Are you talking about a trailer? If so...where in the ceiling would they be? There is really no crawl space up there. Have you seen rats? If not...maybe that's why they haven't taken the bait. There are none. On the roof of a trailer you can hear every little noise....every acorn that falls..every drop of rain. We used to visit my FIL in Carolina...out in the woods...always like listening to the rain. Good Luck

Yikes. I would go insane. I'd have an actual pro come out and set up some traps conducive to that particular living environment. They will want to stay thru the winter to be out of the cold, so get on it asap!
Maybe stuff a good mousing cat up there for a night of folly?
This makes my spine tingle!
I agree that the regular spring loaded rat traps are the better way to go. Wear gloves while you bait them with peanut butter, if they smell "human scent" they may shy away from the traps. Eww, and dont forget to go unload them promplty or you'll have deat rat smell permiating your home. YOWZER!!

Don't use poison...they could die anywhere around your house and then you may not find the body until its decomposed a bit and probably smelly. I learned that the hard way.
Use rat traps.
Or call an exterminator.

My son is facinated with Billy the Exterminator (tv show) and I recently had to endure a show where Billy took care of some rats in a bank. He put the wooden trap down first....but it wasn't loaded or had any bait on it....so the rat would get used to seeing it. Then a day or two later, put the trap down, put food on it again but the trap was not set...rat ate the food. Third day...put food down and set the trap and bahm...dead rat. I think he used beef jerky for the bait. Sorry that is my only words of wisdon.

Hi J.~
If this was happening to me, I'd call the professionals! Here's Orkin's site:

I generally like to save $ by doing things myself, but in your situation (wildlife such as rats!) , I think I'd at least be calling the pros to see how much it would cost for THEM to remove the rats from your home.I would think they would have a much better idea as to just how many there actually are up there!
Good luck with this! My neighbors had a family of racoons hangning out in their attic a few years ago. They chewed at things but didn't get into the area where they lived. They called some guy who removed the raccoons by setting up cages and he drove them to the forest preserves.

They are smart boogers...eww..Sorry but make sure to buy the old fashioned wooden ones and use bait. also get ones where the bait is on the inside of the trap and they have to crawl in there the trap door shuts behind them....Since you are dealing with these nasty things I would recommend you contact an exterminator...rats bite

Rat traps are the best way to go. A little peanut butter on some bread and you'll catch your rat. Just keep in mind that if you don't close the holes they will keep coming back. But you can do that yourself - stuff any holes with steel wool.
BTW - all a pro will do is put down the rat traps and poison himself. I live with woods in my backyard and we get small mice every couple of years and the pros said that they can do the traps and poison (that's how they do it) and will chage us for it.

We have a field in front of our house and we ended up getting about 5 of the little turds in our house. It was by no means cute and im with you, they grossed me out. We went all crocodile hunter on them and trapped and killed them (not nicely ) and we got 4 of the 5. They were coming in from behind the dishwasher and we had to move it a sheetrock the hole. I would throw the poison up there because it takes a bit but they will eat it and patch the hole. We put peanut butter and honey on the snap traps and it worked. Its awful I know. Good luck!
