Potty Training Seat

I think my 17 mo son is ready to start potty training. He's not talking but he tries to get my attention right before he does #2. I'm terrified that he'll fall in the regular toilet so I haven't tried to put him on yet. So I need y'all's momma advice on the best potty seat. There are too many options for such a simple (yes I can hear you laughing) task. What worked for you (easy to clean and your child used it), what didn't?

Thanks! B.

What can I do next?

My son is 2 1/2 years old and has been potty trained for about 4 months now. I tried one of the floor potty's, and at first my son loved it, but soon realized we didn't use that potty. He wanted to use the same potty as we do, and started calling it the "big boy" potty. I found a potty seat that is wonderful. It is called the flip n flush. It fits on standard or oblong toilet seats, and is actually connected like a regular toilet seat!! That is wonderful, because we just lift it, as we would the lid, and we can still use the same potty. The lid actually closes with the seat on, as well! My son loves it, and it is just the right size for him. You can order the flip n flush online at www.flipnflush.com.

I tired my son on the floor potties and soon realizd they dont work well for boys even with a pee-pee guard. So save ur money and buy a seat...looks like an adult seat but it comes with an excellent pee guard and characters that will inspire your little man to wanna sit on it. It also is very easy to clean just by rinsing it off in the sink or tub with hot water. As soon as I bought this for my son he immediately wanted to sit on spongebob! Btw it also helps to put ur little man in underware not diapers or pull ups when u know that he can tell when he has to pee or #2. I was reluctant but after just a few accidents he didnt like the feeling and went. And those pricy feel and learn....DONT WORK, feels no different to the child cause its just like a diaper...just something to cost more money. Also dont forget the step stool..i did and ive been having to lift him up on it. Just remove it when hes going so he isnt tempted to get up before hes done.

First of all, I'm just going to have disagree w/ anyone who says a boy isn't ready until 3. The longer you wait, the harder it will be. BOTH of my kids were trained at 25 months in a week. (Girl and boy)Look up the naked and $75 method. I used underwear though, not keen on the running around naked business.

In my personal experience, I did not wait for the "signs" and I think that is why a lot of parents have some trouble w/ the potty training. Doctor says there is no neurological reason a 2 yr old cannot control his/her bladder. So you have to teach them/ show them and then they know what they are supposed to do.

As for potty seats-- Save your money. Put him on the regular potty backwards. He won't fall in and will feel like a BIG BOY!

If you want him to pee in there, throw some soap confetti in there or something for him to aim at. He'll love it. Maybe too much, might try to get it out, but if the soaps are thin enough, they will dissolve before he goes after them.

Good luck!

My son is now 3 1/2 yrs old and we still use this potty because he's not big enough yet. It's a little potty that you sit onto the big potty. My son really likes it because he feels like a big boy! We tried the little potty that sits on the floor and that didn't work very well.

The first potty seat we tried for my son flushed and played music. It also LEAKED!! I took it back and got a plain potty seat without all the bells and whistles. My son liked it and it worked well. Sorry, but I don't remember the brand.

I also ordered a seat from One Stepn Ahead (www.onestepahead.com) It attaches to your regular toilet. It attaches between the lid and the regular seat. Adults simply lift the kid seat to use the regular seat. It is my favorite because it is easy to clean and you don't have to keep taking it on/off the toilet for an adult to go to the bathroom. The only drawback is that it doesn't fit all toilets (depending on the shape of your tioilet and the depth of the screws that hold the regular toilet seat in place). It fits the older toilet in the kids' bathroom fine but doesn't fit our newly remodeled bathroom. Hope this helps.

every child is different, but usually boys aren't "ready" until almost 3 yrs. old. so, don't get frustrated if he shows interest now, but it goes away, cause my 2 yr. old daughter started sitting on a potty seat for about a week and hasn't done it again for about a month. but, any seat should be okay. the one i have is a step stool as well, and they can sit on it, or the blue part comes off and you can put it on the real toilet. good luck, but try not to rush him.

My 3rd child just went through potty training (we have 4 total). Every child is different so I can only tell you what's worked best for us. These same suggestions may not work for your son.

We bought the insert and the potty chair for each of our kids. Each child made up their own minds what they liked and disliked. Whatever they decide, my best advise is consistancy and don't give up. When my kids started potty training I would take them to the bathroom every 10 minutes, we would cut out all liquid and drinks 2 hours before bed and we would get them up before we went to bed and take them to the potty. Always the same routine....potty before we go somewhere, potty after we get there, etc.

My 2 year old didn't like the fancy potty seats that talked and played music. He liked the insert that sat on the regular toliet seat.

I haven't had the joy of experiencing potty training yet, but I know its coming with my 20 month old son. A friend of mine told me that when I start potty training him to make sure to always have a potty seat in the car because some places you go to will not have public restrooms or your in the car and won't have time to find a place to stop other than the side of the road. She also said that when her daughter had to go #2 and use the potty seat in the car she would place a coffee filter in the bottom so all she would have to do was lift out the coffee filter, place it in a bag and the seat would be clean. Also, she carried a jug mixed with water and bleach to rinse out the seat after #1. Good luck with potty training your son!
