I am keeping my 2-1/2 y.o. son home until we find a daycare/preschool that suits our needs. In the meantime, I am homeschoooling him and looking for an activity/play group for him to burn off some energy during the cold months. Any reccomendations or suggestions? He is in URGENT need of play!!!

What can I do next?

Just in case you didn't already know, there is the Hyde Park Parent Support Network (http://www.hydeparkpsn.org/) that has a group listserv where lots of different local and city-wide activities are posted. PSN also has a playroom where different age playgroups get together (posted on the website). Someone already mentioned the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club that has a tot lot (paid) during the week. If you are at all affiliated with the U of C, there is the Family Resource Center (http://grad-affairs.uchicago.edu/services/parents.shtml) which has playrooms and different playgroups meet up as well as planned activities, some free while some for a small fee. There's another group that runs a Friday morning tot lot, calling it Winter Park, for free but is on break at the moment. I believe they are starting back up after the holidays and are located in the basement of St. Paul the Redeemer Church. There's also the winter session of Marsha's Music (http://www.marshasmusic.com/) starting up next week (on the pricier side but I believe worth it for the energy burning aspect and social time for mommy).

I hope those resources help. And congrats on your newest member!

I live in Hyde Park and we have our daughter in a wonderful daycare that just opened in April it is called Kids International, they have kids from all over which is just wonderful and the kids all get along so well. We love the teachers and couldn't be happier with all that she is learning.

I know this doesn't help with play group, but maybe it will help with daycare. Also have you checked into Lil Kickers soccer they offer it at they Hyde Park club and I know they have it during the week day in the mid morning or later after noon.

You've received some good suggestions so far, here's a couple more:

- Chicago Park District parks (Nichols in Hyde Park, others in Kenwood, Hyde Park, Woodlawn, South Shore); check out website for programs

- YMCA on Stony Island (classes/programs and often they have child care for when parents are working out which serves as play group/socialization opportunity).

- Bally's on 47th also has child care (last time I checked) for the play/socialization opportunities.

Good luck.

I'm not aware of any play groups, but, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club offers an indoor play area from 9-12. Not sure if it's every day or not, but it is definitely open on Fridays. It's $5.00 for dropping in. Check out their website for more info (easy to find by googling).
