Its free, then you can 'link' to people in your 'network' which will enable you to get more job leads by networking with those you've worked with in the past.
you basically post your resume online and then it will look at your previous employer listings and locate those that are on the linked in system who've also previously (or currently) work at those companies. You can get them to write you reccomendations or introduce you to someone at the company they are working at. You can easily see who is hiring and apply for jobs etc. and then when you apply for jobs, refer them to your linked in profile. They can see who all has recommended you, etc. Its a great resource.
