My daughter is going to start kindergarten next fall...I know it´s early to think about this but we would like to transfer so the paperwork must be filled out early. Anyway, her school is average but not as great as some of the other schools nearby. We would like to hear from your experiences with specific elementary schools West of Coit rd. I have a few in mind but need some help narrowing them down.

What can I do next?

L.,
I just moved to Plano last January. I moved to the East side, which some people say isn't the best of Plano. My son went to McCall Elementary and I thought it was a great school. They do a lot to get the parents involved. They had math night, science night, and lot of different things throughout the school year. I didn't think they were behind by any means. My son has been in the gifted program for 3 years now, and I think they had a great one there too.

Hi L.,

I know having your baby start school is huge! I still worry about my "babies" and they're in college!

Which Elem. school is it that she is set to attend? As a former teacher and counselor I can tell you that some of those "awards" are meaningless. But most parents do use them as a guide.

As I'm sure you've realized, there are more things to consider than just the ranking of the school. If you transfer her outside your neighborhood, then all her little friends will live somewhere else.

Also, can you count on being able to transfer every year? I know that Skaggs and Matthews (both excellent schools b/c they have great teachers and admin) were moving kids around - much to the dismay of some parents. My point is that the schools are becoming strict about who attends due to overcrowding in some schools.

If you'd like a list of the most recent TAKS rankings you can email me and I'll send it to you. I've got other info if you need it.

I'm here to help,

M.

Hi L.,

I am 30 now but I grew up in Plano and actually attended Saigling Elementary. I remember loving it and still know some of the teachers there. It's basically Coit and Park so I don't know if that is too East for you but I highly reccommend that school!

My son just started kindergarten this fall at Hightower. We love it!! It's an exemplary school. High standards are set for the children, but they meet each child on his/her level and work with them. And tell you how you can work with your child at home to help even more. We love Hightower.
I've heard good things about Daffron, too.
I thought you had to go to wherever you live, geographically based ... I didn't think you could pick which school you want in the district.

Our second grade daughter attends Brinker Elementary and is in the 2nd grade. We absolutely love the school, teachers, and administration. The school had been rated as exemplary for years but was just downgraded to recognized last year. They are hoping to be exemplary again after the next testing period. We feel that the quality of education is still exemplary and our daughter is progressing well.
