Postpardum Exercise

When is a good time to do post-pard. exercise? My son will be 3 wks old soon and I feel like I am ready to do light exercises at the gym such as treadmill walking and light weights. I have already lost 22.5 lbs since his birth. have 18 more to go.

What can I do next?

I would stay away from the weights until your 6 week check up, but some walking shouldn't be too bad. I'm no expert, but you need to be careful of your abdominal muscles, which can be torn. You've lost a ton of weight already, be proud of that. The last 18 might take a while. It took you 9 months to gain that weight, it might take that long to lose it. I have a 12 week old and I've got about 5 more pounds to go.

I believe that you know your body better than any one, and if you feel you are able to handle doing some exercise, GO FOR IT! However I do reccomend taking it easy. Start out by walking everyday and adding things as you feel you can handle them. I walked alot and started doing sit ups at about 3 or 4wks and doing pilates when my abs could handle it, dont worry youll get back to your old self in no time!

First of all congrats!
In my personal opinion if you FEEl okay to work out then go for it... but start out slow. I started walking a mile a day when my son was two weeks... Just by walking everyday for 3 months I was down 60 lbs (gained 80... yikes i know) but it only took me 5 months to lose all my baby weight that i gained because I ate extremely healthy and walked everyday. My son is 6 1/2 months now!
I was very fortunate and didn't need episiotomy or had any tearing... so i was able to get out right away... i didn't wait because i didn't want to wait 6 weeks before i started to do anything. I again think it depends on how you are feeling down there... if you had a c-section then i suggest you wait a little longer.
I wish you the best of luck... congrats on your weight loss too!!! :)

congrats on your bundle of joy. they say wait until your 6 week check up to start moderate to heavy excercising becuase your body is still healing itsels, but it is ok to walk on treadmill and light excercise just don;t over do it. listen to your body and if you feel tired stop and rest. my son is 3 months old and he was born in july. i was out walking everydAY WITH HIM AFTER A WEEK, and i still do it everyday. get outside and enjoy these last few days of nice weather and then when the snow falls there is always the gym. a baby needs fresh air just make sure you bundle them up according to the weather outside.

good luck.

i started walking around franklin park zoo in boston right after my 6 weeks checkup and i walking 3 days a weeks and light weights at home and try to do exercises from FitTv channel in the mornings while the baby is sleep. But everyone told me to, to take it easy, allow your body time to heal, cause i had twins, i lost all my baby weight but i just need to lose more weight, and what foods do you guys recommend to cut out to help with dieting

I agree with Kelly. I'd wait until you see your doc at your 6 week visit. You body (though you may not feel it) just went through something that is very tramatic. You need to give it time to recover. It is in your best interest to allow this. They say that it took you 9 months to get this way. It will take you 9 months to undo it. Don't rush yourself, give yourself time to recover and enjoy the experiece of being a new mom. Your only going to have so much time to enjoy this stage in your new baby's life take in every minute.
