Potty Training 3 Yr Old.

My three yr old boy goes poop in the potty pretty consistently. He will go pee as well if I ask him to, or if he is already on the potty. However, he doesn't seem to care if he pees in his pullups. He just goes and changes them if they are too wet. Any ideas on how to get him to use the potty for pee instead of his pullups?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I have been successful! Yay! I did get rid of the pullups and got him some of the regular training pants and some underwear. After about a week (seemed like forever) he finally got the idea that he didn't like having to clean up the floor and change his clothes all the time ( I made him do it by himself). So now, he's pretty consistent with letting me know when he has to go potty and running to the bathroom to do it by himself.

My answer would be to not put him in pullups....put him in regular underwear. My kids really didn't do well w/ pull ups, they just felt as though they had on diapers still. With a new pair of underwear (maybe something fun that he picks out) he won't want to get them wet/dirty. Good luck!

He'll get it. Don't worry. He is on his way.
Remember... pottying progresses in stages... not all at one time.
He's doing fine.

Or, just leave him naked on the bottom. At home.

Just don't turn it into a 'battle' or it will make things worse, and he may even regress. Just keep praising him... encourage. Not critique.

My son was like that. He's 3.5... and he pretty much pottied on his own... but for him, he will not yet, poop in a toilet. But I am proud of him.

I would say that you give up the pull-ups. You can get him some cool character underwear that he won't want to mess up. I tried pull-ups with my son and his younger sister and they just seemed to think that they were in big kid diapers. Once I took the pull-ups away and gave them underwear the potty training went so much faster. It took my son two days and my daughter a week. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Get rid of the pull ups. Put him in underwear so he feels the wet. I talked up the day we were getting rid of the pull ups and got underwear. My little guy carried the diapers of of his room out to the dumpster and put them in.

Sure you will have to clean up and change clothes but they don't feel the wetness in the diapers and that is all pull ups are.

I know it's hard, but ditch the pull-ups! I potty trained my daughter at 25 months and we went cold turkey, no diapers or pull ups. I really feel it's the best way. That being said, you should always do what works for you and your son. It seems like the wet pull up doesn't bother him. Maybe it will when it runs down his leg???

Get rid of the pullups. If you're not ready for undies, use re-useable training pants. There are lots out there. They help him feel wet and the natural consequences of wetting and save you a little in clean up. But you should just be prepared for clean up and accidents. They are a normal part of the learning process. Pull ups don't give much incentive for a kid to stay dry.

I recommend putting him in underwear, at least when you are at home. He probably doesn't feel "wet" in the pull ups. In underwear he will and that feeling is likely to motivate him to pee in the potty. If he doesn't like the feeling of poop, he isn't going to like feeling wet.

Good luck to you!

Hi
Pull-ups are the most detrimental thing for potty training. Your son probably can't 'feel' when he has to go pee, partly because there isn't really a "consequence" when he does go pee in his pullups. Throw away the pull ups. Undies only. That he picked out. "iron man (or whoever) doesn't want to get wet - only pee in the potty". If he does pee in his pants it will make a mess. HE cleans up. He changes his clothes, puts the clothes in the washer, wipes up the floor etc (no anger from you or anything, just matter of fact "Uh-o, time to clean up". If you can let him be naked for a couple days that works best!

Good Luck!

Get him in cloth underpants. You've got the easy part done for you, he'll poop in the toilet, YAY. Now, cloth underwear (either the thick training pants, only needed those for a little while, and/or cool fun undies - if he likes scooby doo, tell him scooby doesn't like to be wet! and if he wets, then plain ol training pants - I really don't see much of them around anymore??!?)

My friend taught me the "2 weeks and $60" method Basically what it was she had her kids running around in long shirts, naked underneath and of course there were accidents, then the $60(or whatever amount it was) was for the carpet cleaning at the end of that period! I think cloth underpants are fine, because they FEEL wet and icky.
