Political Question for Romney Supporters

At this time I am still undecided who I'm voting for but leaning more towards Obama. I would like to know for those of you that are voting for Romney, what is it that you like about him? What do you feel that he is going to do for our Country? I admit the part that gets me those most is Romney, if elected will take away Medicare for those that need it. With many seniors that no longer have health insurance, what will these people do if they were to get seriously sick?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Glenda: I thought long and hard about the abortion issue too. My thought on that is yes, abortion is wrong, but so is killing 1,000's of innocent civilians in other countries because Romney will continue to support the war and put much of the budget towards military.

I really don't need a reason. My house was just purchased for $100k LESS then what we paid for it, 7 years ago..Thank you Congress, and thank you Obama..I have no desire to see the democrats take over another 4 years, add to their already rising debt, and see most of my friends struggling to pay their mortgages, health insurances, and put food on the damn table.

I will give Romney a chance, because he is a business man, and has business sense. I'm sorry but I don't need the President to just hold my hand and sing Kumbaya, and preach about Hope and Change. When I certainly haven't seen it.

If I step in a puddle of water feeling it won't go past the sole of my shoe and I end up with water up to my ankle, I'll remember to avoid that puddle of water the next time I see it (Scene from "Ground Hog Day").

If I see and smell a chili that looks wonderful, I'll take a sample. If my first bite burns my mouth and numb's my tongue, I'll not eat any more.

Obama promised economic recovery. He said that increasing the deficit $4 Trillion dollars over 8 years (Bush's term) was unpatrotic. Obama said that if he coudn't cut the deficit in half during his first 4 years, he wouldn't run for a second term. Obama blocked the pipeline that would run from Canada to refineries in the United States killing thousands of jobs. (If we have to buy foreign oil, I'd much rather buy it from Canada, than from countries that support terrorists.) We have had 8% unemployment for 4 years. If the unemployment is cut in half, then the deficit will drop. (Why? Working people pay taxes and aren't on food stamps.) Obama won last time and had a democratic congress and senate during his first 2 years. He has had 4 years. He did not cut the deficit in half.

Obama hasn't given us economic recovery. He increased the deficit by $5 Trillion dollars over his first four years. He could have passed anything. He passed Obamacare. He would not have been able to pass Obamacare during his second 2 years. He could have done anything he wanted to do to improve or change the economy during his first two years. He allowed illegal aliens to draw social security. He blocked the INS from enforcing our border and imigration laws. Arizona passed an emigration law that kept illegal aliens from crossing the border and Obama required the US Attorney General to sue Arizona to stop their enforcing US immigration law. When Obama was sworn in oil was about $35 a barrel. Today it is almost $90 per barrel. Reducing the price of gas under Romney would have a greater positive impact on the average family's disposable income than any Romney tax cut even thought of. Obama's wife has flown all over the world at taxpayer;s expense. She has more personal servants than the previous 4 presidents' wives COMBINED. AND I could go on and on. Here's what CNN said about Obama's plan for the next 4 years http://www.ijreview.com/2012/10/20073-cnn-obamas-plan-is-...

ENOUGH ABOUT OBAMA'S FAILURES. (Remember what I said about stepping in the puddle of water and the chili?)

What about Romney?

Romney has succeeded where Obama has failed. Romney cares about others and put his money where his mouth is. Romney has given about 6 times more to charity (percentage wise) than Obama and Biden combined and Romney has done it for decades. Romney balanced the Massachusetts budget. Romney reduced Massachusetts unemployment and increased Massachusetts employment and jobs. Romney is all about more jobs where Obama is all about more people on food stamps. During Obama's watch, food stams increased from 32 million on food stamps to 47 million on food stamps. Romney cut Massachusetts taxes 19 times. AND he did it with a state legislature that was 87% democratic. Romney had a higher percentage of women in executive positions than Obama does. Romney is strong on the military and national defense. Obama is pro-arab, pro-muslim. Obama was the first president in our nation's history to bow to a foreign king and that king was muslim. Romney would have not allowed al-qaeda to storm the Lybian embassy. We had fighter jets posted in Italy that could have reached the American Embassy in Lybia in less than one hour. If those jets had flown over the embassy at mach 1+ the sonic boom would have stopped the protests and al-qaeda from scaling the wall and killing our people. (People can't climb walls with their hands over their ears.) Carter was a milk-toast president. Our embassy personel were held hostage for 444 days. Reagan was not an apologist like Carter (or Obama) and was strong on defense, like Romney. The Iranians released the hostages while Reagan was taking the oath of office. They knew Reagan wouldn't up with that nonsense like Carter did. Al-qaeda wouldn't have killed the embassy people under Romney because Romney would have stopped them and made the attempt very costly. We've tried Obama and he has failed. Romney was a success as the chief executive (governor) of Massachusetts. If Romney is anywhere near as successful as the chief executive of the United States, we will be in great shape in four years. Romney has increased employment at the businesses he started while at Bain Capital. Staples was a one store operation when Romney's firm bought it. Now it is a national chain employing almost 100,000 people. Romney increased employment in Massachusetts. Then with all that, look what Romney did with the Olympics. He took it form emminent failure and cancellation to tremendous success. That was a WOW!

An impressive list of Obama's accomplishments :
1. First President to apply for college aid as a foreign student, then
deny he was a foreigner.
2. First President to have a social security number from a state in which
he had never lived.
3. First President to go on 17 lavish vacations, including date nights and

wife.

at taxpayer expense .
7. First President to repeat the Holy Quran tells us the early morning
call of the Azan (Islamic call to worship) is the most beautiful sound on
earth.
8. First President to violate the War Powers Act. .
9. First President to be held in contempt of court for illegally
obstructing oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.
10. First President to defy a Federal Judge's court order to cease
implementing the Health Care Reform Law.
11. First President to require all Americans to purchase a product from a
third party.
12. First President to spend a trillion dollars on 'shovel-ready' jobs when
there was no such thing as 'shovel-ready' jobs.
13. First President to abrogate bankruptcy law to turn over control of
companies to his union supporters.
14. First President to by-pass Congress and implement the Dream Act through
executive fiat.
15. First President to order a secret amnesty program that stopped the
deportation of illegal immigrants across the U.S. , including those with
criminal convictions.
16. First President to demand a company hand-over $20 billion to one of his
political appointees.
17. First President to terminate America 's ability to put a man in space.
18. First President to have a law signed by an auto-pen without being
present.
19. First President to arbitrarily declare an existing law unconstitutional
and refuse to enforce it!!!!
20. First President to threaten insurance companies if they publicly
spoke-out on the reasons for their rate increases.
21. First President to tell a major manufacturing company in which state it
is allowed to locate a factory.
22. First President to file lawsuits against the states he swore an oath to
protect (AZ, WI, OH, IN).
23. First President to withdraw an existing coal permit that had been
properly issued years ago.
24. First President to fire an inspector general of Ameri -Corps for
catching one of his friends in a corruption case.
25. First President to appoint 45 czars to replace elected officials in his
office.
26. First President to golf 73 separate times in his first two and a half
years in office, 90 to date.
27. First President to hide his medical, educational and travel records.
28. First President to win a Nobel Peace Prize for doing NOTHING to earn it.
29. First President to go on multiple global 'apology tours'.
30. First President to take a 17 day vacation.

Those are some of the reasons I will vote for Romney.

ETA: The fighter jets stationed in Italy are only 480 miles away from the Lybian Embassy. The jets are capable of 1000+ mph. It takes less than 30 minutes to scramble any squadron of jets on alert.

Good luck to you and yours.

Well what do I like about him he took no salary while governor of Massachusetts. I think that is kind of cool though when asked if he would do that again as President he said no comment. Perhaps as a joke, I don't know, thing is though he could have said yes and that would be huge! He didn't and I guess that shows a level of honesty I have never seen in Obama.

He is a businessman, even if you don't agree with how business handles things he does know why businesses do or do not create jobs. He does know why businesses open plants overseas. He is also well aware that is not a tax loophole but a tax burden that keeps over a trillion dollars held by US companies from being repatriated.

The thing I think people fail to realize is without actually becoming a Socialism government cannot force business to do what they want. You can only dangle carrots and have the stick not far behind. When you understand business you can get them to want to do the right thing. You know where they are going to find loopholes (real loopholes and there are a lot of them) and you know when you have a solid law that will effect change.

It is not that Obama is a bad person, or that he is stupid, it is just that he hasn't a clue what he is doing and that is evident in the fact that GDP has been dropping around a half percent every year since he took office. If his policies had even been sort of working we should be a little above the 2% when he took office instead we are around 1%.

Medicare is something I happen to know well because my father has been in the federal plan since he retired. The current federal plan is what the Romney plan wants to implement in the future for Medicare. At his level it was only offered to my dad so my mom was on Medicare. My father's plan offered sooooo much more for sooo much less that my mom had with Medicare. We found that out when we looked into in home care for my mom when she was dying of Alzheimers. Pretty much the government offers him a choice of plans and he picks the one that fits his needs best. Nothing out of pocket, no smoke or mirrors, and it is sustainable.

Yes Romney wants to make it income based so that those that can't pay don't pay and those that can pay a little pay a little and those that are millionaires (real ones not the ones that make 250,000) have to pay for what their insurance cost because they can afford to do so.

My dad is old, he doesn't care about himself, he cares about his kids and his grand kids. My dad says it is safe and I believe him.
_____________________________________________________________
For Amy, Romney's tax plan. 20% rate cut across the board, which means even for the middle class the rates are 20% less than Obama's proposal which is to keep the Bush rates for the middle class.

The second part is a cap on the amount you can be deducted if you itemize. What this means is if you use the standard deduction you get a 20% decrease in the rate you pay, no other changes. He threw out the number of 25,000 cap on deductions which means if you itemize you will be earning more than 100,000 before the cap actually effects you. The average deduction for a single filer making 100,000 is a little over 22,000. Now if you make a million your average deduction is just over 160,000 you are paying more in taxes because you just lost the ability to deduct over 135,000 of your income or an additional 135,000+ just became taxable.

Is there anything else you would like for me to explain cause I don't vote for people unless I fully understand their platform. In return could you explain how the 60 to 80 million that will be brought in by rolling back the Bush rates for "millionaires" will even make a noticeable difference in the trillion dollar deficit he is running?
___________________________________________________________
Oh and lowering the corporate rate to 25% while changing how we tax overseas money will bring that trillion dollars home and put about 10% of it in the governments account. O wow, that is 100 million, see how that works? I mean really, 900 million infused into businesses to hire worker and 100 million to the government, that is a win win!
_________________________________________________________
Amy, my retired father is subject to capital gains so are a lot of the middle class. Sorry but keeping the capital gains tax at 15% isn't about the rich. Plus it is already taxed at the corporate rate so even at 15% the earnings have been taxed at 50%, I think that is more than enough tax on earnings. Go much higher and it isn't worth it to invest anymore which is what Romney is saying.
__________________________________________________________
Kristen W, did you actually look to see who the "experts" are? All ivy league or Cali, (oh sorry I missed Chicago) don't know how to break it to you but they only teach Keynesian economics there so they wouldn't know success in real terms if it bit them on their backside.

Proof is in the pudding, GDP has not improved, it didn't work. Keynes himself admitted the long term it doesn't work. Obama just proved how short term it was.

answers from New York on

Hey Z., I really, really respect intellectual honestly and curiosity. So I give you kudos for simply asking the question.

First - realize that Romeny has no intention of taking away Medicare or Medicaid. His VP, Paul Rayn had proposed *changing* the Medicare arrangement more than 10 years in the future to something - not eliminating it. That disinformation is from a bad commercial or from people who haven't really looked beyond the Democratic talking points which are not accurate. But even if it was true (which it's not) it was Ryan's plan, not Romneys. And it would only impact people under age 55 when they get to Medicare age. I'm 53 so it would impact me more than 10 yrs from now. Instead of having to go on Medicare I would get a voucher (since I live in the NY metro area with higher costs and I've paid higher taxes the amount would be more than if I lived in Oklahoma) and I'd use that to shop for a Medicare plan that would be standardized. My 82 yr old mom wouldn't be affected, neither would my 60 yr old sister. But I would. Remember - it's not even Romney's plan.

I used to vote Democratic all the way down the line. I voted for Clinton and even Gore. But in the last few elections I've tended to vote conservative.
To answer your question - some reasons I'm voting to Romney and not Obama:

1 - Romney has had very great success in many situations of turning things around that were going badly. Financially losing companies, the state of Massachusetts, the internaional Olympics are some examples. Our nation is in deep financial trouble and needs to be turned around.
2 - Romeny has an excellent record of working with Democrats & Republicans and bringing them together to get things done. Think of Bill Clinton in the '90's. He worked with a Repulican house & senate and they together got a lot accomplished. Romeny had done that in Massachusetts and will do the same in Washington.
3 - Romeny realize that America is exceptional - he realizes that we are the greatest single power on earth to help bring about positive change, democracy and freedom. He won't spend the first few months of his presidency traveling aorund the world telling other countries that America has made mistakes. Of course we have, but it's just not appropriate for the leader of the nation to go around the world telling people that we're awful when we're not.
4 - Romney knows how to "play poker". He knows that in international situations you have to hold your cards close to your vest and act in the best interest of the nation. He won't whisper to the Russian president that he'll have more flexibility after his re-election like Obama did.
5 - Romney will do what's best for our country overseas. He'll do a better job of keeping us strong, and will have a much stronger loyalty to our allies. We must have strong relationships with our allies in order to protect our interests and the stability of the world - financially and in terms of safety. We have not been loyal to our allies in the last 4 years.
6 - We need to do more domestically with oil production. We cannot rely on the Middle East, South America & Russia for our energy. Too many of the countries we rely on for oil are not really our friends. We need to become more independent and Romeny understand that and will encourage that through various laws. by producting more of our own oil we will see prices drop too - that will help in the cost of groceries & heating our homes.
7 - Romeny is a good man. He doesn't have past relationships with people who were criminals or domestic terrorists. Obama has had a number of questionable relationships in his adult life and I think that speaks to his judgement.

I think president Obama is probably a really nice guy. He's very intelligent. I was proud to see that our country elected an African American leader. But ultimatley, I think his ideas are not good for us as a nation. He seems far more interested in spreading our wealth out to nations and people who are not friendly to us and to political systems that are ultimately very bad for their people.

I am a very firm believer that we should help those who need help. But there are many nations and groups of people in bad financial situations becuae their political & economic systems are flawed. In the Middle East half of their population (women) have no right or their rights are far suburdinate to mens' - so half of their popluation can't contribute to their nation's economy & stability. The women need help but the political systems should not be aided by the US. Similarly, certain African nations are waging tribal wars and ethnic cleansing that result in huge losses of life, and civil rights violations that are horrendous (ethnic rapes of entire villages of women & children to produce offspring of the invaders). We should not be supoprting those political systems although the people need our help. We need a leader who recongizes that some governments do not need our encouragement although their people do. Our president must have intenational sopistication to realize the difference - Romeny has it, I don't think Obama does.

The USA is a great nation, founded on amazing principles. We must have a leader who is practical, who recognizes that "the people" are the essence on this nation and the government is not. We were endowed with our freedoms by "out creator" not by our government.

I hope you find good answers, helpful information and respectful responses to your questions and I congratulate you for asking it.

PS as for Romeny wanting to wage war and being responsible for killing thousands of people - hundreds of thousand of people have bee murdred by their own governemtns in Syria, Libya & other nations in the alst year alone - tha twe knew about and did nothing to help. Sometimes as the most powerful nation in the world we have a respsonsibility to stop evil if we know about it. That's what we teach our kids at school with all the anti-bullying programs. War is usually not the soluation - there are dozens of ways to help people who want to do the right thing and stop bloodshed. i think Romeny has the sophistication to get that done while I think Obama doesn't have that level of internaional know-how.

Note to Amy J. regarding the Medicare cut. Healthcare Reforms includes a 2% CUT in physician reimbursement beginning 1/1/2013. (I work int his industry and I negotiatie with physicians' offices frequently). The Meciare shcedule of reimbursement has never been CUT - it's been frozen but never cut. The cut is dseigned to help fund Healthcare Reform. The pracitcal impact as that many physicians are stoppping taking new patients. So it actually is true.

I will follow this question for sure. Most Romney supporters, IMO, just don't like Obama and Romney is the only option.
Most that support Romney only bash Obama, they don't really tout anything Romney stands for, they just speak negatively about Obama. You can find proof enough of that on this forum alone.
It's always "Obama did this" "Obama hasn't done that", but there isn't any "Romney will ___" .
This is all my opinion. Take it for that and that alone.
Romney, IMO hasn't really presented any zingers that will change the face of America, IMO.
I'm not bashing either candidate, just my opinion.

Romney knows business inside and out. I truly believe he can (with proper cooperation from Congress) do what needs to be done to get our economy moving again.

Medicare and Social Security are both on the verge of collapse. This isn't necessarily anyone's fault, so much as it is the result of not enough input and too much output. People are living longer, thus creating more strain on the programs. Combine that with the "baby boomer" generation beginning to retire, and you've got a hot mess on your hands.

Romney's plan for Medicare has no effect on people currently on the plan or people near retirement. Admittedly, I don't know what qualifies as "near." From what I understand, he wants to make it more of a "voucher" system where people are given a set amount and can use it to pay for whatever insurance they decide is best for them. Part of this plan includes requiring all insurance plans to offer coverage that is comparable to current Medicare coverage.

Regarding "supporting the war," we will only continue to be there for as long as the Afghan government want us there (similar to the prior situation with Iraq). We have a current agreement to stay until XX date. If they decide they want us there longer, we will have to sign a new agreement. That being said, my husband is there right now. From what he has told me of his experiences, they will NOT ask us to extend our presence there.

I am voting for Romney in large part because, although I think both candidates lie & greatly overpromise what they can/will do, and although I'd like to think both have the best intentions, the big issues for me are pro-life, family values, reducing debt & the government's meddling in our lives. Neither would be my ideal candidate, as I am very conservative, but Obama is just too extreme for me on too many issues.

And, like the 1st poster said, someone please tell me what exactly he has done to make our country better? I don't see it. I just cannot support someone who has such extreme beliefs (in my opinion) on not protecting our own species - look at his track record for what he has voted for in terms of partial birth abortions, killing those babies born alive, etc. It's disgusting to me. To me the basic human right to life supersedes all other rights. The last part of Obama's statement on the (last?) debate irritated me, although I get that he probably meant it differently than I took it. But I do not believe in what it seemed he was touting in terms of equality. Why should those who have less desire to work get the same opportunities as those who work their butts off? Just an example, but seriously, life is not fair, it's ridiculous to think that it should be. And this is coming from someone (me) who doesn't want to work that hard, lol. I just want to work enough to get by, support my own family, etc. Other than that I want to enjoy life! ;-) Getting off on a tangent, and probably don't make much sense now.

I get that it can take awhile to gain traction turning an entire country around, but still. IMO, although Romney gets bashed for being rich, I don't understand what is wrong with having a president who knows how to run a successful business - I would think that would be a great asset! Wouldn't that help us turn things around debt-wise, get rid of the waste, etc.? IDK. I think we have a better chance with Romney, although it is pretty frustrating knowing that it is a function of the entire government, not just who the president is...makes me wonder how much change either of them would produce after 4 or 8 years.

I'll be interested in seeing other responses as well, hopefully everyone can keep it civilized! ;-)

Here is my take on the issue and how I have come to the decision to vote for Romney. I have had to look at both candidates through a Bibical lense to see which one is more aligned with my Christian beliefs.
Obama wants to redistribute the wealth, Romney wants to create jobs to create wealth and has a proven record on how to do that. Genesis 47 shows how redistributing wealth worked for Pharaoh and his people before God stepped in to rescue them from slavery.
1Timothy 6:10 raises concerns about out of control spending and high debt. It has been reported that the First Family has spent a whopping 1.4 BILLION dollars for their own use during the last four years. Really? With the state of our economy being nearly as bad as the Great Depression must they live THAT lavishly on taxpayer dollars? Couldn't some of that money gone to the national debt?? As others have stated, Romney didn't even take a salary as Governor. I couldn't give a flying flip about Romney's personal wealth. IT'S HIS HARD-EARNED MONEY, NOT MINE!! More power to him for earning the big bucks. It shows me that he knows how to earn and keep wealth and put our country on the right track with those skills.
Zechariah 12 gives a harsh warning for anyone that ignores or rebuffs God's chosen land, Israel. Obama has visited that nation ZERO times during his presidency and it is clear that he and Netanyahu have a strained relationship choosing to go to The View instead of meeting with him in New York, for example. Romney has repeated again and again that Israel is our most trusted ally in the Middle East and we will not turn our backs on them. It has been said that he and Netanyahu have been good friends for years.
Prov.12:22 refers to dishonesty and lying. The whole Benghazi issue really upsets me. I have a brother in the military that LOVES his job despite the risks and has been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan as well as other dangerous parts of the world. Watching all of this unfold with what happened in Benghazi and the sheer lack of security really concerns me that this administration isn't protecting our own as they should be. I realize that accidents happen and lives will be lost, but for heaven's sake the American people need to know what happened, whether it was a breakdown in communication, ineffective leadership or whatever, own your part as a leader, Mr. President or you won't get to be the leader anymore!!! Sure we don't know how Romney would have reacted in a similar situation because he hasn't been President, but this is a prime example for Obama to show what kind of leader he is and frankly, he has dropped the ball in the worst way, IMO.
Isaiah 9:6 God wants us to be a free people able to self-govern. Government is not put in place to control people and force laws upon them.
I think Obamacare is a flawed law. Of course there needs to be quality, affordable healthcare for all, but this law isn't it. I fear people won't realize it until it is too late. Just the other day I was at my physical therapist's office and the receptionist (who files all the insurance claims and such) said they are already feeling the impact of this law and it hasn't even gone into full effect yet. She said already people were being denied some services because it will be considered elective. I don't know what I would have done with out my P/T in the last year or so if my services were denied! This health coverage is going to create more expense and tax than people realize and we won't be able to get services we are used to!
Finally, I am pro-life. Obama's stance on partial birth abortion disgusts me. I cannot vote for someone that contradicts so many issues that I believe in. That is why Romney gets my vote. I believe he will uphold our values and constitution that this country is based on. Obama's connections with questionable people that Cheryl O. pointed out scares me and I have wondered more than once if my kids will grow up in a Socialist or communist society instead of a Republic I have grown up in. I have to think of their future first and foremost. By the way, I have voted Democrat in every election since1992 when I was old enough to vote, except for this year. I just think the Republican choice is the best one this time around. Good luck with your decision.
HTH,
A.

I will be voting for Governor Romney because President Obama has had 4 years to fulfill his promises and has yet to do so. From what I have read and heard, he doesn't really have any new ideas, just asking for the opportunity to continue what he "started"... which is nothing...

Why? He's a successful businessman. He is rich, so what! That tells me that he knows how to manage money, not that he's greedy and/or overpaid.

President Obama is an attorney and former city planner. OK- how did those experiences help reshape our economy? They didn't. Time to give someone else a shot.

I have yet to hear a Romney supporter spell out his great policies or abstain from Obama hating, so I'll be following this thread! I got almost no clear answers on my "What exactly is their idea for Medicare?" question (aside from misinformation that Obama took money from the elderly to give to Obamacare which is untrue). Meanwhile threads usually easily get limitless Obama bashing answers.

Now that people pick their own news sources, you've got the people that pick the "Obama has done nothing in four years and has put our nation in the socialist crapper" people vs. the "Obama has accomplished a lot and we're slowly recovering from a massive down-slide" people. It all depends on what people are watching and reading. The former bunch want Obama out and seem to have settled for Romney.

I'm not a fan of Romney's elitist character (I think he meant what he said about the 47% because he's always acting that way) or policies for the military (from what I can sort of vaguely gather from his insults of Obama) or his womens policies (for CERTAIN) and he's so shamelessly saying "whatever it takes" right now, it's like he needs a big long nose super-imposed on his face and knows his base doesn't read fact checks following debates. I also do not care for Ryan.

Anyway, hoping you get clear answers, I'll be reading!

****If I had Romney's net worth I'd be working for free too. If he's so charitable, why does he need bigger capital gains tax breaks? And why won't he release more returns?

I voted for Obama last time and I must ask you what has Obama done in the last 4 years. He is great at talking but I don't see the what he has done for the country! Unemployment is high, 23 MILLION + people out of work, gave money to "green companies" that have gone out of business, national debt has triple, I no longer support him. I think that he has lied about to many things, Obama care is not what is cracked up to be. Our family life has not improved over the last four years, but has gotten worst, we are being taxed to death. We are the working middle class being slammed to the wall. Look at his campaign speech from the last election what has he done???????

I like to think that each of us has some kind of issue that their is absolutely no compromising and it is an absolute deal breaker when it comes to choosing a candidate. I will tell you that mine is whether a candidate is pro-life or pro-choice. Even if I knew nothing else about either candidate, that one issue is the deal breaker for me. My conscious tells me I must always vote for a pro-life candidate, therefore, Romney/Ryan are my choice for 2012.

__________________________________________________________
I can appreciate your point Z., definitely not here to engage in political debates. I just tried to honestly answer your question about why I personally would be voting for Romney. Again, the pro-life/pro-choice argument is my deal breaker. Each of us has to vote based on many individual reasons and thoughts, that is just mine.

WHY are you voting for Romney? Lets see people sing his praises, not bemoan the current President.

I am voting for Romney because he is supporting a small business which will infact support my FIL's small farm, the business I work for, and ultimately my small family formed town.

I am voting for Romney because it is proven in his work that he can build us up again. Yes some heads always need to be stepped on to get to the top.

I am voting for Romney because he has proven he will stick up for our country, and not let others walk on us.

I am voting for Romney because he is not going to make it easier for people not of this country to get benifits I cannot even though I am not financially stable.

I am voting for Romney because I have seen the past and I feel we are to learn from our mistakes. Obama has not worked on what he said he would, he has lied to our country. Romney not be perfect but right now I am just voting for better then what we have.

And as for Romney taking away Medicare... Hasn't Obama already crushed the young mans dreams of ever getting it with his Obama care act?

You asked my reasons, I gave you them

O and Romney is not wanting to take away our womans rights(birth control issue) he just wants to make them equil to every other person. Why should we get it free when I have to pay for every other perscription. Its not that expensive anyways. Mine was like $35 without any insurance.

I will think of more. I have a long shift at work yet ;P

Just look at what Obama has done in leading our country toward socialism and that made my decision even if I didn't like and agree with most of what Romney is saying, and I do agree with most of what Romney is saying. Obama himself would make up my mind to vote for Romney. If you saw 2016 that would make me sure to not vote for Obama. So the decision would be made.

I will vote for Romney.

I did not vote for Obama in 2008 because I thought he was untried and new to the political arena to take on the responsibility of President. I have closely watched and listened in the past 4 years, and still believe that Obama is "too new" for this job.

Romney, eh, I have not liked a Republican candidate in years. I really haven't like any candidates in years. However, I believe that a successful business owner who will bring that for profit view to government will be a good thing. Our country needs to be run like a business - with a close eye to the bottom line and a "boss" willing to cut the chaff where needed to ensure a healthy bottom line.

I agree with maintaining our military.
I agree with repealing Obamacare and letting the states run their Medicare programs.
I like what he has said about taxes and would like to see where he takes that.
I like the inclusiveness of his foreign policy but also his willingness to take a stand when needed.

Does he have a plan that is written in stone? Of course not, no one vying for a new job enters into it with a hard and fast plan. They enter into it with ideas and guidelines and, in this case, a feeling for what the clients want (yes, we are the clients). I prefer that he has not made a gazillion promises, rather outlined what he thinks are the best ways to pull our economy up and out of the quagmire that we have been sunk into.

Realize, that it does not matter what any candidate promises - unless they pull Executive rights (which Obama has done one too many times to please me) every change must be approved by Congress. I think that Romney, and Ryan, have the bi-partisan experience to actually help our Congressmen work together enabling change in our country.

Democrats give heavily to social programs
Republicans scale back

This is an ebb and flow in government that has been going on for years. I think it has been a glory ride for Democrats' policy the past 4 years and we need Republicans to reign some of the spending in for awhile. Which is why the House went Republican in the last rounds of Representative votes - citizens realized a better balance was needed in DC.

Thank you for the thought provoking question. It has been interesting reading the responses.

What is going to happen to the elderly under Obamacare? They will be deemed hopeless by un unelected panel that doesn't want to sink $$ into people will just die in a few years anyway- Obamacare is socialized healthcare, plain and simple. It is the survival of the fittest and the feeble, weak and old will not survive it.

Romney is going to cut taxes so we can take our money, and go out and spend- you know, stimulate the economy. My parents are in the dreaded $250,000 plus tax bracket- and you know what? They deserve to keep their money. They have paid their dues, they went to school, worked their way up the corporate ladder and they are now, finally reaping the benefits. Under Obama, they will pay $40,000 more in taxes per year. The so-called "rich" are the ones out there spending money. They are the ones that can afford to go out to dinner, purchase new vehicles and go on vacation. If you take away their money, they won't be spending and jobs will start to disappear. Its common sense. Obama is trying to bankrupt our country.

In light of the recent situation with Benghazi, and especially after the release of the emails sent to the White House, I cannot fathom why anyone in good conscience could vote for Obama. The emails are written proof that the White House was well aware of what was happening- AS it was happening. They did nothing. Absolutely nothing as those poor men were tortured, sodomized and murdered. Then they covered it up. Why would anyone want this man leading our country for another four miserable years?!

Obama wants to disarm our military. How do we benefit by being defenseless from our enemies (and obviously, we have A LOT of them)? Romney doesn't want the war to continue indefinitely- he wants to protect the men that we already have in place and send back up if necessary. As Romney said during one of the debates- why on earth would we announce a specific date and time that we would be pulling all troops (paraphrasing)? Do we want mass chaos and riots to break out?

I live in Ohio- obviously a very important swing state. All day long, all I see/hear are awful mudslinging ads from the Obama camp- this is both on tv and radio. His ads are just downright lies. He does not have a record to run on, so he spews lies and attacks Romney.

Morally and religiously, I support Romney. Obama is the furthest thing from a Christian that I have ever seen- it is a total sham to say that he is one. I have huge moral objections to many of the issues that Obama supports, including abortion and same sex marriage. At the democratic national convention, God was not only denounced, but he was booed. The Lord that I believe in does not take this lightly.

I realize that a lot of what I've written is more about why I don't support Obama than why I do support Romney. But in reality, I am scared sh*tless for our country and for my children if Obama stays in office. I feel that our country is at a crossroads. If Obama stays in office, we will continue on our downward spiral and we may never recover. This election is our opportunity to begin the process of getting our country back on track.

You got some pretty lengthy answers. I will try hard to keep my short.

Romney is a very successful businessman..that is what our country needs at this time in history. He has a much higher level of experience due to his business history and being a governor. Obama is not a bad man...just a poor leader due to inexperience. Romney has more business and leadership experience now than Obama had in 2008.

I like his choice of V.P. because Paul Ryan is an economy whiz. This was a very smart choice on Romney's part. Shows how his mind works...it is about the economy.

I like that Romney talks about how our country can do better and we don't need to settle for the miserable economy and policies of Obama. We can do better..it is attainable..and won't get better with more of the same policies of Obama.

I like that Romney is pro life and keeping the definition of marriage as a union between one man and one woman. I love hearing stories of his marriage and family life. He is a man that has struggled with these two issues as we all do.

I don't believe for one minute that Romney is going to take away Medicare..a President does not have that kind of power. He just knows that Medicare is heading for bankruptcy and wants to solve the problem by looking at it from different angles. Romney has seen businesses broken and has thought outside of the box to get the businesses up and running and thriving. We need that kind of mind in our White House. Does it involve firing people some time? Heck yes! Does it mean letting businesses go bankrupt sometimes? Heck Yes!

There are many more reasons I am voting for him but I told you I'd try to keep it short. I am also voting for some Democrats. My strategic plan is to vote everyone out and start new. Get new blood in Washington that will hopefully work better together for the needs of our nation...all members of our nation..not just the rich..or the poor..but everyone.

Good luck and best wishes at getting the info you need to vote your conscience!!

answers from Chicago on

My major reasons for (reluctantly) voting for Romney are:

1) Governor Romney has a full and complete understanding of the complexities of our economy both on a macro and mico level. He has worked in the private sector for most of his life, and had the burden of making payroll, and turning a profit. President Obama, however, has never held a job in a for-profit organization. His "community organizer" credentials prior to entering law school and his "Constitutional Law professor" jobs did not prepare him for understanding the business cycle. This shows so clearly in his inability to adopt policies that will encourage, rather than hurt, job growth.

Many people in my family are small business owners, and they are having such a tough time. Case in point: My aunt and uncle own a medium-sized stock brokerage firm in the Twin Cities. They have always been very fiscally conservative and responsible with regards to their business and the types of investments they allow their brokers to make/encourage for their clients. They steered clear of so much of the trouble that Wall Street got into over the past 16 years. Yet, because of the new Dodd-Frank financial regulations, they have had to hire 2 additional attorneys whose SOLE purpose is in making sure the company is in compliance with Dodd-Frank. For a company like theirs who didn't partake in the orgy of greed, this is such a waste of their resources. Their company specializes in raising capital for new start-ups, so if they have to hire 2 attorneys (each making over $100k/yr), that is $200k less they have to offer to small businesses who would like to get off the ground.

2) No where in Romney's proposals is there any language that will take away Medicare. That simply isn't the case. What he would like to do is to allow seniors to choose to either a) Stay with Medicare, or b) use the funds that would have been spent for Medicare to choose their own PRIVATE insurance plan. They have a choice.

If you'd like a balanced perspective of the proposed changes, please check out the article: "Democrats versus Republicans: Two Different Approaches to Medicare," at http://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2012/10/democrats-republicans... . The article has a bit of industry-specific language, but if you bear with it you should be able to get the gist of it.

My husband is a physician, so we both do a ton of reading of various aspects of healthcare reform and cost control. What I can tell you is that there WILL be a rationing system in place with the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare.) It won't be based on luck of the draw, but on a panel of government appointed physicians and public health policy makers' opinions on who should receive certain expensive procedures, and who should not. This isn't just some idea that the GOP is pulling out of thin air, and if you read former Senator Tom Daschle's book, "Crisis," (remember Tom Daschle--he was President Obama's original selection for the head of Health and Human Services, before his tax problems led him to bow out), you will see what I mean. He lays out the rationing/"death panels" system in plain language.

3) I am not in favor of EITHER candidates' foreign policy. Despite what his premature Nobel Peace Prize would suggest, President Obama is by no means a dove--he is willing to use military power, when it suits him and his objectives. I think he and Gov Romney are 2 sides of the same coin on foreign policy, which made watching the foreign policy debate so painful for me.

Good luck to you as you make this decision. If you are a Christian, I'd highly encourage you to pray about your discernment. If you are not, then I'll wish you even more luck ;-)

ETA: You might want to watch this video called "The Determinators," which is about the panels. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5ju8IgaiGk I have NOT watched it yet, so I can't vouch for its credibility, but some people whose opinions I do highly value sent it to me this morning. Just thought I'd share it.

I do not vote for people I "like". I don't know either candidate personally. I vote based on the facts and the candidate that best represents my values. I do not expect any candidate to fully represent my values, so I choose the closest fit.

Based on your question and your comment in "So What Happened", it sounds like you need to clarify both the facts and your values. When you do this, you will find your candidate.

First the facts - Romney does not support eliminating Medicare, as you suggest. Here is a direct quote from his website as it relates to medicare: "Nothing changes for current seniors or those nearing retirement" (http://www.mittromney.com/issues/medicare).

Second your values - You need to clarify your view on war. Personally, I do not like war, but I believe wars can be necessary and just. And I do believe a country is justified in going to war with a people group that has in the past and continues to attack its civilians and military - 9/11, Christmas Day bomber, Times Square comb, ect... And I want a leader that will fight to protect this country.

Medicare is in danger no matter who's in office next just because of shifting demographics. There are fewer young people these days paying into medicare and social security. Maybe if those 50+ million children weren't aborted over the past 40 yrs, we wouldn't have to worry so much....

This is from http://factcheck.org/2012/08/a-campaign-full-of-mediscare/ :

These boasts about saving Medicare are simply opinion. Each side says it has the right plan, while the other side is going about it all wrong — though voters would be hard-pressed to figure out what exactly those plans are from campaign ads and stump speeches.

The Obama approach is to stay with government-provided traditional Medicare while putting pressure on health care providers to deliver care more efficiently, and instituting new payment models and coordination of care to cut costs. The Romney-Ryan plan turns to competition among insurance companies to lower costs and premium-support payments to induce seniors to pick their health plans based on price.

The commonality for the campaigns is: “We promised too much in Medicare; we need to reduce costs,” says Walker. “What’s the best way to do that?”

“It really is, which way do you think you have a better shot,” Wilenksy says. And, she says, it’s a good debate to have.

So far, though, we’re not having that debate on the campaign trail. “It’s very interesting trying to get any credible information with all the smoke being blown,” Wilensky says, “which is too bad because these are very serious issues.”

I'm not supporting Romney, so maybe I shouldn't be answering this. But here goes.

As far as Medicare goes, the two sides are proposing wildly different ideas on how to fix it. But, even Romney/Ryan aren't going to change it for those currently receiving it. They will wait for the next generation of folks. The voucher system (which identifies a set amount of benefit above which seniors must pay on their own) they R/R are proposing wouldn't be applied until those currently 54 yo or younger would be eligible.

As for the economy: Obama's stimulus worked.

http://www.igmchicago.org/igm-economic-experts-panel/poll...

There is a lot of evidence to support this and virtually none to disclaim it. The complaints you hear are people saying full recovery is not happening fast enough. But the stimulus package requested by the Obama administration was cut down a bit by Congress, so the expected benefits were not as big or as fast as desired. Even if the stimulus package passed was exactly what the Obama administration wanted, it's unlikely we would have fully recovered yet. Why? Because the economic hole we were in was so wide and so deep that it's going to take a long time to fill it in. Obama has done a good job at getting that started. But it's going to take more than four years. Do you remember the economic freefall that was happening when he took office? I do. It was stopped, corrected, and we've been heading in the right direction for the last couple of years. The complaints you hear are people saying it's not happening fast enough. Well, this was the biggest economic downturn since the Great Depression, so we should expect that it's the longest recovery time since the Great Depression, as well. People seem to have really, really short memories.

Romney's claims about being able to create jobs and "save" the economy are bogus/exaggerated. His claims of 12 million jobs in 4 years are taken from several different studies (some simply blog sites) that have analyzed different parts of his rather vague policies, and some that didn't even look at the actual policies he put forth.

http://www.columbian.com/news/2012/oct/20/romneys-job-cre...

Many of the studies use longer timelines (the 4 years claimed by Romney is actually 10 years in one review), some use different policy bases, and most are jobs gained that would already happen under the current policies. History has shown us, time and time again, that trickle-down economics doesn't work. Giving tax breaks to the rich does not suddenly result in economic gains for the poor and middle class.

As a matter of fact, trickle-down tends to result in greater wealth disparity. The US has one of the highest wealth disparities in the developed world. And new research shows that wealth and income disparities are a major factor in suppressing economic growth.

http://www.economics.neu.edu/papers/documents/03-006.pdf

http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/fandd/2011/09/Berg.htm

Good luck in your choice. I believe that for the immediate and, more importantly, long-term prosperity of our country, Obama is the best choice.

Z., when you read these LONG posts with copied and pasted lists, you should know that they've been written here before by the same people, others have pointed them to sources showing them that their facts are just out and out wrong, and these posters don't care what is true and what isn't. They just continue to regurgitate the same stuff over and over.

Just remember that the banks lost billions and billions of OUR DOLLARS by throwing prudence to the wind and gambling with our money. That's when we had a republican in the White House. These same people who are giving you all this bullcrap here act like President Obama should have been able to wave a magic wand and fix all of this that was blown up before he arrived on the scene. Their assertions are ridiculous, especially considering that everything he tried to do was voted against, even when some things were originally republican ideas.

Quite frankly, those posters whose families make a lot of money will probably benefit from Romney being elected, in the short run, on the backs of all the ones who don't make a lot of money. It is interesting to me to see the people here who make less than $100,000 a year say that Romney would be favorable to them. They're wrong, but they won't figure it out for a while. And when the medicare voucher system is in place, yes, our seniors will definitely be suffering.

Perhaps the America we don't recognize will be the one where the have-a-lots have a lot more and the regular middle class Americans will have a lot less. I guess saying that the joke is on them for not realizing that they are selling themselves out by voting for Romney is not a nice thing to think, but I sure do think it.

I think you should check all the claims people have made here - check things out. Don't believe everything a candidate says because that doesn't make it true. Same with the websites. Make sure the person you vote for has been consistent and that you check those positions with independent fact-checking sites, the CBO, etc. There are some pretty absurd statements in between the real facts! For example, the money people say came out of Medicare under Obamacare didn't come from benefits, and it was such a good idea that Paul Ryan put it in his own budget. So what's the difference between candidates on that issue! And research things like voucher programs, Medicare as delivered by individual states, and other things that people have recommended here! Business support? Ask the people who've actually been in the companies taken over by Bain, see how many jobs were lost vs. those saved, etc.

I am voting for Obama because I am better off than I was 4 years ago!! Our country is not in the deep recession that it could have been in had Obama not become President. I received more on my tax return. We are in the $150,000 salary range. Obama has ended the war in Iraq and has brought out soldiers home. He killed Bin Laden and will end the war in Afghanistan by 2014 so we can keep more money here at home. I have many neighbors who have kept their kids on their insurance because of Obamacare. I could go on and on but I definitely don't want to go back to the failed Bush policies that got us into the mess in the first place. That is what we will get with Romney!!
