Pooping in the Tub! Yuck!

My one year old is all of a sudden pooping in the tub when she has her evening bath. When I give her a bath, I'm all business and really don't spend a lot of time letting her play in the tub. But most of the time, daddy baths her while I clean up dinner and he lets her play and take her time. That's when she poops. My mom suggested to get a potty seat and when she starts to poop, just plop her on the seat. I'm sure she's still a little young to be potty trained, but who knows, it may work? I thought to give her a little "time" after eating to do her business before her bath, but with her self feeding, she's a MESS. Any suggestions??

What can I do next?

Eating causes the bowels to move about a half hour later. Maybe wait a little bit before putting her in the tub.

My son used to do this. I would wipe him down as much as I could after dinner and then try to hold off on giving a bath for a little bit. It worked for him.
Good luck!

I would definetly get the potty seat (get the kind that sits on your toilet seat...saves a lot of clean up, just get a stool for her to rest her feet on). The bath is warm and relaxing to ALL muscles, she can wiggle and move and work it out. If she knows she is doing it (or you can see it coming on) then I would say she's ready for the toilet...not saying she would be potty trained but atleast getting familar with it. Good luck (and the accidents are going to happen even when they are potty trained :-)

All three of my daughters did that. I think the bath really relaxes them and they can't help it. It is even more gross when they bathe with a sibling. I used to try to get mine to go before the bath or ask while they are in there if they feel like they have to go and get them on the potty. I can not say it worked, but it did stop before long. Tell your husband to pay attention to when she is playing if there is a moment when she gets really quiet or looks like she is really relaxed cause she might be ready to go then and he can get her out.

My daughter potty trained at 18 months, so it's not too young. She pooped in the potty once (with her older brother in there too -- he was 3) and the reaction she got helped put that in check-- we took the poop and put it in the potty and verbally told her that she cannot poop in the potty-- her brother was totally grossed out and he actually did not to take a bath with her for awhile and that upset her so she took it seriously (of course she was able to talk well at this age)-- we never had the problems again. I would definitely get a potty seat and tell her it's not ok to poop in the tub-- she needs to try to poop in the potty and I would put her on the potty seat and read her books for 20 minutes before her bath-- since she is going regularly at this time-- and if she poops in the potty give her a treat and make a BIG deal out of it!

Good luck!

Katie, its actually very common for the babies to poop in the water. Bath time relaxes them "completely" and thus relaxes the bowels. It actually would be a GREAT idea to get a potty for her too. My now 8 yr old was potty trained completely by the time she was 18 months. Its never too early as long as you see she is already going out of the diaper.

I have to disagree with the posters who said it's not too early to potty train. It is the minority who have children potty trained before 2. I had one of those minorities with my now 9 year old daughter...she was 21 months. BUT my boys took much longer...about 3 1/2. I've done the reading about early potty training, but in actuality I think it is parent training that these progams succeed in accomplishing. Not that it's a bad idea, the parents learn the cues that a child is about to go and puts the baby on the potty. The child will learn but it may not make it much ealier. Anyway, this isn't actually a potty training question, I just don't like to hear the comments about the early trained children and make you think that 18 months is a normal age to be potty trained..it really isn't. As far as pooping in the tub...totally normal. Just something we have to deal with. Have fun with it, it is a memory to tell your daughter when she's older, lol.
