Hi mom's. I wrote about a week or so ago, but here I am again regarding my son's poo. He has had diarrhea/runny stool for over 2 weeks. We have been to the Dr. numerous times and have yet to find anything. They did a test for blood in the stool, but none was found. They sent me to Labcorp to have his stool test for a bunch of other things, and I am waiting the results, but its driving me nuts. This all started after he had a cold, but that is 99% gone now and still the diarrhea. He is eating fine, playing fine, has told me his belly doesn't hurt, so I really don't know what to do or what the cause is. We haven't changed anything in his diet and have tried the whole BRAT diet, but nothing is working. He isn't dehydrated, so that isn't my concern. I just don't know what else to do. It was up to 5 times a day, now only 1 maybe 2 times, but there is Nothing solid about it. Anyone else had this happen or have any insight as to what may be causing this?

What can I do next?

I went through this with my two younger ones and had to change what they were drinking. I had to go to lactose free milk and get them on probiotics yogurt, like stoney brook farms. It turned out that while they were sick their whole intestines got out of kilter. So we had to take out all dairy that wasn't lactose free with the exception of the probiotic yogurt.

My kids were the same way. They ate, slept, played, didn't have a fever or complain of discomfort but had diarrhea for days on end.

Hope this helps.

Add more fiber and eliminate all juice for the next week or so water and milk only. It won't be easy but try. So long as he is not dehydrated and seems fine otherwise be patient for those results. I would also add probiatics (sp) To his yogurt he may have a little bud left in the digestive tract that is taking its time to leave. Good Luck!

Our pediatrician told us once the gut is irritated it can stay irritated for a long time after the initial source of irritation has resolved itself. Keeping up with BRAT and having him eat some yogurt can help beneficial bacteria to get re-established in his digestive tract. It sounds like he's getting better it's just happening very slowly - and that is very typical. Another week or two and your son should be fine. Keeping diaper rash at bay through all this is the next challenge.

Erin, your sons symptoms sound familiar to me as what happened to me when I was 25. If no one has tested for this yet, ask your doctor to test for Celiac (Celiac Disease is it's 'full' name - pronounced Sea-Lee-Ack). It's a simple bloodtest!

Basically, it's an intolerance to gluten which is found in wheat, rye, oats and barley products. It sounds alot worst than it is! So, please don't let me scare you. It's 100% treatable with just a food diet avoiding those foods.

When I was diagnosed at 25, I had very loose stools where at times, you can barely make it to the bathroom and generally soon after eating. Pleaes don't just 'try' this and see if it corrects itself because you need to have the symptoms when tested. I can give you much more info if you wish to pursue this. You can also google celiac disease on the internet - but remember, the internet sometimes makes things sound so much worst than they are.

I'm now 41 and never had any problems/issues before I was 25 and all of a sudden, I started getting sick with the loose stools. No other symptoms. It could be just a virus, however it's better to have this one bloodtest taken and know forsure if you can cross that off the list. It often appears in young kids as they experiment with trying the different foods and getting off the babyfood stuff.

Please feel free to email me further if you wish more info.

Good Luck. I hope you find your answer quickly for you and your son. It's never fun going thru that.

My son had a similar situation earlier this year and it was so frustrating! Minor illness which turned into an extended bout of diarrhea. When I brought him to the doc they explained to me that sometimes a minor illness can cause a temporary lactose intolerance. My son was on formula at the time, so the doc told me to give him lactose free formula till it cleared. Well, my son wouldn't drink it, so my hubby (an adult med doc) had me put him on Pedialyte only for a few days. The diarrhea completely stopped within 24 hrs. Now, whenever he gets diarrhea, the Pedialyte comes out and it is over much sooner than ever!

Make sure they check for C-Diff. My son had the same thing when he was almost 2. It took several weeks before they tested for the right bacteria. Probiotics are key to getting getting your son's system back in order. You can get a kids powder that's flavored and can be added to drinks or food. Hope this helps.

My daughter went through this following a round of strong antibiotics. She actually had diarrhea for months (back and forth to the doctor and finally to a GI doc). She couldn't maintain her weight anymore and was considered malnourished. They thought she had Celiac's disease and did an endoscopy (had to put her under anesthesia for that one) only to eventually find out that she had a C. Difficile infection from the antibiotic. If he was on any antibiotics during the time he had the cold, consider having them test his stool for C. Diff. It's rare for this to happen, but it happened to my poor baby and she was miserable. It's a good sign that he isn't fazed by it and that his belly doesn't hurt (she was miserable and her belly hurt really bad), but may be one other thing to check.
