J.,
It's more of a choking hazzard than anything else. MOST brands are non-toxic. If you are still concerned, call you ped or posion control.

Good luck.

I second the poison control center recommendation. When my 1yo ate play dough I called them to see what I should do. They said to give her something to drink and monitor her breathing. She was fine, but it is scary! I have them in my phone for emergencies and they're extremely helpful.

I would only worry if it is not the Play-doh or Rose Art brand. They are both non-toxic. My kids and I watched something on TV some time ago about how Play-doh came about and how they make it. I would not worry unless he ate a whole lot. But if it is not those brands, check it out.

Everything should be o.k. My daughter (6) for some reason decided she wanted to eat the little dried up playdoh bits on the floor at school. Nothing happened to her. Your son is obviously alot younger, but if the playdoh is not stuck in his throat, I would think he should be just fine..

That's funny, my 11 month old just ate some yesterday! I worried about it for about 5 minutes and then forgot about it to tell you the truth. He's fine today. It says it's not toxic, if you still feel worried about it it wouldn't hurt to call the nurse, that's what they are there for!

I laughed at some of the respondes, because I think we all know a child, even if it was ourselves, that has eaten playdoh. The posion control person was right, a little extra fluids, since any type of play dough has salt in it, which can dehydrate a young one. Watch the breathing, because of allegries. Your sons BM's, may or may not change colors, and your sons BM's also may or may not be a little harder or softer. Just depends on the child. The joys of Play-dough.

Good luck,

K.

What child has not eating play dough and they are all fine. Here is how to make your own.
1 cup flour
2/3 cup salt
1 cup water
1 tablespoon Cream of Tarter
1 tablespoon of oil
Mix all together (divide by 3 add food coloring of choice)

Fry on medium and stir til forms a ball
Roll out, let cool, then form into a ball and store.

My daughter ate a good amount of play dough not too long ago (hubby wasn't watching quite as well as he should have). I hysterically called urgent care and the nurse laughed. There is no harm from eating play dough, except colored poop. Your child should be fine :)

Hi J.,

Your child is probably fine, but if you ever have any concern about something your child ate, call poison control. The number for them is 800-222-1222. My daughter is 3, and I've called them a few times in her life already. Kids put the darndest things in their mouths! I've called them about her drinking curdled milk, eating raw cookie dough, and putting liquid laundry detergent in her mouth. (All of which turned out to be fine!)

The best part about calling poison control is they answer your questions immediately (no waiting for a call back) and you remain anonymous (you only give the first name of the child and your zip code).

I would keep this number handy on your fridge incase of any such issue or emergency. Call them and explain what your child ate - they will tell you exactly what to do and hopefully put your mind at ease.

Hope this helps! : )

It is not harmful to kids. You can make your own, there is a recipe out there. Just watch the bathroom if you are that worried, it will eventually all come out in the end. (sorry :-)

with two older boys I am shocked this is your first time with this question! Totally harmless, you might see some interesting colored poop when it finally passes, but otherwise it's really just salt, flour and water with food coloring. ALL commercially sold play dough is non toxic. No need to call poison control.

As long as the playdough wan non toxic, it should not be a biggie. She might be extra thirsty, but if it was just a little it should pass. My 2 son loves the stuff. He has eaten it, put it in every creavice on his body he could find, and tried to feed it to our dog. Still playdough is cleaner then coloring most days.

playdoh is non-toxic and shouldn't cause much of any problem except for possibly different colored poop from the product coloring. i used to eat it as a kid (yeah i know, ew! but it's pretty common i think) and never had any ill-effects from it, i don't think a baby should unless they are allergic to one of the ingredients or pigments in it.

i have worked with kids for 10 years and I have never come across a child that didnt eat some playdough! The company is secretive about its ingredients but children with dairy sensitivities have reacted to it. Other than that it is non toxic. It is also pretty simple to make your own it just doesnt last as long, but at least you wont mind if she happens to eat it.

For future reference, the people at Poison Control are wonderful, helpful, and non-judgmental! They have the ingredient listing and info for all sorts of products. (OK, now I sound like an expert - have only called twice, I swear :-))

Anyway, 800-942-5969. I keep that and other safety info (how-tos for CPR, etc.) inside my pantry door near the phone. You never know! Handy for babysitters, too.
