PMS Making Me Feel CRAZY!!

Is PMS worse after having children? Or, is it that I now need to deal with irrational children and feel even more crazy? I have noticed that every month before my period I'm very easily angered and my patience is nill. I'm feeling terribly guilty because I've been awful with my 3.5 y.o. (yelling and completely impatient) the past couple days and I just looked at the calendar and realized it's time for my period. I'm also breast feeding my 1.5 y.o. and don't want to go on the pill for hormones, but I'm wondering if it might be necessary to balance me out? I've seen some herbal remedies for PMS, but I don't know if they're safe while breast feeding, or if they even work. Also, after the emotional stuff subsides, I usually have pretty intense cramps and heavy flow for 2-3 days, then spotting for another 4-5 days. Seems like a really long and difficult period! I've always had cramps, but not such a long period or quite as heavy and painful. Does anyone have any advise or experneice to share?
Thank you!!

1) diet
2) exercise

I was where you were over a year ago. Diet got me through (nettle tea and cod liver oil were the main supplements) and exercise made it even better. I could elaborate if you asked, but will keep it simple for now.

Good Luck!

Try taking vitamin B6 in 50 mg or higher doses (don't go higher than about 150 mg, though). This really helps with mood swings and also with any cramps you may get before the period starts... I also had bad PMS and used to have cramps for about 10 days before my period started and vitamin B6 cut it all in half. I've heard that Evening Primrose is good, too.

Hi A.,

I'm so glad I read your request about the hormonal imbalance you seem to be experiencing.

I have worked with many women with imbalances that effect each one differently. I represent a Research, Development Company within the Nutritional Industry . There is a specific product I would recommend to you that is completely food based. It may be the answer to your hormonal issues. Myself as well as many others have found relief from the irritating results of endocrine system (glandular) imbalance.

This does not contain synthetic or natural hormones but supports the body's ability to produce the correct hormonal levels for every individual in a natural way. It is also 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

E-mail me or call and I will give you more information if interested. I know you won't be sorry you did.

I hear your madness. I use "Equiguest" cream, I buy it from the "Safeway" health department. I just love it. All the pills, teas and etc. you have to take every day. You apply the cream when you need it. I'm trying to use it only when I feel highly irritated or as I like to say "before I feel like killing someone". I love the cream, I told all my friends about it and they love it too. I'm not sure about the safe while breastfeeding and I never google it for side effects. The cream is so good I just don't want to know anything else about it. Try it!

Phew, glad I'm not the only one! After my 2nd child was born, I had the Mirena installed.....LOVED IT! My periods faded away to nothing, as did the PMS crankiness and all other symptoms. I have nothing but great things to say about the Mirena! I had it removed after a year because we are trying for #3, and boy do I miss it! I have noticed that my PMS is really bad, but I'm not sure if it's worse than before my children were born, or if it's just the added stress of a clingy toddler and very independent preschooler!

Hi A.,

There are several things that can help you get balance after having babies.

~Acupuncture
~Earth Mama Angel Baby has a great Monthly Comfort Tea
~Switch to cloth menstrual pads, I recommend Fresh Moon (the chemicals mess up your pH balance and cause extreme cramping and discomfort since your body is more "open" now)
~Exercise - it's as great stress relieve and helps everything flow better and releases endorphines to make you feel better

I hope you find something that helps! These made a huge difference for me and the changes were immediately noticed in my next cycle!

After my last child, I had a tubal. It seemed to me like my PMS and cramping with my periods were worse. I was told many times that it was because I was on the pill before I got pregnant and it was normal. Don't let doctors try to tell you this. Push to make sure there is nothing else wrong. It could be a fibroid or many other things. You shouldn't have to deal with the symptoms of PMS any more than you have to.

You probably have a vitamin deficiency. I would take more B vitamins if I were you, and make sure you are getting enough rest. I am the champion of cranky - and a lot of it was diet (lay off the sugar) and vitamin deficiency.

My PMS changed with each pregnancy. What I have done was sought the help of my OB. She put me on some meds and everything has been great! Good luck!

Funny - I was just wondering this. Actually I'm not sure if it's actually worse or is it just the toddler stage that tends to be trying in the first place so therefore you are way more pissed off when things don't flow normally.

Hi A.,
I am an acupuncturist, and would definetly recommend that. Acupuncture can really help with PMS, I have used it for patients and have had it for myself. It really does work. Plus you get an hour of relaxation and just you time.

Hi A.,

I'm sorry that you feel so overwhelmed by your PMS and periods. My two cents worth is that artificial hormones are EXTREMELY bad for you and should be avoided like the plague. I would always try naturopathic remedies first before considering taking a drug. There are lots of herbs out there that help PMS symptoms and I highly recommend seeing a naturopath. A copper IUD is a wonderful form of birth control and no hormones. Personally I prefer the calendar and discharge method. I keep track of when I ovulate and when I menstruate and it is pretty regular so I know when I am going to ovulate. But back to the PMS symptoms, try the acupuncture and there are teas in the store that are for PMS, relaxation exercises, and don't beat yourself up if you grump at someone. Everyone does it, and just love them that much more when you realize you are doing it. good luck and good health to you. :)

Oh my gosh! I feel your pain..kinda! Lol...I've noticed that a few days before my period I have major PMS! Especially since my daughter was born. Also, I never used to get cramps but I have the last few months. The best advice I can give you is...RELAX!! Take a bath completely by yourself. Read a book for awhile, take a walk (supposedly helps with cramps too...). Do whatever will help you relax for awhile. Before I got pregnant I'd get a little edgy but mostly feel like I was going to cry all the time, now it's the complete opposite. I have zero patient, the smallest, stupidest thing will piss me off. Hang in there momma! You're definetly not alone!

yes it's normal and yes it sucks! at least you figured it out. i was oblivious as to why i wanted to scratch my husband's eyes out wanted some time in bed so that made me worry. now i pay attention to my cycle. it has helped some to know WHY it's happening but it hasn't gotten any better.

i also have heavy bleeding and more cramping than i used to. and my period is longer with off and spotting for up to 10 days. it seems i barely have any time during the month where i'm not PMS'ing or bleeding :(

i hate being on bcp (makes me sick) so i haven't gone that route yet. i am hoping that by clearing up my constant headache (cause undetermined-sinus, migraine?) and my anemia (from all the blood loss), that i will be tolerable again.

oh also i have hypothyroidism so i am always tired.

anyway, what i'm trying to say is that if you have any other problems going on, PMS is worse so see if you can't fix other stuff too.

I used to have PMS and periods like yours, and I found something that worked really well for me: B-complex and a protein shake every day. It's simple, it's natural, it's fine for breastfeeding, it works quickly and I still have that as part of my daily program. I use a really high quality supplement with all the B's and an excellent protein powder in a smoothie or just mixed with orange juice. It gave me periods of only 3 days, NO cramping, and NO PMS. Amazing....our bodies can do wonders if we just give them the raw materials they need to work properly! If you want more details, feel free to email me. I've also shared this with my friends and they've gotten the same results, so I know it's not just me!

Ever since I got off the pill I have been the same way! I think our bodies get so used to being controlled through our birth control that it just takes a while to learn to regulate itself once the pills are gone.
