Potty Broken Granddaughter Is Peeing in Inappropriate Places.

My daughter has asked for help from you Moms. I never experienced this problem with my three children so I do know how to help her either. Here is the scoop: My almost three year old granddaughter has been potty trained (of course some occasional accidents) for several months except for at bedtime. Last week after her bath she took off her towel and ran into the hallway closet (carpeted of course) and peed. Yesterday when my son-in-law was watching her she went upstairs and he thought she was just getting a toy to bring back down. She came back down without her shorts on and different panties on. He didn't notice but when my daughter came home she noticed right away. Here when my granddaughter went upstairs she got onto the guest bed and peed. Now maybe she was bouncing on the bed and had an "accident" but we don't know. At first I thought maybe she was trying to get attention but the night she peed in the closet my daughter had just spent time with her giving her a bath and was getting her lotion out ready to rub her down. I am sure my daughter will appreciate any insight you all can give her on this matter. PS: My granddaughter is very advanced for almost being three. Most people think she a very small 4 - 5 year old. Thank you all for your input.

What can I do next?

She could have a urinary tract infection. Take her to the doctor or try an at home test. Is this the same daughter that is expecting? That could have something to do with it too. Or, perhaps that reward system for going in the potty had slacked off a bit. Whether it was praise, a sticker, an M&M or whatever....that often slows down when we think our kids "get it." They like the attention....They like when we make a big deal about them going in the potty.

When my daughter did this, she did it because she was mad and couldn't communicate her anger. I had left for work and she looked at my mother and peed on the floor. My mom dragged her to the potty and made her sit there for 10 minutes (not how I would have handled it, but it seemed to work). The next time she did it for my husband, again out of anger and he yelled at her. Check her out for a uti, but She seems to be communicating anger or anxiety or attention seeking. I like the rewards system and when she does go in the wrong place, make sure you show her the right place to go right away.

She could also have had something happen that made her feel uncomfortable with going to the bathroom in front of anyone. It could be from something harmless or very serious, either way, I would work on the immediate problem first and ask her if she doesn't like peeing in front of people and then move on to the reason why once she is reassured that she is okay and that going to the bathroom is normal and she only needs someone else there until she doesn't need help any longer.

Just my thought on it, I'm sure that one way or another your daughter will work it out, but I do hope that at least one of the pieces of advice helps. Good luck.

Things like this are a sign of the child trying to tell you something. Perhaps they can't verbalize, or don't even know why they feel as they do.

I would try to see what major events have transpired when she started doing this. (I see number 6 grandchild is 'on the way in Dec'... could that be impacting her? could she be sensing Mom is acting different or talking about a new addition, or decorating/buying things for them??)

Talk to the child. Spend more time with her, reassure her that she's loved and accepted.
