I think my three year old has some kind of allergy. He has been stuffed up for about 3 weeks, and it gets worse at night. He is sneezing a lot and this morning when he woke up one eye was puffy, but no puss or crust or anything. How can i tell if he is allergic to dust or something? should i take him to the doctor? He doesn't seem bothered by it, but i would like him to get better. i would have thought a cold would have cleared up by now. I don't know what to do.

What can I do next?

It is probably the pollen. It is real bad this year. Try giving him some childrens allergy medicine and see if that helps. If there is no temp it probably is just allergies. My son has allergies and the childrens benadryl helps him a lot and it doesn't make him drowsy or hyper.

He very well could have seasonal allergies. I don't know how bad the pollen is in VA but in SC the tree pollen is horrid!! Covers everything in yellow!!!!! Grass is also starting right about now too in most areas. My 11 month old started getting a really bad stuffy nose a while back and after getting tired of taking the booger sucker too him 3 times or more a day I bought some childrens Claritin. It seemed to help for the most part. But my daughter never had a problem with allergies when we lived in IN but after moving down here she is on Flonase from Feb to around Aug now!!! I've got seasonal allergies and it got way worse after I moved too. He is old enough that his Ped can send him to a specialist to be tested for different things so you can narrow it down. I think it is a skin test that they can do.

Hope you get your little guy feeling better soon!!

sounds like alergies, but your best bet is asking his doctor. thats the only way to know for sure and he can also tell you whats the best treatment for your childs specific allergies.

Have you tried giving him over the counter allergy meds to see if they help at all? I really would consider taking him to the doctor. All of my girls have allergies and they make them miserable without a daily medicene. The pollen here is crazy, so maybe even benedryl at night would help.

Hi D.,

Yes it does sound like your child has allergies. I have two boys 3 & 4, they both have allergies & asthma. I give them over the counter Claritin chewable tablets. It helps some. You can take him to the doctor and they can give you a prescription for allergies. My children were give Zyrtec, but I just assume to buy the over the counter medication. That is only because I don't have health insurance right now though. But it works just as well.
Also, I have allergies and this morning my eye was swollen also. So I'm pretty sure that this is allergy sysmptoms.
Good luck and hope it gets better.

I have a daughter who is 4 and has severe allergies that I have been fighting for 2 years now. I have found that I can give her Children's Claritin in the morning and Benedryl as needed and it helps her tremendously. Another thing to maybe ask the doctor about the next time you are in is Zyrtec. I have 2 children on it right now and it has worked wonders for them. Best of luck to you and your son.

Hi D.
I'm 43 and have never had allergies before till I moved here...and I've had those exact symptoms since Jan!!! I finally went to a doctor 2 days ago and she said that she'd write me a referral so that I could get the official allergy test but also suggested I try Nasonex nasal spray (note this takes 7 days before it's effective) or Allegra and see if that works....my 5 year old she said to give Zyertec. You might want to try something over the counter first to see if it makes a difference otherwise go see the doctor and have the skin tests done. There is something you can buy and put on the arms about 1 hour before the skin test and it will make the arm numb so that he won't feel the pricking. Best of luck. T. K.

If you are around alot of pollen, it could be that. If you have a humidifier, I would put that in his room at night so he can breath better.

If you wanted to have him tested for allergies to see if and what he's allergic too, Dr. Schecker is a good allergist-he's located if going North on the By-pass right passed South Strand Ambulatory on 3516 Caduceus Dr ###-###-####. I took my baby to him because of a constant runny/stuffy nose. He was wonderful. He tested her for different allergens. She wasn't allergic, but he said it was reflux-he was right. My pediatrician gave me the referral, and I also have a friend who sees him for her severe allergies and she loves him.
