Potty Training Issues - Renton, WA

I have a 3 1/2 year old daughter. She has been potty trained for probably 8-10 months now. But, not completely. I cannot get her to stop wetting the bed. We used to use night pants. And that was just too expensive. I have a 21 month old son who is still in diapers, size 6, and she fit them, so we just used his. Then she had a physical for oral surgery, and i asked her pediatrican what i could do for her. He recommend a plastic sheet, and lots of laundry for the next week or two. That she would get the hang of it. Well, here we are a month or more later,(and behind in laundry) and she is back in diapers. She will be 4 in August. She gets somethig to drink with dinner and maybe one drink of water after that, a couple of hours before bed. She still has a full diaper in the morning. I'm confused because, during the day if she naps, she'll wake up and use the bathroom, but, at night she just sleeps right through it.. I'm desperate for advice....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone! for your comments on potty training. obviously not much has changed in the last week but, its reassuring to know that this is common. I think I just thought that my baby was behind, I was way off. :) So, I'll be taking advice into consideration when it comes to bed time and I'll let you know what happens, but, from what I understand it could be a few years from now before I get back to you:)

I had this problem with my middle son for years he just wouldn't wake up. I am a hippie at heart and used cloth diapers. I have used plastic pants on top of the training undies which are more obsorbant. At least then she will fell the sensation of being wet when she goes. Eventually this will lead to being umcortable and she will wake. All the best, hope this helps some. Bilie

We've been going thru w/ this with my 3 year old son! We have to cut off his drinking at about 6pm. And then I have to set my alarm & get up to have him go potty at about 2 or 3 am. At that time I'll let him have a sip of water. It's been working pretty well sooooo far...and he's now at the point where he doesn't have to get up in the middle of the night to go potty - he'll go all night without peeing the bed. :-)

J. T,

I went through bed wetting with my oldest son for 10 years. He had a week bladder muscles. At night when he would go into Realm sleep he would be so relaxed that he would wet the bed. I just started having him help me wash his bedding and night cloths and he took a bath, before he did anything else. and he grew out of it. (I also worked with doctors with the problem) Make sure you don't make her feel like she is punished in any way. That may make things worst.
Good luck

BY the way my son is now 25 yrs old.

just like adults, kids just sleep heavier at night than during naps. I know the pullups are expensive, but if you can swing it, try to get a couple bags of the "cool sensation" pull ups, i think they're huggies. They cause a "cool" feeling when the child pees, if she feels cold down there, it might help her wake up, a couple weeks and hopefully she'll have the hang of it.

Not all children are the same and even though the majority do get potty trained by age 4 it sounds like she's different. I think the more you make a big deal out of it the more she'll get a feeling like there may be something wrong with her. There's nothing wrong with her. Nighttime sleep is different than day time sleep and it's a longer period of time so I think it's natural that her diaper would be full. It could take her body a long time to 'get it' and until then I'd buy the pull-ups and just leave the topic alone. I have a good friend who's son had to be in pull-ups until he was somewhere around age 8 and they thought something was wrong but his body just needed more time to 'get it'. I know it's frustrating. We have a 5 year old that wets the bed every once in a while at night but we've covered the mattress in plastic and don't make a big deal out of it when it happens because as we tell him 'we all have accidents'. He'll out grow it eventually and so will your daughter.

Have you tried getting her up right before you go to bed and making her go potty? My friend had a similar problem and resolved it by waking her daughter up to go potty a couple times a night until she got used to it and started doing it herself. It's been six months now and no accidents.

some kids just wet the bed my cousin did up until she was in jr high school and even if it woke her up it didn't change her doing it the next night my point is that this may have nothing to do with actual potty training it may just be that she doesn't know it is going to happen huggies has a product called goodnights that is for older kids that still wet the bed she probably wants to wake up but can't I know how expensive it is and if using normal diapers works so that she can get her rest than that might be the way to go or you could just try waking her mid way through the night to use the potty I have heard that works.but that will be waking you up too or if you get up in the middle of the night to use the potty maybe wake her then.

Do you have her in the habit of going to the bathroom before bed? I did that with my daughter, because when we got her potty trained I would let her sleep with a night time diaper, and then she just got lazy with that. So I just went cold turkey, and she only peed in bed like twice. What happened or what I realized right away was this, she needed to go to the bathroom before going to bed, and if she did get up to have something to drink, she would call because she was thirsty and then after that, I would have her use the bathroom. So we got to the point where she did not like to get up to go to the restroom in middle of the night, so she goes before bedtime and she does not drink anything in middle of night anymore.

I have heard of some kids doing this where they just sleep through the wetness, if she is not feeling the bed or sheets to be wet in the middle of the night then she may not feel them in any sort of coolness diaper or maybe not even with a cloth diaper.

I would try to limit her drinking before bed, if you can, give it a 4 hours before bed to be her last drink, and make sure she goes to the bathroom before she goes to bed, that may help get her through the night.

Good luck, I hope that something works...(I have heard of others trying to pin point when they go to the bathroom in middle of night, you can get an alarm clock for her and have it wake her up to go to the bathroom or wake you up to wake her up to go potty) Just another thought.

This is very common, most of my siblings (including myself) were older before the night wetting stopped. I was 4 1/2 but my brothers were older still. Its important to remember she doesnt WANT to wet and isnt doing it intentionally and that it is VERY common to wet the bed at night even years after mastering the toilet. Good luck, Jen

Is the way to the bathroom well lite at night? If not, you might give that a try. Some kids are scared of the dark and so won't get up period. Other than that, my only advice to you is to just wait it out. I know how frustrating that can be (my son was 7 before he was night time trained), but some kids just take longer. Hang in there :)

I haven't read what some of the other responses have been, but I have a 2 1/2 year old who is in the middle of potty training. My mother told me that she had the same problem with my brother that you are having with your daughter. The solution for her was to not give my brother any milk after 4pm...other drinks were okay. Good luck!

Try not to worry. Our 4 year old still wets the bed half the week. He sleep in pullups every night because I got sick of washing so much laundry! Kids don't usually grow out of wetting the bed until about 5 or 6 years old. I guess one thing you could try is waking her up a few hours after she falls asleep and having her go potty. Sounds like you have the liquid intake under control. Just try not to get discouraged!

my son is 4 and i have to wake him up around 11pm to have him go pee still. and he won't poo in the potty (cries and says he doesn't know how) so at least you just have night issues lol. my husband said they used that buzzer thing with him (he was like 5 or something) and that worked for him after a while. or you could tough it out for another 6 months to see if it gets better. i've found that waking him up before i go to bed works for us, and he doesn't wet the bed if i do that (as long as he doesn't have an extra drink after like 6pm). good luck! i know its rough, but like they say, 'this too shall pass.'

There are things that will make your daughter wet the bed at night, try taking away sugar and caffeine, and not letting her drink within an hour of bedtime. If that doesn't work , you might investigate some other food allergies. They can make her do that as well.

I wouldn't rush or push it. I think that when she is ready, she'll start using the potty at night. Have your tried rewarding her for using the potty at night, or in the morning if she wakes up dry?? My son is 2 1/5 and has been potty trained for 6-8 months now, and we are just now working on potty training at nap time. He gets a "potty treat" for waiking up dry after nap. But for a while he was pottying in bed everyday. So I just put his diaper back on during sleep times for a month or so and introduced it again, and now he seems to be ready (for nap time that is). Maybe she just needs a little bit more time before her body is ready. Thats my only advice, I hope that helps.

I haven't read all of the advice but what worked for me was waking my son up before he wet the bed. He stopped wetting the bed somewhere around 4 1/4. I woke him up at 12:00 and if I didn't feel like getting up then I made him wake up before I went to bed. It really sucked for a couple of weeks but then I would test to see if he would wet the bed or not. After a few weeks I put diapers on him until he could safely go through a week of no accidents. He occassionally has accidents but only once in a blue moon.

Good luck

I have a 2 1/2 year old son and in the process of potty training so I am just starting but my mother in-law had the same problem with her daughter and she said she took her to the potty before bed and a couple hours later she would wake her up and have her go to the bathroom again and that seemed to help. I hope this helps.
