Hello!
My son just turned 2 in May and we are currently not seriously potty training but are getting ready to begin... At this point, the only time we set my son on the potty is before and after his bath. He has gone to the bathroom on his potty two or three times so far and really doesn't even seem to know that he did. Wondering how to make him more aware of what his body is doing? I thought about buying him some regular underwear so that he can really feel it when he goes potty just to help make him aware but I'm unsure whether or not this is a good idea, has anyone ever tried this before? I'm worried about the mess it will make and what kind of affect it would have on my son - I don't want it to make him afraid to pee. I am planning on having a potty chart with stickers and then some sort of reward for going (an m&m or something like that). I also was planning on having him sit on the potty when he wakes up for the morning or from a nap and then also after every meal/snack. Does this sound good? What has worked for everyone else? Also, we have a gate in our living room (his room is off of the living room) and that is where we are pretty much all day long - the bathroom is on the other side of the gate. Is it important that he have access to the bathroom? Lastly, he does tell me when he goes poopy but typically he tells me while he is going or afterwards, how can I get him to tell me ahead of time so that I actually have a chance to get him on the potty before he goes? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Here is what worked for me, and you may think I'm nuts, but my cousin recommended it and it worked (at least for pee). Let him run around naked. He will pee on the floor once or twice but afterwards he will run to the potty when he has to pee. Then for poop what worked was pants but no undies or diaper. My son pooped his pants a couple of times and that was it. Remember, boys take longer. Make sure he's ready and shows an interest first. My boy didn't get totally potty trained until he was almost 3 1/2 years old, which turns out is the average age for boys. Good luck!

K. you can plan all you want but please don't get frustrated if it doesn't happen when you think it should. Boys on average take a lot longer to train and do it later from everything I've been reading. If he doesn't want it and you do this will make things a lot worse for you both. If you 2 fight over it.
Good luck.

I know the lure of potty training when you have two in diapers.

But if he's not sure when he's going it's probably best to wait.

The average age for a boy to succesfully potty train is 3yrs 5months old.

My almost 2 1/2 year old has been showing interest for almost a year, but we are just getting ready to start seriously. One if the tidbits that I heard (although I haven't tried, yet) is to put underwear on him, and then put a pull-up over it. He will feel when he is wet, but it will eliminate messes for you. Also, put him on at the same time every day (when he gets up, before and after nap, before and after meals, etc.) so that he gets used to it as a common thing. My little one is just getting used to the "feeling" of having to go, so it might be a little early for you to get true results, but it's worth a shot! Good luck!

K.,
I have 2 girls and 2 boys... all of whom are done with "potty.. thank God" lol
There girls were very easy panties and done.... boys a bit harder but not much.... buy the underwear and let him pick em out (he wont pee on his fav if he can help it) also i NEVER used candy for a reward... i put a bowl of fruit loops on the back of the toilet... he can put 3 or 4 in when he has to pee.... he will loveeeee to "aim"........ its a boy thing... worked for me both times lol
good luck
