Please Help Me with This Lullaby...

My daughter (2 mos) loves the song "you are my sunshine" :) the only problem is, the chorus is the only part of the song I like. (I looked up the lyrics and there is only 1 other verse...and I don't like it as a lullaby...) SOOOOO ~I want to make up a couple more verses that follow the tune. I would start it with the original "you are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skys are gray, you'll never know dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away" and go from there. (I get sick of singing the same one over and over... and other lullabys don't knock her out quite like this one) Im not that great at coming up with song lyrics though, so Im looking for ideas. :) (or full verses... lol)

P.S. Her name is Alina (Uh-LEE-na) if that helps with any rhyming issues...

Here's one:

The other night dear, as I was sleeping
I dreamed I held you, in my arms
My pretty baby, you’re my Alina
I’ll keep you safe and warm

I came up with this for you... I'm gonna use it too!!

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
You make me happy when skys are gray.
You'll never know dear, how much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.
And now it's time, dear, to drift away. (OR - It's time, Alina, to drift away.)
While you are sleeping, know Mommy loves you.
More and more with every new day.

Sunshine is the song my 2 year old son always wants me to sing (now he sings along). The verse about crying isn't necessarily my favorite, but he likes it anyway (he always gives me a hug pat pat at that part now, so I have come to love it!). I sing the chorus, then the verse, then the chorus and end by singing "please don't take my sunshine away" a second time, slower...

Here's a go for another verse to the tune if you like:

The other night dear, while you were sleeping
I came a peeking in on you
So now I dream of
my sweet Alina
And my dreams are all sunny too

Happy singing!

Kind of embarrassing..... but it may be helpful. My mom had always sang that song to me, so when I rock my babies I always sing it to them. I also ran into the same problem and got tired of repeating the same lyrics. I had heard the original song before and racked my brain over what the 2nd part was. I thought I had it right and I have been singing it to my kids this way for 2 years now but after reading this I looked up the lyrics and realized I was wrong lol! However this is how I sing it to my kiddo's...
You are my sunshine my only sunshine
you make me happy when skies are grey
you never know dear how much I love you
please dont take my sunshine away
the other night dear as I lay thinking
I lie awake dear and think of you
cause your my sunshine
my only sunshine
please dont take my sunshine away
~thats how I thought the actual song went! lol

I always sang the baby mine song from the movie "Dumbo" but Allsion Krauss redid it very well. Once I got tired of that one I went to the Sunshine song.

Sorry I'm not much help with other words. I found some sites for you on other lullabyes that may help you find some other songs to sing in addition to You Are My Sunshine. (Side note, You Are My Sunshine is not really a "lullabye but more of a standard, I found some info on that song too)

I am no help, but that is so funny! My son loved that song too, from the time he was an infant, I could sing it and he instantly quieted down. So I went online to find the lyrics and they are kinda messed up! Not something I would want repeated into my kid's head constantly. I always wanted to come up with something else too, but making up lyrics to music is not my thing. Now my son constantly wants me to make up songs about every little thing, and just try making up lyrics about dump trucks! So I hope someone can help you out. :)

I miss those days!! My kids are 12 & 18. My sons liked Billy Joels song Lullabys, Goodnight My Angel. In the car it was Rolling Stones, You Don't Always Get What You Want or Ray Orbisons, Anything You Want (they are twins and opposites). My Daughter loved many songs and we would go through different ones every night and in the car. Still do in the car.
You have some GREAT ideas, just take one or two and tweek it to your Baby as you sing it. You will get it and she will have a memory forever.
Many Blessings.

Here are the actual Lyrics. By Andy williams but unfortunately the additional verses are a bit sad so you may want to tweek them with some of the other ideas provided:)

The other night dear as I lay sleeping
I dreamt I held you in my arms
When I awoke dear, I was mistaken
And I hung my head and I cried

You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you and make you happy
If you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another
You'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once dear, that you really loved me
And no one else could come between
But now you've left me and you love another
You have shattered all of my dreams

You are my sunshine my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You'll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

Sounds like that's a popular lullaby! I sing it to my girls too. Here's how I sing it:

You are my sunshine
My newest sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You'll always know dear
How much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

The other night dear
While you were sleeping
I love to hold you in my arms
You are so snuggly
Oh yes so cuddly
Oh yes I love, to hold you in my arms.

Can't help you with the verses, but I never knew any lullabies with my son except twinkle twinkle. Instead I would sing him things like the Star Spangled Banner, and America the Beautiful, and all those patriotic songs I do know...

Here's a verse that I've written for you. I hope you like it. I'm a songwriter and storyteller and I write custom poems/lyrics, etc. all the time.

My sweet Alina
I love you more than
Anything else in this whole world
And I am thankful
And oh so happy
That you're my precious baby girl

Our children love this song as well!

Our second verse...sung to the same tune...would go like this: "We love you Alina, our little angel...we love you very, very much. We love you Alina, our little angel and we love you very much!" Not super creative...but adds a second verse and we changed the name for when our second child was born. They are elementary age now and still like to hear the song when they have had a bad dream, bad day, etc.
Keep a song in your heart! Enjoy this time!

Find the soundtrack to "oh Brother, where art thou"....(it stars George Clooney and John Turterro (sp) It has all the lyrics....
....although those lyrics, in todays standards, are somewhat questionable.

OK, YouTube "oh brother where art thou you are my sunshine"...and you will get 4 or 5 lyrics.....

Aaaaah the memories that this brings back!!! My Dad sang this song to me when I was little...I sang this to all three of my daughters when THEY were small and now THEY are singing it to their sons...in fact the 29 month old already sings it to us!!! So don't worry too much about singing the same verse over and over...that is what memories are made of. I always sang the 1st and 2nd verses to my daughters, in fact I never even KNEW that other verses existed!! (This was in the day before computers and instance information!). I can see why you wouldnt want to use the other verses...a little gruesome and threatening.
Maybe you could sing the 1st verse again...substituting your little one's name for "sunshine".
Now I will have this wonderful song running through my head all day long!!

Hello,

I also sang this song to my daughter, Haley. I would just put her name in it..."You are my Sunshine, My Haley Sunshine....please don't take Haley Sunshine away." She's now 13 and I still call her Haley Sunshine!

I just rewrote the lyrics for a sing-along at a nursing home. Here is my version. Happy singing!
J., Evanston, IL

The other night dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamt of you and all your charms.
When I awoke dear
You were beside me,
And I held you in my arms.

You have told me
You really love me

I lie awake and think of you
But now that I know
You’ll be my sweet heart
All my dreams are sunny, too

I’ll always love you

And make you happy

And no one else can come between.

Now we will always
Be together
You’re the sunshine of my dreams.

I sang that one sometimes, but my son really loved Rock A By Baby. When he had trouble falling asleep, I had to sing a verse for him, and then each of his stuffed animals (the menagerie was considerable, and he'd point to each one to make sure none of them got left out). I miss it now. He's 11 now and has been too big to fit on my lap for a long time.

I love this question! My version is actually a combination of several that you have received :) I also sang this to my babies.

The other night, Dear,
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamed I held you in my arms.
When I awoke, Dear,
I was mistaken,
So I hung my head and cried...

my mom used to say the old word "hanged"...

Do you sing Brahm's Lullaby, too? I found a version somewhere. It goes like this:

Hush-a-bye and goodnight.
With Roses bedight (bee-dite)
And Lilies bespread
Is Baby's (Alina's) sweet bed.
Close your eyes now and rest,
May your slumber be blessed,
Close your eyes now and rest,
May your slumber be blessed.

(bedight is Old English/Middle English for clothed or arrayed with, as is bespread [possibly the origin of bedspread]) Sorry, I am a word and language lover :)

I did make up my own lyrics for Rock-a-bye Baby:

Rock-a-bye Baby in the treetop.
When the wind blows,
The cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks,
The cradle will fall,
And I will catch Johnny, (And I'll catch Alina,)
Cradle and all.

My son's name really is John, but he doesn't let me call him Johnny anymore :) My daughter's name fit perfectly (Yvonne), as will any two-syllable name. For names as long or longer than Alina you can use a nickname to make it fit. I didn't like the "Down will come Baby" part. I thought it sounded too much like I wasn't going to be there for them. I know, it's just a song :)

I love poems and songs! Give us another! I love getting other people's versions of stories and songs :)
