I am having a really rough time lately. I cry all the time. I cry about everything. I feel like I am so sensitive. I get really upset on Mondays when I have to leave the baby again and go to work. My husband and I fight all the time. We have a lot of other stuff going on right now, I'm really stressed, my thyroid is way off and I'm anemic. I just don't know if it's that or postpartum? People keep telling me it's post partum, but, I don't know. I'm going to the Dr tomorrow but just wondered if anyone else went through this and if anything worked? I really didn't want to go on medicine but I can't keep going like this. I'm always upset.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I went to the Dr today and she put me on a low dose of Zoloft. I'm waiting to hear back from her about if I can still breastfeed though. Even though I'm only doing it in the morning and at night and not producing much, I'm just not sure I want to give up yet. I'm worried about having worse depression from that. We'll see what she says! She did agree that I would feel better with my thyroid and iron levels better but it will take a while to regulate those.

Just asked the same question. I am going to the OBGYN soon. Just wanted you to know you are not alone. WOW, that you are doing school too. I couldn't imagaine that as well, I stay at home and think that alone is the hardest thing. My husband thought supportive, doesn't quite get it. I would have your hubby take the baby and get a complete check up. Since you have anemia and thyroid problem. My husband does as well, and it took a while to find the right thing. Good luck. Write any time!

Thyroid problems can cause depression-like symptoms. Definitely, extremely. And it can take months to get your thyroid in line (adjusting meds up & down), but I would make sure that is stabilized before starting any antidepressants. I say this as someone who has struggled with depression and thyroid problems since the age of 13.

Stress can cause so many problems too.
I know you work full time and probably don't get much time with your baby, but I have to suggest that you take an hour or 2 a week to do something for yourself, yoga, shopping, book club, whatever you enjoy. It is refreshing to have a little time without any responsibility.

i am a mom of three and I have been in the same boat as you. I went to my doctor and she put me on antidepressants and the really didn't help. I have been on them for 7 months and I just went to my gyn and he did blood work and found out that I am severly anemic, which can cause the same symptoms as depression. if I were you I would request that the doctor do complete blood work before going on any meds. Anti depressants have side effects which can make you feel just as bad. I hae now been on prescription iron pills for one week and I have noticed a huge difference. now I am having a hard time weaning off the antidepressants and it really sucks. I wish my primary md did blood work in the beginning and might not have even needed the antidepressants. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or need to talk. ###-###-#### or ____@____.com

Hi K.,
I was postpartum too and I didn't want to go on medicine but I got to a point where I couldn't deal with how bad I felt everyday. I was prescribed Zoloft which is considered one of the more gentler anti-depressants (I didn't have any side effects). My mood became stable and I felt a lot better.

I don't know what your financial situation is but is it possible for you to drop down to part time work or take a year off to spend with your baby? It might make things seem less overwhelming.
