The naked method worked like a charm for us. We kept my daughter in just a shirt-no diapers, pull-ups or pants and after one weekend, she was fully trained. As a matter of fact, it happened really by the end of the first day. There were a few messes to clean up, but nothing major. The main thing was remembering every 60 minutes or so to make her go sit on the potty. If we asked her if she had to go, the answer was always no, but if we took her in there, she usually went. Now she just goes on her own.

Good luck!

It may sound a bit nuts, but...let him run around naked. My son was better able to feel the "sensations" that way. Once I started that, it only took him a couple of days. Good luck!!

I just sent you a message and then saw this. I have a 4 year old son. First I want to say be patient he may not be ready. I started trying at 2 and he wasn't ready till almost 3. I would also wait till after your move, the move is going to be h*** o* him. My son was potty trained for a year and when my husband left for Japan we went through remission. I would purchase a Peter Potty which is a little boy urinal. The book that worked best for me was How to potty train in 1 day. It talks about potty parties thats how you know you have the right book. It really worked once my son was ready. Hope to talk to you about the move.

Dear B.,
Athough it has been a very long time since I did this (my kids are 26, 23!)I do have a suggestion. Discovery Toys has just come out with a new book called "The Potty Train"
You do have to go through a consultant. The price is $9.99.
I can get one for you if you are interested.(I can send you me web page if you want to check it out) Good luck.
A friend of mine had a son that was stationed in Japan. He wasn't married at the time. He is on his honeymoon right now but if you have specific questions I could ask him. I think he is in the Air Force but I am not sure.

My suggestion is to wait till a couple of months after you get to japan. otherwise he will have a relapse and be wearing diapers anyway.Changes like a move, this one being even bigger because it's in another country will almost always cause a relapse in potty training. And I don't see taking a potty trained 2 yr old on a 13 hr plane ride and through customs, you could have problems with him not wanting to use the plane toilet and airport bathrooms then you've got a 2 yr old fussing cause he's gotta go pee but won't cause its a strange toilet and he wants to go home. Besides that Most boys don't train till 3.5 to 4 yrs.
When you do train him make sure he is REALLY ready because pushing him will just make it take longer, and using the potty shouldnt be a battle. if he's ready he wil be telling you when he's wet , showing interest in the toilet, etc. check out this article http://children.webmd.com/tc/toilet-training-topic-overview

Hi B.,
I would encourage you to wait until he is showing interest. However if he is, I would buy him a standard potty. If Dad isnt home much, he will be watching you. Let him follow and do his own thing. It is fine to introduce but not many boys get this down at 2yrs. My daugter loved the Elmo potty video and books relating to the subject when she was ready. Best of luck and good luck with your move;)

Is HE ready? If he's not ready, you could be up for a battle.
If he is ready have A LOT of patience. Also, with your move he could very well backslide.

Our son is 5 and was dry through the night very early. But day time wetting is still sometimes a challenge they get very busy and don't want to stop playing to go potty.`
Use pull-ups, they are very helpful, also have him help pick out his 'Big Boy' underpants, that is always very exciting.

Figure out a reward system:
ex:(Create a sticker chart)
Sitting on the potty (w/ no production) get's a sticker.
Sitting on the potty and peeing so many times (# determined by you) gets a favorite snack.
Sitting on the potty (# of times) and poops gets a______. Whatever is valuable to him or your family.

If he's ready it could go very quickly, you'll have to adjust your rewards accordingly. ALWAYS carry extra clothes, wipes, underpants pull-ups and a plastic bag to put the 'OOPs' into.

Oh, and kids love public bathrooms, makes us cringe, but if they have to 'go' take them in.

Always take him potty before you leave the house on a short trip here and there. Take note of where you can take him potty ( stores, restaurants etc)in public.

Technique:
Usually easier for them to sit to start with. When you're ready have him graduate to standing. They need help with their aim...while sitting it could shoot out between the seat and rim and while standing, well give him a tp square to shoot in the water, some people say Cheerios but they really don't flush very well. Be prepared to do a lot of wiping up!

Have Patience! Good Luck!!
Like the other mom's said if he's ready go ahead, w/ your move he may very well regress. But don't force it, you really do wan this to be a positive experience.

My first two kids were boys and I potty trained them both at 2.5yo. That's awesome that you are potty training him now. What I did was buy a bunch of hot wheel cars and every time they went potty, they got to pick from the Walmart bag of cars. They wore underwear day and night from day one on. Good luck!

Wait!!!!!!!!!!! My son who is also 2 1/2 showed signs of early training(18mnths) but totally regressed. Now it is struggle to get him intrested at all. i say do what he want's. Leave him in a pull up and if he wants to use it he will and if not no big deal, there is still time. My son knows what to do when he's on the potty but he wont tell me he needs to go, and when i try to put him on it every 20 min he refuses. We were at war w/ each other. So now I have just left it alone, and sometimes he will tell me he wants to sit on the potty. its rare, but it happens. good luck, dont stress!

If he is dry when he gets up in the morning or at nap time that is a sign that he is ready. Try sitting him on the potty and see what he does. You can also put cherrios in the potty for him to aim at. I just potty trained my almost 3 year old. He wanted nothing to do with it for a long time. Hope I help you.

My first question is "why?" Is your son showing a desire to potty train? I ask this because boys are slower in this area. I have two boys of my own, plus have talked with many other moms of boys and that is the consensus especially when it comes potty training. My 3 1/2 yr old showed early signs (at age 20 months) of potty training, but while I could get him to stand and tee tee, I could not get him to tell me when he had to go. So I backed off and waited until he was 3. Of course, I would have him go before he dressed or went to bed or got in the tub, but I did not count that as potty training.

In my opinion, people who take their kids to the potty every 30 minutes and the child stays dry all day...this is not a potty trained child but a potty trained adult. A potty trained child is one that can tell you he/she has to go and then goes on the potty.

So if you still want to work on it, go for it, just don't make it stressful for your son. This should be a positive experience. Good luck.

I am a stay at home mom of 3.
