When we're at home, I let my 2 & 1/2 year old son wear no diaper and I tell him "You're wearing no diaper. You're a big boy so I need you to go pee pee in the potty. Remember no diaper."

Then, he'll go the entire day with no diaper and using the potty all on his own. Won't even warn me he's going! He feels good to be independent.

I guess to try not to make it such a big a deal. Just as a matter of fact. And, then when she goes praise her.

Hi J. :) I really do hope my experience will help you navigate this stage in your daughter's life (trust me, if done with a sense of humor and a lot of patience, potty-training won't be as arduous as it sounds, and you'll have so much more confidence as a mom and in your kid's abilities to know what they need and when).

My son turned 3 in Nov and I tried encouraging him to use the potty since he had turned 2! Back then, he was doing well for about 3 months when i freaked out one day when he had an accident on our new cushioned chairs and since then he has reverted back to diapers - totally my fault since I knew as I as yelling, I was making big mistake #1: don't freak out about accidents...

Surprisingly this christmas, he just one day decided he didn't want anything to do with diapers and we just let him go bare-bottomed around the house for about 2 weeks till he got the hang of using the potty. (I knew he'd be fine when my sister came to the kitchen for breakfast and told us that she'd just witnessed my son poop in the potty, get up and dump the poop into the toilet, flush it then rinse out the potty in the sink as he stood on his stepstool!!) - btw, I don't reccommend letting your kids do all that on your own, but let them see the mechanics of cleaning up after he/she uses the potty.

We had a potty for him in every bathroom and made it very easy for him to access them, but now we just have step stools at each toilet so he can reach/stand up/hop on the loo. We'd used to put a pull-up on him at night, but to my shock he'd either hold his pee the whole night till early morning, or wake us around 2 or 3 to ask to go to the bathroom (i felt like it was a miracle).

The best piece of advice i got was from my cousin who told me to make the committment NOT to go back to diapers for myself, not for my son (i know it sounds melodramatic, but if you think about it, it really makes sense)... last year, every time my son had made progress in the potty dept i'd regress him back by 1) throwing on a diaper when i felt taking him to the potty in public didn't seem convenient, 2) i'd scold him for having an accident and assume he still wasn't ready to be diaper-free and again just go back to diapers, therefore reinforcing his dependency on diapers as well as my own!

This time around, i put all the diapers away (except for a few pull-ups i used for night time - btw, i haven't used a night time pull-up on him for over a month now!), made sure i asked him to pee/poop before we left the house, chucked my anger/frustration about accidents out the window, gave lots of positive reinforcement, and had lots of extra underwear/clothes in a bag in the car at all times. changing my attitude towards the 'trials of training' had as much to do with allowing my son to teach himself how to use the toilet.

Well, hope this helps and good luck with it!

J., go buy a poster board and make it into a chart...label the top "PANTY PARTY" and some really cool fun normaly would not buy stickers(2-3 packages) to put onto the chart only when she pees on the potty make it a big deal and make sure to point it out to daddy when he gets home.......lectures every time when she wets herself, and i don't mean yelling just the montra of where doses this go and let her know how sad it makes you and all of the hard work you now have, no lectures if it is your fault, like you went to store...you are at home who cares if she matches...get her "big girl panties" 3-4 packages, she is going to need them anyway...so to get stickers you pee on the potty, get to call dad, family friend grandma whoever will be positive and will talk potty fun....so you explain to her where to go and what is expected of her....you only use pull ups when you leave the house and when she is sleeping....the panty party is basicly you making a cake and order pizza and have those she called and the phone after she was a BIG GIRL to dinner and they think you are having a party....nowto get this party you have to set GOALS....i used 7 dry days in a row to get this, you wet yourself after 4 days then you are back at 0....they start to get the idea use incouraging things along the way 3 days dry you can get like the really cool strawberry shortcake panty package to wear...you picked them up anyway just held back to deserve them like you don't want to pee on strawberry ....pooping gets you a great candy of mom's choice that you know they love but you don't hand out...mine was hershey kisses...any more questions just ask....keep in mind they can stay dry for about 2 hours just say to yourself i can do this and not use the pullups LET HER FEEL THE COLD WET ICK and it will help her learn....

Hi, well i have had and still have alot of potty issues in my house. My 6 year old daughter was pee potty trained by 18 months, we did the sticker chart thing too and candy and small dollar store toys for pooping. It was the pooping part we couldn`t get down with her for the longest time. She was constipated alot and would only go once every week or so, so i think that was a big part of her problem. I also think i pushed too hard with her and set her back, i finally gave up on it for a bit and she shockingly to me, asked to go on the potty one day and poop and that was it. She decided to do it on her own and that was it. Now with my son, I`m embarrassed to say he`s 3!!!!!!and was 3 in September. He wants no part of potty training and is just content with going in his pants. He`ll go too when he wants to, no consistentsy. I`ve tried it all, books, movies, charts, prizes, no more diapers and putting on underwear on him, putting him on the potty every hour, and he simply says MOMMY I DON~T WANT TO AND I DON~T LIKE IT. I`m frustrated too. I can`t even sign him up for preschool because around here they require them to be potty trained. So you have time, they are all different. Just hope you don`t have one like me who`s over 3, lol :) With my daughter though, letting it go for awhile and just barely mentioning it to her and letting her decide that she wanted to do it and that it was her choice, worked finally for her. My son though I think is hopeless. Good luck, I can relate:)

I actually am having the same problem with my 2yr. old daughter. She did great yesterday and today she wants nothing to do with her potty. I had to also put pampers. So I have no idea what to do. So hopefully soon we will both get some good advice.

I think patience will be one of them!! LOL

Well try not to force her cause it will make it harder maybe she's not ready yet. This is what I did, when we were home I would put underwear on my son or nothing at all I would remind him often to use the bathroom when we would go out I would put a diaper on him cause I was afraid but one weekend I just decided to go for it and 2 months before his 3rd b-day he was potty trained he still wears a diaper to bed but I guess thats just another step we have to take. By the way the potty training seats were useless he didn't like it wasted my money he perfered the regular toliet and pullups another waste there just like wearing diapers and they are expensive. Well good luck and be patient and remember give her alot of priase and reward her maybe with stickers and always be postive.

Hey J....I'm going threw the samething, my daughter is 2 and she was wanting to do potty the days she felt like a big girl. So what I'm doing is every morning I put b4 brushing her teeth I put on a panty with a character she likes (my daughter likes strawberry shortcake) and tell her you let mommy know when you and strawberry have to go potty, and I'm all happy about it. I also have a brag chart in the bathroom with stickers....stars for washing hands, small things for pee, and big ones for poopy. This gets her all happy and it's been 2 weeks and her accidents have lessoned. I continue to ask her to go potty every 3-4 min and whenever I go she goes. I hope this can help!

Try a reward program. Our daughter would do that and what I did was found stickers she liked and Id give her little ones for peeing n big ones for pooping and we made a brag sheat to hang on the wall n let her put the stickers on it herself. She was excited everytime she had to use the potty. I hope this helps.

My two year old was the same way. She only wanted to train when she wanted. So I decided to take her to the store and buy her big girl pants (Dora the explorer). Something that she chose. Of course she still had accidents, but was upset because she could no longer wear her underwear. She also did not like being wet. If I had to go to the store or was going to be out for a long time I did still use pull ups. It did not take long for her to completely train after that, maybe a couple of weeks.

Just keeping asking her if she needs the bathroom. I would do a behavior chart where everytime she goes on the potty she can receive 1 sticker for pee and 2 stickers for poop. Once the chart is filled, she then can get a reward. You can also have her pick out underwear. Another suggestion that when you change her, keep saying "Big girls don't go in diapers and you aren't a baby" I used these tricks with my son, and even though we are still on the process of potty training we're getting there slowly. Hope this helps.
