Possible Reaction to Amoxicillin

My 15-month old son had an ear infection and his Ped. prescribed Amoxicillin. He took the full 10 day round of it and was fine. A day after he finished it all of a sudden he broke out in hives. It started with just a patch on his cheek that went away and then a patch on his leg that went away and then the next day his whole left leg was full of hives and a patch on his stomach. Since he didn't have anything new to eat the Ped. said it was probably a reaction to the amoxicillin but even if it happened 2 days after he stopped taking it? Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

The same thing happened to my son a few years ago. Only it wasn't his first time taking the Amoxiciilin it was 2nd or 3rd but we had to go to Emergency Room because not only was he covered with hives (his whole body) he started to swell up. I would never allow him to have Amoxicillin again. Who knows what could happen the next time. Hope that helps.

Yes, you are not alone. My daughter had a similiar reaction. She had strep throat and was taking Amoxicillin. Six days on the meds she began to break into hives all over her legs, then other areas on her body. I immediately called the Doc and they prescribed another medicine. The doc told me that it takes time to get into the system and for the body to begin to fight it. My daughter still can not take thAmoxixillin, although the doctor did say that he may want to give it another try, she may have grown out of it.

Wow! My eyes just popped! The same exact thing happened to my son at 14 months! He was on amox for ear, and on it for 10 days. My husband and I were away for the weekend, and my son was at my parents. They didn't tell me until we got home, but had taken him to the dr.b/c he broke out in hives too! I didn't know this was so common. Dr. said it was a reaction, and wrote in in his chart. How strange for it to be so late! I can learn a lot from other moms. :) Hope he is feeling better!

Yes, it can definitely happen. My nephew had it, and a neighbor just told me the exact same situation happened to her 19 month old daughter. Make sure they put it in your child's chart never to give him that antibiotic.

My son had the exact same reaction and it was the day after he stopped taking amoxicillin, the ped. said that the medicine stays in your system for quite some time so it is definitly a possibility, and that you should make sure to tell any doctor there is an allergy to it just in case.

Absolutely. I had the same thing happen after I told my
Docter I was allergic to Pennicillin. He said I should be
OK with amoxicillin but I wasn't.
Luckily this was a mild reaction but check it out. It could
be worse next time.

I just went through this with my son as well - he had all types of rashes from little red dots to patches of skin that were raised and rough - some red. He was on Augmentin which is another antibiotic. He also ended up getting the runs for 2 weeks and thrush in his mouth - all caused by the antibiotic. My older son never had problems with medicine so I guess each child reacts differently. My problem now is that he didn't want to eat during these couple of weeks because his mouth and belly hurt and now he is getting up three times a night for a bottle!

I have had experience with this. the first time my son took amoxicillin he had a very faint rash. My husband being allergic to penecillin said that my son was too. I didn't think so. Well the second time he took it, he was on it the full 10 days aswell, the next day he broke out in a terrible rash. The only way I can describe it is he looked like he had been burned all over his body. So we took him to the pediatrician and he confimed that our son is allergic to penecillin. I think that your son is too. I think you should ask about the possibility of your son being allergic to penecillin ASAP, because like I said the effects started out minor, but the more my son took the meds with penecillin the worse they became.

Good luck!

My daughter did the same exact thing! We thought she had sand flea bites because we had let her play in the sand at a local campground (her first time in the sand).
The next time she had an infection we tried it again and she came out with FULL-BLOWN hives all over her body, within a few days on the medicine. VERY SCARY!
We now have her take sulfer-based antibiotics and she does just fine with them. There are fewer to chose from, but they still work just as good. Zithromax is a gem! Dose is 5-days (lasts 10) and she likes taking it, smells like grape bubblegum.
Hope this helps!

i have had probs with other meds, not amox inparticular but it CAN happen. it doesnt need to cause a reaction right after you start using it, it can be days after.
stay away from that med just in case and have doc make a note of it on his chart.
my dog even reacted to a med the vet gave him and his chart was noted to not give that med again. happens with critters too....

Amoxicillin is a synthetic drug. When your baby was born his interior terrain was pristine. Introducting sythetic drugs is a toxin. The rash is just his body's way of getting rid of the poison. It is actually a good thing. It means his system recognized the toxin and is doing what it is supposed to do-get rid of it!

Yes, I have experienced this with both of my boys. My oldest was done taking amoxicillin and broke out with hives all over his body. He was off of it about a whole day. MY other son had a day left to take it and broke out mostly on his mid-section but all over. So, I would listen to your ped. and not try it again. Your son my have a worse reaction next time. Good luck!

Yes, my 6 year old has had similar reactions. The reason it happens days after is because the antibiotic is still in his system - antibiotics work in the blood for up to a week after you stop taking them if you follow the full course as you should. I had similar reactions as a child, so it didn't surprise me. So, I was never given a derivative of penicilin again until now at the ripe age of 42 I was tested for it and I am negative. So either I was never positive or I outgrew it. Who knows? You can take him to an allergist if you really want to have him tested, but there are so many other antibiotics out there, it is just as east to avoid it. Good luck.

It's possible. I had a reaction to Amoxicillian and Ampicillin as a child. Both times I had the hives as your son did. I don't use Pennicillin anymore. My kids have no issue with it. You can request a different antibiotic in the future. Good luck.

Yes, personally. I don't think I was ever allergic to any medication, however, I had a tooth pulled while 3 months pregnant. After a full course on the anti-biotics I was itchy and braeking out in hives everywhere. The relief came from Benadryl.

Does not sound like a reaction. Sounds more like a virus
on top of an ear infection. Many viruses appear as hives.

Hi, I can't speak about little kid's reactions...but I know that I developed an allergic reaction to amoxicillin when I was in my early 20's. I had taken it plenty of times in my childhood and adolescence without a problem. I broke out in hives after being on the medication for about 5 days. The doctor said this was totally possible. I'm not sure if this helps, but I hope your son is okay!

There are many children and adults with allergies to antibiotics. There are alternative to amoxicillin. Ask your pediatrician. Also you can limit your use of needing antibiotics by reducing the frequency of ear infections to begin with. i have converted my whole house to less harmful, non caustic cleaning supplies and other health care products. My fridge used to be constantly full of that little pink bottle of antibiotic! This year we've only had 2 sick visits and I have 3 kids in elementary school! It has been so nice! If you want to know more about this you can contact me at: ____@____.com
Good luck to you!

My son (now 3 years old ) had the same reaction after he was finished with the amoxicillin at around 15 months as well. He had taken amoxicillin before with no reaction, but our pediatrician told us the same thing. Sometimes the reaction comes when the medication is finished. He changed the medication (I can't remember what the new one was, since he hasn't had an ear infection in over a year now..yay!), and the new one worked just as well. It's not worth taking any chances. We fill out all paperwork stating that he's allergic to penicillin. We have a 6 month old daughter, and she's already had 2 ear infections and seems to be doing OK so far with the amox.
I hope this helps you!

The same exact thing happened to my daughter years ago. The pediatrician said that it was most likely the virus itself causing the hives and not the amox. They were gone the following day and she never had them again after subsequent amox. treatments.

Not for nothing, but I always took amoxicillin as a child and never had a bad/allergic reaction. My doctor gave me some 2 yrs ago. Two days into the persription I spiked a 104 fever, but the hives didn't start till a few days after that. I was quite surprised and my husband a little freaked out. I stopped taking the meds and cleared up in a day or two.My son also had a bad reaction. The doctor said it's more common than you'd think!!! Best wishes.

Hi D., My son had a similar reaction to a different type of antibiotic. He ended up with the hives all over his body (we at first thought he had moskito bites or something). It took a good week or so for the hives to fade away and with a certain topical cream, ask the pediatrician. Just be patient they will go away, your son will be fine. Good Luck...

My daughter took Amoxicillian many times before having her first reaction to it. She had her reaction on the final day of a 10 day course of amoxicillian. she ended up rushed to the ER just short of a MAJOR reaction.
The hives your son is experiencing could certainly be related to the Amoxicillian. Do not allow him to have it again as the next reaction could severe!!!
Good Luck!

I found out that my daughter was allergic to Amoxicillin when she was about 4 years old. She had also been on the Amoxicillin before that time and never had a reaction. The doctor told me that it doesn't always happen the first or second time they are on it. Anyway, she didn't have a reaction until about the 8th day so I was surprised too. She got hives all over her face and her face blew up to the point where I was so frightened. I rushed her to the ER because I was afraid that her throat could be closing. I would not doubt at all that it could have been the Amoxicillin with your son.

It can happen. I'm actually an allergy nurse. For some people it happens with in 15 min to an hour after ingestion, for others it can happen in the middle of the course of meds and for the rest it will happen even after they've finished the meds. It's weird but everyone's bodies react differently to different things.
