him. When he goes in the day, he rarely makes it on the potty- either on the floor (tile & wood- so easy cleanup) or in his underwear. He tells us right away as he does not like the feeling of being dirty which is great. I know eventually he will get it but I am also looking for new ways to encourage him...

Anyway- I am also glad we started early too. He is happy and we have already substantially reduced the number of diapers filling up landfills! Good luck!!

My 2 1/2 yr old is in the same stage right now. Though, in the last couple of days, he has begun to take off his own training pants and this morning even took off his pants first!
I suggest you continue to remind our daughter and just be patient. She'll get it eventually.
Take care!

She should've never been naked. With me, I was never naked. I loved my briefs that I always put on my briefs, though I peed in my briefs in the potty, due to that I couldn't take off my briefs. Then, I tried to open the front of my briefs that I less seriously peed in my briefs. I was of severe and profound mental retardation. The same for her. She must love her panties, that she always puts on her panties, though she pees in her panties in the potty, due to she can't take off her panties. Then, she tries to pull the bottom and back of her panties to one side, that she less seriously pees in her panties.

Why do people have to be so negative? Obviously if your daughter is using the potty, she is ready. And you are her mother, you know her best. My daughter is 2 1/2 and she is doing the same. Not one accident as long as she is naked down there. We tried panties and she has accidents. I think they feel like there is something there and they forget that it's not a diaper. After the first few days of being completely naked at home (and a high electric bill to keep it warm enough for her!) I put her in dresses and skirts. It was a step for her to learn to remember she had to pull her dress up. She peed on her dresses twice and then remembered that she had to lift it up first. I think as long as they are at home, no diaper or panties is fine. Eventually they will ask for panties or be comfortable with them on and remember it's not a diaper. You are doing great and she will get it! Good Luck!

I don't have any tips, but can you tell me how you got your daughter to use the potbecause my daughter only uses hers as a chair. I have to make her pee on it and she hasn't pooped on it yet. I think I've tried just about everything. She is 20 months. Can you give me some advice please. Sorry I can't help you out.
