I think my son has gotten a wind burn from this past winter and now has a bright red splotch on his face. I've been putting vaseline on it, maybe not as often as i should be. is there another option I can use? I was thinking an aloe based cream, but I don't know. Any suggestions thanks!
Wow, this response is so delayed! He has excema on his cheek, not windburn. So I used neosporin and it literally cleared up in one day!
My kids both have eczema and we use the generic brand (at Walmart) of Eucerin cream. It comes in a tub and lasts a long time. It's the only thing that consistently works -- including Aquaphor, which is good (just not enough).

Stop the vaseline and take him to the doctor. He should not still be red. Windburn like sunburn usually resolves in a week or two. A red patch that does not go away needs to be looked at.
Wish I could see a pic but don't think a wind burn would still be present from this winter. Is the blotch raised and in a circle - could be something like ring worm. Could be an eczema? Bright red is what is concerning.. I use therapeutic grade lavender oil (make sure its NOT perfume quality if you try this) on all skin lesions that happen to come up. Aloe is good also if you can find one that has the active part of the plant stabilized other wise you are wasting your money. Vaseline may not be the best choice because of the petroleum base - you could try triple antibiotic sparingly.
Windburn, like sunburn, usually clears up pretty quickly. Vaseline is best and washing it with cool water and mild soap. If he still has a red splotch on his face for more than a few weeks, you'd better take him to see his dr becasue it is probably not windburn.
cortizone cream. i think it is 1 or 2%. it is an over the counter cream. My kids and I use it.
Like others have said, windburn goes away really quickly. If he's had it for a long time, I bet it's something else. That said, both my girls get really chapped cheeks in the winter. I use Balmex on them. It takes the redness out almost immediately. Any diaper rash cream will work though. I use it on my cracked knuckles in the winter too.
Hi - to echo what others have said, it sounds like eczema. My son has it and we thought at first it was a rash from drooling while teething. Petroleum is good to "seal" it - make sure it is dry first. We use hydrocortisone cream - no higher than 1% on the face though. We also use the Target version of Aveeno moisturizer (no fragrance).
My little boy gets splotches when he gets strawberries or tomato sauce on his face. Your son may also be reacting to something similar, although the wind and cold does make my son's eczema worse. He may also have allergies - you might consider asking for a blood test at his next check-up. They can be expensive if your insurance doesn't cover it so call them first.
Lukewarm baths are helpful too - hot water makes it worse - and we try not to bath him every day unless he really gets into something.
Eucerin is "magic" cream in our house. It works great. Good Luck
My youngest gets very dry skin very easily, and I use Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion on him a couple times a day and it clears it right up.

From my experience, whenever I or my child has gotten wind burn it has gone away rather quickly on it's own in a day or two. I'm not sure what else it could be though. If it's a patch of really dry skin aveeno works well and also aquafur.
