Possible Pulled Muscle

I need some reassurance. I have looked everywhere on the web, and can't find anything related to my problem: it is the middle of the night, I was readjusting in bed, on my left side, and somehow when I lifted up, to roll over further, I think (I was sleeping), I pulled something. It hurts soooo bad, making me nauseous, and very, very worried. To give an idea of the location, I had a c-section with my daughter, and the left end of the (horizontal) scar "points" to the problem area. Baby is now VERY active, but the pain is not subsiding. I need to know if anyone else has done this sort of thing, and whether all was well. I'm freaking out, thinking about the horrible things that may have happened, like uterine rupture - although unlikely, and really too late to fix, I am worried. I keep checking myself for bulging or leaking, thinking of the Friends episode where Joey gets a hernea. I am 26 weeks pregnant. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thank you all sooooooooo much for your responses. It's really nice to have a pool of moms to ask about stuff. I did call my doctor the minute the office opened and got him on the phone, told him what happened, and he said, "It happens all the time." No big deal, use a heating pad if desired, but it's fine. So, whew! I was so scared, though! It's a little swollen, but already feeling much better. Thanks again.

HI! A.,
I did that 22 yrs ago with my first child. I was extremely sore, but fine. The muscles are so stretched after being pregnant that it took sooooo looooonnng for them to tighten back up. DEFINITELY check in with your obs. to make sure there isn't a problem. Try to slowly ease the pain away-it will take time. Also try warm wet compresses.Work those muscles carefully, but often. Before doing any of these things make sure there's not a problem with the tissues and scar from previous c-section. Let me know how you're doing. ____@____.com T. D.

Personally, I would go to a doctor to make sure that you didn't actually pull something. But... it could be an extremely rare pregnancy disorder called Pubic Symphisitis (I can't recall exactly how to spell it) or Pubic Symphisis Disorder. It happens when the pregnancy hormones that relax all of your ligaments so that your hips can open for the delivery of your baby go overboard and the ligament that attaches your pubic bone overstreches allowing your hips to more or less fall in and out of joint. The most notable symptom (at least it was for me)is having trouble rolling over in bed or excruciating pain rolling over in bed. I think that you can do a test where you get down on all fours and try to lift your leg out to the side and if you can't do it, it is another symptom. It can also hurt while your just standing or walking, but it is usually intermitent. Sometimes it's really bad and sometimes its not so bad. I had a lot of trouble going up steps. I, like you, thought I had torn something serious and went to the doctor. They really had no idea what was wrong and just wanted to put me on bed rest (military doctors...). I found some stuff on the web and then brought it to the doctors and sure enough, that was what I had. The only thing that they can do for you is 1. put you on pills that tighten up your ligaments, which is not really a good option seeming how you will need them loose for delivery or 2. send you to a chiropractor to continually adjust your pelvis and hips... On a positive note, the pain usually disappears almost immediately after childbirth. And I, too, have two children and had no problems with my first. It all happened with my second. Now that you know the name of the disorder, if you look it up on the web, there is all sorts of information- diagnostic, etc..., but you really should go to the doctor just to be sure:)

I agree girl call your doctor. Especially since the pain is where it is. When you call tell them you are very worried so they get you in asap. If it happened to me I would be on the phone. Good luck take care.

I did something similar, only I was 38 or 39 weeks pregnant. There was a dog in our backyard that belonged to a neighbour down the street, he was causing rucus at midnight one night so I grabbed a leash and decided to take him home. He was walking me, and on the way back I was hurting really bad. To the point where I couldn't walk anymore and I couldn't move at all it hurt so bad. I called my doctor the next morning, and she told me I pulled a muscle to take some Tylenol and use a heating pad on the area as much as possible. It helped a little.

hello A.,
I had 3 C-sections and it does happen all of the time, you will be ok just keep updating your doctor..good luck to you and your soon to be bundle of joy

A.,

I have 3 children, my youngest born in 2000 at 26 weeks. Please go to the doctor as soon as possible. It is probably nothing, but my baby was early due to a uterine rupture undiagnosed until approximately 3 weeks after it happened. A torn ligament can definitely cause nerve wrecking symptoms after a c-section. All three of mine were c's so I can honestly say I know!
I just wanted to tell you that the dr. would be the best to give you the reassurance you need right now. Better safe than sorry!
We live in Lawrenceville, not too far from Athens. Let me know how you are doing!

oh, hon...please go to the Dr. and have this checked out. Its possible its just the pangs of pregnancy, but then again its better to be safe than sorry.

please keep us updated.

I agree with everyone else call you doc asap.. It might not be anything but its better to be safe than sorry and if your worried about it, its nice to have a doc to say its okay.. Look at it this way at least you'll hear your baby's heartbeat again. (The best part of all doc's visits) Congratulations on having a boy.
