I have a 27 month old son. He tells me when he is wet and wants to go on the potty but when I put him on he potty he does not do anything. Should I try pull ups or what? I have even tried the surprise thing if you go potty and that does not work. Any advice

What can I do next?

keep sitting him, frequently, try to set it at routine times - after breakfast, before going outside to play, before lunch and nap, after nap, etc.

Pull ups are a diaper and kids realize that very fast, you can do undies with plastic pants over it and that will work better. Or undies with a diaper over it. I had one daycare boy that worked great commando - no undies but pants - I think cause the undies were tight just like the diapers were but no undies made him realize he didn't have a diaper on so he held it.

It will take 10 months of CONSISTENTLY sitting him before he is trained. At first he will just sit, then eventually he will produce, then he will get it. This is a skill just like using a cup or spoon, you didn't expect it to happen over night but gradually as you introduced the skill.

I would strongly urge you to resist Pull-ups at all costs! They make it too comfortable to not potty train. :)

Also, it just seems to me that 27 months is pretty young to expect potty training to be very successful. I think just sitting on the potty is a pretty good accomplishment. The rest will come in good time.

Here is what my mom told me: "Kids have to do three major things before they are 3. They need to learn how to walk, talk, and potty train and they can't learn all three at once. And relax, they rarely go to college in diapers!" At least she helped me relax a bit about it. :)

I would not put him in a pullup - too much like a diaper and expensive. Start by taking him to get underwear and make a big deal about him being a big boy. Tell him that if he tells you when he has to go potty, you will take him. You choose if you want to reward him or not (dancing, candy, sticker, etc).

Start by taking him every 1/2 hour. Have him 'try' by sitting on the toliet and counting to 10. If he doesn't go, set the time for 10-15 more minutes. I suggest using a timer that will go off and explain to him 'When the timer goes off, you get to go potty!" That way it's the 'timer' telling him to go and not you (this worked well for my daughter. She never 'had' to go when I asked but when I set the timer, she would jump up and go!).

If he does well, gradually increase the time. If he keeps being wet and does not go on the toliet, his body may not be ready (ie: he may not be able to tell you BEFORE he has to go).

I'd say he's at a good age to start though!

Hi C.

Sounds like he's ready. I would also advise you to avoid pull-ups, as they are just a diaper. My daughter potty trained at 30 months, I think I could have done it earlier but I had just had a baby and didn't want too much change for her. I got the e-book from www.3daypottytraining.com and it worked like a charm. I would highly recommend getting this before you get started- it is a great method and she lays everything out for you to easily follow. Good Luck!

dont waste your $ on pull ups. when YOU are ready all you need to do is take off diapers ( except for sleeping) and put underwear on ( or some kids do better being naked for a day or two first). If he is telling you he is wet he is ready. Just gotta get the parents ready for a few messy day! take him potty frequently. sometimes a potty chair right where he is playing can be helpful for the first week or so . And start with stickers or M&Ms as a reward. Good luck!

He is having performance anxiety. Give him time, and be supportive. I find praise to be the most effective tool in potty training.

Be patient some children take longer than others, for now it is a little game to him, telling you he is wet is the first step don't worry before you know it he will be running to the bathroom. Pull ups are a great idea he will start feeling independant because he will be able to go on his own and he will feel like a big boy.

If he's interested, go for it! Both my boys were potty trained at an early age.

I agree about not buying pull-ups just yet. He may need more practice. I would start him on the potty right when he wakes up and before bed until he gets the hang of it. My son was telling me when he was 2 and then just stopped telling me. Good luck.

I put my twins on potties in front of tv. Got them use to the potty, then gave them a drink. Let the drink take effect and they peed in pot without thinking about it. Then we made a big deal about, telling them how big they were becoming. After that it was alot easier. Hope this helps.

Our son is 32 months and we just went through the whole Potty Training thing. My best advice: choose your method and stick with it, be patient, and customize based on your kid. We read a very short guide called Potty Training 101. It was full of great advice, but things didn’t really click for our son until we figured out what his buttons were. For example, the guide recommended keeping him in his new “big boy” underwear at ALL times. Our son treated them like a fancy diaper. We went all natural for 2-3 days and then it clicked. The guide also recommended a timer. This created a lot of anxieties on his part so we had to adapt. You will figure it out, but what ever you do, be patient and stick with it. Good luck, it’s a journey… not a fun one, but the end result is very rewarding!!!!
