Poop on the Carpet- Yuck

This is really disgusting but my son took his diaper off last night and when I came back in the room there were deposits of poop in like four places in the room. I, of course picked it up, scrubed the carpeted area with soap and a scrub brush and then this morning used a little green machine carpet cleaner in those areas but it still has a very bad odor - does anyone have any suggestions for me to get this area clean and smelling decent. I am totally grossed out especially since I have a baby that crawls.

I like to stay away from harsh chemicals as much as possible and go the natural route but at this point I really need the smell gone and would like the carpet to be clean.

What can I do next?

Hi Victoria,
I have heard that baking soda freshens. You may want to sprinkle some ont he stains and let it sit for awhile and then vaccuum it up.

First of all, i'm glad i'm not the only one.. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old who still wears diapers at nap and night time. They BOTH do this except they plaster the walls too. I first use HOT HOT water and a cloth to soften it up if it has dried at all, then scrub it out. Then I take carpet cleaner (for the carpet shampooer) and dilute it and scrub with that. If it's bad enough I just use the shampooer itself. As for the smell, it's one of those that just sticks for a while. If he keeps doing it put his diaper on backwards. He may also be uncomfortable in it and may be ready to potty. (My almost 4 year old girl still isn't, but my 2 1/2 year old boy is starting to)Good luck!

When my oldest was still in diapers, she did the same thing but she added rubbing it on the walls and her toys too. I of course scrubbed all the toys and the walls with a bleach and water solution. Then for the carpet I used a product called Nature's Miracle. You can get it in pet stores. It worked wonders and is supposed to have natural enzymes that break up the stains and odors.

I would try sprinkling some baking soda over the spots and letting it sit for several hours/overnight. Then vacuum it up. Hope it works.

vinegar - use it in the carpet steamer instead of the carpet shampoo - works great!

How about a hand held spot carpet steam cleaner? There seem to be quite a few available on Amazon.com. Read the reviews, the pros/cons and find one that will work best for your situation for under $100.

This is how I got diarrhea out of a mattress that was hit during the recent stomach bug epidemic. I started out with and Oxi-clean solution and brushed it in to break up the soil. Then after I blotted up the Oxi-clean I added some upholstery cleaner (the kind that you can buy for your car, comes in a tall can with a plastic brush around the nozzle) scrub with the brush then firmly blot and rub with a white towel to lift up the soil. I push down really hard with the towel to get it to soak all of the cleaning liquid up and the soil comes up with it. Then to get rid of the smell I used the new Febreeze that's intended for pet odors. This combo worked wonders, there is NO stain and NO odor.

Since it's just carpet for you and not something thicker and more absorbent like a mattress, then I would skip the Oxi-clean and just use the upholstery cleaner. I do this with my white carpet and have gotten poop, throw up, kool-aid, mud, blood you name it up out of my carpet. We have lived in our house for a year now and I have two little boys, a dog and a husband (sometimes absent minded, spills soda a lot) and my carpet still looks brand new. Just grab a can of the cleaner (Turtle Wax makes a great one) in the automotive section of Wal-mart or Target. It really works.

Wine away really works! My son used to the do same thing all the time. it's a red wine stain remover, but it also works on urine too. (takes the smell out!) It acts as a neutralizer and It is made from vegetable extracts and has a nice citrus sent. It is safe to use around children and pets and is biodegradeable and contains no phosphates or bleach, so it is safe for your carpet, etc (I'm reading from the back of the bottle, hee hee)... We were dog sitting and the dog peed at the top of the stairs, the smell was horrible, I used oxyclean and every other stain remover I have, then I remembered about the wine away from when my kids were little. That was the only thing that worked! You can get it at some wine stores, sometimes grocery stores if they carry wine accessory type things. I do in home wine tasting parties (which is why I had it on hand) and we sell it on our websites too, www.myttv.com/Laura5649. I hope you get the smell out no matter what you have to use, but I swear by this stuff!!

I've used Bac Out on really nasty things and even use it in my diaper wash when my microfiber inserts start to get stinky even after washing. It's a citrus based cleaner that is WONDERFUL! I have put it in my little green machine when I run out of Bissel fluid and it works just as well. You can pick it up at Farm Fresh in the natural foods section or maybe even at Heritage. If it weren't almost $10/bottle I'd use it on everything.

Victoria,

There is a whole group of products designed for "pet odor" removal (read urine and poop). These products break down the enzymes in ANY animals waste - even cats. The 1st one that I knew abt was Petzyme (get it at any petstore), but lots of manufacturers are making similar ones. My girls (10mos apart) painted each other and their room when they first moved to toddler beds. I have never seen or smelled anything quite like it, but you would never know by their room that they did it...They will tell you now that they are not allowed to paint with poop, though. <g>

Good luck. Mine didn't do it more than the once. I think my face must have been that scarey.

The pet stores have a product that gets rid of cat/dog bathroom odors. It's basically a natural enzyme product, I don't see why that wouldn't work. Maybe a medical supply store? Seems to me there has to be a product out there for just such a thing- Assisted living/nursing home type places would have the exact problem. Good luck!

A great way to get smells out is baking soda and vinegar, then use a wet/dry vacuum, or a carpet cleaner (the machine, like a shampooer, with no added chemicals!) to get the baking soda and vinegar up. We've used it when kids or dogs have gotten sick or had accidents. Also, you know exactly what's been on your floor-baking soda, vinegar, and water. You just make sure you get all the baking soda and vinegar out by using the water in the carpet cleaner, the smell is gone, and no worries about germs!

Yep! I agree Nature's Miracle. White bottle (red lettering I think) The natural enzymes eat up the little smells and bacteria and leave a fresh, clean scent.(and it is cuz the bacteria are truly gone)It even works better than febreeze when you are sprizting couches and drapes to freshen them between dry cleanings. Get at Petsmart or any pet supply -maybe even Kmart and Walmart now.

When my son started taking off the diaper with poo in it - the Pediatrician advised I use duct tape to keep them on until I wanted them removed (Carefully keeping away from skin)- worked like a charm. I FREAK when I see anything brown outside the potty or diaper - it's like Kryptonite - it makes me weak and powerless cos it's just SO GROSS !!!

my husband taught me a trick that he used back in his party days for cleaning carpets of mess. Use window cleaner, spray liberally, and scoop the cleaner back out of the carpet with a spoon. It sounds weird, I know. But he did it when our son vomited all over the carpet in his bedroom and I never smelled any reside of vomit at all.
Good luck!
