Postpartum/post Breastfeeding Missed Period. Any Answers Other than Pregnancy?
I am almost 7 mos postpartum and stopped breastfeeding at 5 1/2 mos. I had my fist postpartum period last month and it was extremely heavy and lasted a whole week. My husband and I have been intimate just a few times this month - without condoms using rhythm method while on the tail end of my cycle and with condoms post-period. I know you can get pregnant while on your period, I know it was a bonehead move, but we were on our first vacation without kids when I got my first period and you know how it goes. Now I am a week late. I took a pregnancy test this morning and it was negative. I called my OB and made an appointment for tomorrow morning for a blood test. Needless to say, I am FREAKING OUT. I have a 3-year-old, a 6-mo-old and can't imagine going through it all over again so soon. The nurse at my OB's office said that it was not normal for a postpartum/post breastfeeding period to be so irratic and that a week late is cause for concern.
I have not had much sleep lately and have changed my diet drastically in the last 2 weeks in effort to lose some of the baby weight. Could these be contributors?
So What Happened?™
Wow! Thanks so much to everyone who responded! This is the first time I have asked for advice and I am overwhelmed and pleased by the response from all of the caring Mom's out there!
** UPDATE ** I took another negative home test this morning and visited my OB who said I was NOT pregnant and gave me a 6-mo supply of BC Pills (bless her!) and said to start taking them immediately. I must admit I am still a little leary, but I know that once your hormones start trying to readjust themselves, all bets are off, even if you've been on a 28-day cycle your whole life!
Thanks again to everyone!

I had strep throat after this last pregnancy and that put my cycle very late. Any illness can do that, as can sleep deprivation! Don't know about the diet change though. And while I'm sure you're relieved, just remember that children are more of a blessing than a burden...I just had my 5th blessing 3 months ago! Their ages? Haha!!! 6yrs, 4 yrs, 2 yrs, 14 months and now 3 months! 5 babies since Dec 2001 (3 born within 25 months)!! God is good! Don't know what we'd do without any of them!

I'm pretty shocked that your doctor's nurse would give you that information. Periods are sometimes very unpredictable when they first start back after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Most women count on them being irregular for a while. Of course, there might be a possibility of pregnancy, but I seriously doubt it based on what you've told us here.
