Pooping on the Potty! - Marietta,GA

My son, almost 4, has been potty trained for just over a year. He has no problem peeing on the potty and never has accidents. However, I cannot get the child to poop on the potty. He does it in his pants. Anyone have sugestions or advice? I am about to have another baby and am at my wits end with this.

What can I do next?

I am going through the same thing. My mom said to take him in the bathroom and just sit in there with him and read till he goes...i am going to try this - peepee is no problem...poopoo, well he holds it till he is so consipated. So, try hanging out in the bathroom! Good luck

here is a couple of things to try:

1. potty train- draw a train track and he gets one sticker for pee two for poop and one taken away for an accident. give him treats when he hits certain points.

2. ask him why he doesnt. he may give you a reason that makes sense. some kids are scared that there poop is going somewhere, etc. weird thoughts come out of their mouths.

3. try other bribes...

my son is almost 5 now so I cannot remember vividly but I am pretty sure that I made him go barebutt!! he was the same way - always peeing on the potty but refusing to poop there. he always squatted down behind the couch. I made him sit on a towel wherever he went. but honestly the light just has to come on for him. I am with you though - it is MADDENING. Makes ya want to pull your hair out. One day he will just do it and it will be like he's always done it.. best of luck. L. :-)

Hi L.,

Never had that Problem! My son is 4yrs old as well! What may
help is if you took him into the bathroom when YOU pooped! I
know that sounds gross but My Mother always did that with my
son to show him that everybody poops in the potty! Also....let
him wear his diaper a little longer after he poops in it! Not
being mean...but may convince him to change his mind!

Good Luck!

Hello! We had the same problem with our son. He was trained to pee in the potty for at least a year before he would poop. We knew he was able to control his bowels, because he would sit on the potty for 20 mins without going and then immediatley get up and go in his pants. Here are a few things we tried: small toy for each success (matchbox car in our case), sticker chart (with a large treat at the end), and snack of choice, PRESCHOOL and the you must use the potty rule (he had one accident there and got pretty upset about it). Truthfully though, the only thing that finally worked was we left him alone :).
Good Luck!!!
