Post-Pregnancy Contraception

I was using the NuvaRing pre-pregnancy and really liked the ease of use, but even though it is low-dose as far as hormones go, I was having an increasingly bad reaction each month including depression symptoms and mood swings. We were using condoms prior to getting pregnant, but it is just no fun to switch from full contact to a barrier method - at least not for us. We were only sort of trying to prevent pregnancy as we were ready to be parents, but not in a hurry so getting pregnant wasn't a big deal, but I'm sure after giving birth I am not going to want to get pregnant again right away. I would love to get the scoop on other contraceptive options to look into after our little one arrives! :D Thank you!

What can I do next?

Well, I may be the only one that still uses birth control pills. I have used them for years and I have had no issues. No hormonal mood swings, depression, etc. I guess I am too worried to switch because they work for me. I have noticed that with all the new types of contreception there are many side affects that seem to be more common. However, it will all depend on your own body. Not sure if I have helped you at all, but that is what I am doing. I plan to get off of it around the end of July to try for a second child. It seems to work for me! :) Good Luck!

Do you plan on breastfeeding? That has an impact on the type of birth control you should use. (Please don't let that be the deciding factor to breatfeed or not!!) Anyway, I was on pogestrone only pills also called the mini-pill. It worked great for me until my daughter was about 14 months and we were breastfeeding a lot less. It has a very low level of hormone and because your hormones fluctuate while breastfeeding it can cause break through bleeding which is what I experienced. My doctor told me the nuva-ring was fine to use while breastfeeding but I opted against it because I was worried that it would affect her. If you plan to breastfeed mother nature helps out a little as birth control though I don't suggest using just her help:) Your best guess would be to talk to your doctor and explain to her what you want. You're going to be busy with a new baby and probably want the simplest birth control available!! Good luck!!

I was concerned about using hormones while I am breastfeeding so I went with the copper IUD. So far so good (I've had it for 3 months now)!! My fiance and I lack the control to use condoms and the only thing you have to do with the iud is check to make sure it's still there every now and then. (I check once a week just cuz I'm so worried about getting pregnant again right now.)

I have the Mirena IUC and I love it. Low dose of hormones. You never have to even think about it. It didn't hurt to have placed, my period are practically non-existent, I don't have the mood swings and migraines I had with the pill (I used the pill successfully for years, but after having kids, it just didn't work the same). If your insurance will cover it, it's worth looking into. (It's about $500+ without insurance.) You can have it removed anytime you want to get pregnant and your fertility returns almost immediately. There are some risks, so make sure you're okay with them before proceeding, but I don't think I'll ever go back to another form of birth control. I was trying to convince my husband to have a vasectomy, but I'm so happy with the IUC that I'll probably just keep having it replaced every 5 years.

I can't use hormones at all.. my body just doesn't handle them... I have the same symptoms you mentiones- I get depressed, moody, and to be honest- just plain psycho!!! I used the non hormone iud for a while, and I have also used a diaphragm with spermicide- both were effective! Hope that helps

I had the mirena IUD and it was great for not ever having to think about contraception. I had mine put in at my 6 week appointment. It has less hormones than the nuva ring also, so it might be a good choice for you:) I am currently on the nuva ring now because my IUD perforated my uterus (which is not common by the way, especially 13 months after insertion) I really want to go back to the IUD though because the nuva ring is so expensive!! And you will be meeting your deductible so the IUD will be really cheap for you:)
