We highly recommend the Signing Time video's too!! (www.singingtime.com) My daughter had a signing "vocabulary" of around 40 signs by the time she was 16 months. She had Baby Einstein videos too - but would ASK for the signing time video - by signing the beginning of the song "Signing time with Alex and Leah."

Every child is different, and unlike the previous poster - we don't have any problem with her vocalizing the words that she's signing (Milk, More, Please, etc.) she still does both! She's 21 months now, and talks like a 3 year old - using complete sentences - questions etc. Signing is very helpful when she's being shy - or if she's tired or frustrated! (The terrible twos are coming!)

Good Luck - it's a WONDERFUL thing - and you'll be suprised how much you use it too!

We just got Baby see & sign so I can't rate it yet, but the DVD's should really be for the parents. Research shows that babies learn better from actual people than tv, as a previous poster experienced.

I didn't use a DVD when teaching my boys sign language. I went to Barnes & Noble and bought a book that used large pictures and explained everything. It worked great.

Hi A.,

Check out this product. It's great.

Hi A.,

YAY for you wanting to teach your baby to communicate with you! I am all for baby sign language, but have a tiny word of caution.

Assuming your child is not hearing-impared, think carefully about how many signs you want to teach him/her.

My dd has been signing since she was 9 months old, but I only taught her the bare minimum: milk, eat, drink, all done, up, please, more, thank you, I love you. (I think that is all I did.) It is way too cute to see her signing, but more importantly she could communicate her needs WAY before she could talk.

Great, but here is the problem--she REFUSES to speak any of the words she can sign! She is 19 months old now, with quite a strong vocabulary, but she will not say MILK, MORE, EAT, none of her signs!! I am ok with that, but I am glad I didn't teach her more signs, because I am afraid she would be behind on her speech now. (I could be wrong, and I am sure there are other moms out there who would know better than I.)

Again, I am all for teaching baby sign, just be prepared for the possibility that you may have to "see" what she is saying for a longer period.

I just used the Baby Signs book and referred to this site for a visual of the actual ASL signs...

I did buy one video, but my dd was not at all interested in it. But she does not like to watch tv, so that could be why.

Best wishes!

Hi A.,

There is a baby sign language class at Fastrack Kids, that is really good. Here is the website www.fastrackids.com It is located in Plano on the corner of Independence and Parker.

Good Luck,

V.

The DVD's did not work with my daughter. I just got a book from the library and some basics online. I had to use them as I showed her stuff (do you want milk? showed her the bottle and did the sign.) and she picked it upi very quick that way cause she was able to place the signs in her surroundings instead of just generic ones on tv. The key was just being consistant. It helped out SOOOO much teaching her to sign. Good luck!

I taught both my kids sign. My daughter is 18months and started signing around her 1st bday. She knows about 60 signs. I put her in Gymboree's babysigns class at 11 months. You go once per week and they give you a DVD and CD to watch and listen to at home.

I didn't do the class with my son, but did use the older version of the babysigns video and he also picked it up.

However, the class provided a lot of support and if you really want to teach sign to your child, I recommend it.

Good luck,

R.
