Poop Help
Hi moms,
I don't quite know how to explain our problem but i'll try. My 2 year old son has been having a hard time going to the bathroom today. He is going in tiny little bits which is not usual for him. What comes out is pretty sticky but does not seem hard so I don't think he is constipated. He has also been farting a lot and the farts are also pushing out tiny bits of poop (skidmarks?). This has caused his bottom to be completely raw and painful. Any ideas how to get him back to a normal bowel movement really quickly?

My 3yr old has had poop problems for a long time. She's fine now but she used to hold it and wouldn't allow herself to go. Anyway, to get the poop out right now when he is trying to go, try the Pedia-Lax liquid glycerine suppositories. They work really fast. My daughter would go in like 30 seconds after having that inserted and because it's glycerin, everything comes out really slippery and easily. I never had to use all of it either. Just one squirt from the bulb is all I ever gave her and it worked fine. I also would squirt a little glycerin out onto her rectum before I inserted it for easier placement.

Miralax. It will help and is the least invasive method, believe me. There is only one kind, for adults & kids, and you can give your two year old (at least my ped. said about my two year old) a full adult dose if he is constipated, and then you can ramp back down.
Good luck!

That's exactly what happens when my daughter (same age) is constipated--the first time it happened I thought she had diarreah or something and was trying to hold it in! Eventually a big fairly solid poop came out (though not as hard as I expected), and the mystery was solved. Though her diet is high in fruits, veggies and whole grains, she still gets constipated occasionally. When it happens I restrict her snacks to prunes, dried apricots, fresh and dried berries, encourage her to drink lots of water, and limit juice and dairy products (apple juice is constipating, so don't give it to him--and prunes are 10X better than prune juice in relieving constipation). I also try to get her moving a lot, like swimming, bouncing, running, etc. Then whenever she strains to poop (and gets upset), I hold her hands, try to help her bend over a little, rub her back, and encourage her to relax and let it come out (I think she fights it because it hurts). Sometimes I let her have a little of my coffee in the morning too if she's constipated--not that coffee's great for little ones, but I reasoned a couple of sips might help more than hurt! Also, whenever the skidmarks show up, I coat her bottom with Aquaphor after every diaper change, because if I don't it gets raw and painful down there, too. Good luck!

I echo what your other two respondents have said re using fruits and veggies to help get him back on track. I also recommend that you think back to what he's eaten in the last couple of days to see if you can identify any pattern that may have led to this problem. Also be sure you think about how much he's been drinking. Often a problem of this type comes about because we neglect to get enough liquids into our systems. I would definitely use all the nutritional methods for a couple of days before resorting to any type of laxatives.

This happens to my 2 year old sometimes even though he eats TONS of fruit. On days like this I give him YoBaby yogurt and prune juice and by the next day - watch out!!! The probiotics in the yogurt help get everything moving and also help tremendously with any diaper rash that may occur by "upping the good bateria" so to speak. Have your little one dip apples and grapes into the yummy yogurt (they have lots of good flavors too) and the kids are getting fiber (which help them poop) too with the apples - yum yum!!

Kiwis! Kiwis will get him flowing in no time. We have them as Part of the kids' morning smoothie. We also just recently started giving our 3 year old probiotics everyday and she's going like crazy. As a bonus, an article just came out in "Pediatrics" linking probiotics to a stronger immune system. Maybe something to try. We got ours at our local natural foods store but I think Raley's has a liquid one that might work ( you could throw it in that smoothie along with the kiwis). Good luck.

Apple juice, raisins, prunes (prune juice). =) Make sure he is getting plenty of veggies.

Hi H.-
I would try no bananas (if he is eating them) and maybe give him a little miralax. This is what my sister does with her son. I hope it helps.
