Post Pregnancy Aversions - JFF

Every day I am reminded of 'morning sickness' as there are still 2 carry over aversions that are a direct result from my pregnancies...last one 9 years ago. Please share your weird foods or smells or whatever you developed an aversion to and still cannot tolerate.

For me, with pregnancy #1, I used St. Ives Collagen Elastin Lotion daily on my growing tummy. I had no stretch marks but I cannot stand the smell of it - still to this day. I will take a sneak sniff once in awhile to see if my nose will accept it yet - so far, 22 years later the answer is still no.

Then from pregnancy #3, I had such a strong gag reflex, that to this day when I brush my teeth, and I always brush or scrape my tongue next, I instantly start gagging just like when I was pregnant. Even the thought of scraping my tongue now can bring up the need to swallow quickly to keep the vomit reflex at bay.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Gals - thank you all soooo much for sharing your stories!! So many memories came flooding back. Especially the restaurant smells. Forgot about those horrid experiences.

Caraway. The smell of it makes me queasy. No idea why; it started in my 2nd pregnancy and I still, after my 6th, can't stand it.

Raisins, too. Had a bad experience with an oatmeal raisin cookie I ate in my 4th pregnancy. Morning sickness made me revisit it. Bleeeeh.

Tofu. Ate it before m/s set in w/ my first...then had leftovers sitting in my fridge when I felt like I was dying.

My Vans sneakers. YES-sneakers! I bought them when I had m/s and every time I wear them they make me queasy. TBH these shoes are more of a trigger for me than any food. Weird, eh?

I also bought 3 sweaters from Target around the same time-I actually gave those away...I just could NOT wear them.

On the flippity flap side of this Q, I absolutely LOVE the smell of Stayfree maxi pads...they smell like BABY HEAVEN to me.
What a weirdo I am to associate postpartum bleeding w/ happiness. Lol. :)

Tofu. Before I was pregnant, I rarely touched the stuff, not because I am anti-soy, I just didn't like it that much. While pregnant, I CRAVED raw tofu with sesame oil and soy sauce. I ate a block a day (not exaggerating). I simply couldn't get enough of the stuff. Blech.

Bergamot essential oil. I used to mix lavender and bergamot into my vitamin E and jojoba oil mix for my tummy. Even my love of Earl Grey tea has waned. It's a shame. Next time (if there is a next time) I'll be more careful to not over do something I love.

@ Emily, I didn't even think about clothes, but you're SO right! I gave away all my maternity wear. Please, never let me see it again!!!!

Burger King continues to make me totally nauseous since my first pregnancy 6 yrs ago. Not from eating there, but the smell of the burning greasy charbroiler exhaust..... gag! When I realized that I was going to have to start bringing a barf bag in the car just to drive past them, I had to develop a different route to get to work. To this day, I still gag a little at the smell and I have to leave the room when my coworkers get food from there for lunch. Eww!

I was brand new pg with our 2nd, when we bought a new car. It was a cute little nissan sentra but the new car smell of that car made me want to barf. I had to stop driving and riding in it and let my husband take it to work and I used the truck for months. After she was born I would still get that queasy feeling when it was warm and the new car smell came out more. Years later, long after we had sold that car, we took a trip to Hawaii and rented a car. Sure enough, it was a nissan sentra. When we opend the door to get in that wave of barf came over me again. We did sight seeing that day and everytime we parked and walked to see something, when we came back Id get sick just opening the door. I had to ride with my head out the window most of that day. We returned it and rode the city bus after that,,lol

I too cannot look a banana in the face since pregnancy #2. My husband and kids love them, but I can't stand the smell, taste, or texture.
Coconut milk makes me nauseous now; I used to love curries with coconut milk in the sauce but ever since the early days of pregnancy #2...nope. Still love Mounds bars, though.
Re: the poster below who can't eat nacho cheese Doritos...I wish I had an aversion to those! They are my true caloric weakness.:)

The smell of stale cigarettes on someones clothes or body. It never used to really bother me as long as people didn't smoke around me but when I was pregnant it made me sooooo nauseous!! My ex used to smoke and I remember being on vacation, we were in our hotel room and he had came back in from having a cigarette. I thought I was going to throw up. The windows didn't even open up all the way, just a couple of inches, so there I was with my mouth and nose stuck out this little gap in the window looking like a right fool. :-) or walking past a butcher shop!!! - GAG!!!

1st- Plain white rice. We were watching Survivor during that pregnancy and it looked so yummy I couldn't get it off my mind. That's all I could eat for months. Not now!

2nd- Macaroni and Cheese. I didn't eat a bunch like I did with the rice, but I used to love it and now I have a hard time breathing near the stove when I make it for my kids, who like most other kids love it.

I think it's funny that 3 of you mentioned Burger King. I can't stand driving by one because of the grill smell too...but have always hated that.

With my first...I ate half a box if not more of ho hos a day...they were my one vice the whole way through. To this day I really cant eat them. Just thinking about them...yuck.

My second...I eat a Skor bar and pretzels, constantly...I love the the salt, choclate and taffy combo. I can eat them now but, not together.

With my third I developed tastes for stuff, I had normally hated. Cucumbers being one of them. I love them now. I eat them on everything. I loved tomatoes...only while prego with him. And can no longer have milk or caffeine...I can handle teas and what not...I went from a double shot latte twice a day to either drinking iced-tea or only being able to have one Cola.

I think it is funny how drastically I changed after my third...I had curly hair that went straight. My feet had gone from a seven to a nine...and never had I broken out, until my second and third....

Burger King! My ex at that time was working at burger king (just out of high school) and as soon as I got pregnant the smell of him or the smell of whoppers being grilled as we passed by any burger king just made me nauseas and gag. Although I was lucky to not ever throw up with any of my pregnancies that smell made me gag. Even now 19 years later it makes me nauseas and want to gag when we pass by one! Weird isn't it? And go figure my kids love burger king!

My aversion is not smell but touch. Now there has always been one thing in life that I could not stand. BANANAS, yuck I dont like them never have. I could peel a banana for someone, however once prego #1 I have the worst time touching them. Which really sucks cause I love to make and eat banana bread. Touching bananas make me gag.

Then raw chicken. I still cook it, but touching it is horrible. The slimy skin (Shudder).

I have always had texture issues. However with both pregnancies it got worse. Touching things can send me gagging. It isnt always the same things though, it is a certain feel and when it occurs OMG. Also looking at things, the look of their texture can make me not want to touch something or eat something. I have traded meals with my husband at restaurants or sent my food back because of looks, even the way it felt in my mouth.

My poor sister and niece the other day wasnt sure what was wrong with me. We were eating sandwiches and a piece of gristle from the ham was in my mouth. I got it out fast but had to close my eyes and cover my mouth to keep from puking. I had to ask my daughter to take it and throw it in the trash for me. They thought I was choking and kept asking me questions. When I finally told my sister what happened she busted out laughing. She has seen me freak before but it had been awhile. Plus she thinks my banana thing is weird.

With my oldest, i could not eat bananas, the smell, the thought and the taste made me sick. With my second, I could eat them again. However, I ate so much corn with the first one that I couldn't look at it for a few years with out getting sick, even a picture made me sick. So I completely understands.

Broccoli! I liked it a lot before pregnancy. Now, it needs to be au gratin or something, hidden by fat and cheese, lol, or I just really don't like it. I serve it and eat it b/c I want my kids to, but I'm not feeling the love while I'm doing it.

Crawfish: I wouldn't say I have an aversion to it. But I used to cook it once a week. Then I was seriously, seriously sick during my first pregnancy and I'd buy my husband some boiled crawfish because I couldn't stand to cook it, then I'd leave it in the kitchen and run close the hall door, the bedroom door, light candles, and "hide" in my room until he'd eaten it, cleaned up the mess and taken the trash outside, and turned the dishwasher ON. He'd also light a citrus candle to take away lingering smell. Now....we eat it a couple times a year. I love it, but it's just never been "the same". :P

And I do that gag thing you mentioned. That's strange. My husband just shakes his head, lol.
