During pregnancy I had no problem with blood pressure until the last week of my pregnancy (well really week 41) I ended up needing a c-section and now my blood pressure is high. My doctor prescribed dyazide and I am really scared that taking it could hurt the baby or dry up my breast milk or something. Anyone have any experience with this?

So What Happened?

I ended up not taking the meds since my blood pressure was only 132/85 and I worked hard at getting more sleep, calming down, took DHA fish oil and ate foods high in potassium and bingo blood pressure self corrected. I'm now a reasonable 120/60

Hi L.,
I can understand your concern about any medication you take while breastfeeding. Generally speaking Dyazide is considered relatively safe and there have been "No pediatric concerns reported" with doses between 25-50mg/24 hours. Higher does can decrease your breastmilk supply. How old is your baby? (High blood pressure associated with pregnancy usually resolves itself soon after birth.) What dosage are you taking? How long will you be taking this medication? I would love to talk to you more about this. Please contact me via my website at:

I would be able to help you with a 30 minute consultation. I am both a Registered Dietitian and a Lactation Consultant.

I look forward to hearing from you, L..

I wouldn't take that drug while breast feeding. I used dried hibiscus flower tea 3-4 times a day and that brought my blood pressure down. I buy mine from mountainroseherbs.com Just steep the flowers, strain and drink hot or cold.

Hi there.

I had preeclampsia while I was pregnant and it went away once I delivered, so I don't have any advice for you there, but I do have a place to look.

The Preeclampsia Foundation is great...www.preeclampsia.org. There's a message board there and I'm sure you'll find other women who have gone through what you're going through. It's definitely a scary disease.

Good luck and take care of yourself!

Talk to your doctor and pharmacist and get their professional opinions about which drug would be best and what the possible side effects are. They may also be able to advise you on "natural" alternatives. But remember ---- just because something is "natural" doesn't mean it doesn't have side effects too, investigate them just like you investigate prescription drugs.
