I have a 3 yr. old little girl who is stubborn when it comes to using the potty. Sometimes she will go and other times she will sit there and do nothing but as soon as i take her off the potty she will go in her pull-ups. Help please!

What can I do next?

Have you tried running the water in the sink while she sits in the potty seat to see if the sound of running water stimulates her to go?

hi N.,
i know this sounds odd, but take advantage that the weather is still warm enough to do so. Leave her naked from the waist down. Once she makes the connection that it is unpleasant to pee on herself, she will learn where to go. As well encouragement, shopping for big girl panties, and stickers. My sister used this technique, and although it was messy for a day or two, my niece caught on very quickly.

It looks like you already have some great suggestions but I'd like to add one more. Dr Phil also suggests letting your child potty train their baby doll. They are supposed to help their baby go potty whenever they think baby needs to by undressing the baby and putting the baby on the potty, and also by showing the baby what to do by using their own potty while baby is pottying. Dr Phil says this is fail proof and it might be fun for your daughter too!

Hi N.!

Stubborn is my little girl who is almost three. What worked for us was using a positive reinforcement potty chart. We gave my little girl a sticker every time she did use her "potty".

Have you also modeled the process for her? Just be as patient as you can and when she is ready, she will do it. I have been thrilled that for two weeks, my little girl is finally telling me she needs to go BEFORE she has an accident. (such an exciting time!)

Although, I was at the mall when she said she had to go and I said, "Hold on a minute..." Before I could get her to the restroom...it was a bowel movement and it wasn't pretty. I ended up throwing away the panties. Who said potty training was going to be easy. Let me know if the stickers work for you!

GOOD LUCK!

C.

My Granddaughter was trained at age two. OK that being said I will tell you she is pretty stubborn herself. We discovered that the use of 1 M&M after she goes (nothing and wait through the fit if nothing in the toilet. Three after dinner if we had a dry day. Lots of good girl worked pretty good for awhile. But the real move forward thing was getting rid of the pull ups and going to training pants. Big girl pants! - plus now she could feel the wet, that really matters. Harder on you but moves things forward. Plus you have a baby in diapers getting that attention. She wants that! Just shift the attention to her panites and how pretty they are and how fun and maybe even something new to wear if you are dry in your new panties each day. Bribes I know but they are feel good things. Then she won't be feeling bad about not going potty. Little said about the goof ups and lots said about the dry panties! Good luck.

Hi N.,

Best thing I can tell you is to take her shopping for some big girl panties and get rid of the pull ups. Let her know calmly that she is a big girl and there aren't any more pull ups. Not even at night.

Use a waterproof pad under her with some towels & monitor liquids at night. It's a good idea to monitor her liquid intake during the day, too. For example, make sure she drinks her cup all at once and not a sip here & there through out the day. This will help you try to figure she needs to go pee about 20 to 30 minutes after her cup of water/juice.

Definitely reward her with stickers on a chart every day & a larger award at the end of the week. Do what you know will work here.

Taking away the pull ups will work the best once she understands there's no going back! It is very important that she knows she will not be wearing pull ups anymore. So her the empty bag once you run out to help her understand. And plan on staying home for a week or two. This will help her feel successful by not having any accidents away from home.

Make sure she's comfortable with her potty seat or chair. If she doesn't mind the big toilet, even better for you!

Well, good luck, be patient & reinforce your rules. Let me know if you have any questions.

Just keep trying, my son was 3 and a half before we even got somewhere. I had started at 18 months ....you know just sit on the potty couple times a day and nothing....when he turned dunno 2 years and a few month he would pee a few times. We started getting hopeful. Then he lost intrest in going at all; at 3 years old asked pedi' doc' what to do. He said its normal some kids take to potty training and others don't useally it make even take up to 4yrs of age. Morgan is now in Pre K and goes all by himself except for having to check when he goes pooh. All we did was keep taking him and sometimes every hour if we where at home. You know just five minutes here or after a sip cup, sometimes half hour after dinner that kind of thing. She might not be able to know or has not figured out when she needs to go.
Good Luck

Hi N.! You may want to go to the Dr. Phil website (I think he has a book on it too!). He has a foolproof way to potty train. It seem silly, you throw a potty party (and invite all her favorite toys) but it works!

Also, have you tried the cleaners that turn the toilet +water blue? You tell your daughter that if she pee-pees in the potty, she can turn the water green. You would have to get a little potty seat so she can sit on the big potty, but that was pretty effective for my oldest daughter. Good luck!!
