From my second ultrasound to the one I had today they have been talking to me about placenta previa and not to worry about it. Today I had my 20 week ultrasound and was told the placenta is still very low lying and the baby was head down. I the tech did not seem phased but within an hour of leaving the office i received a call and one of the doctors reviewed the ultrasound and they said the baby looked great. However I am now on pelvic restrictions meaning that now since i am over 20 weeks and still have thus complication they are starting to restrict my activities. I am worried about this complication and need to know if anyone has had this and any complications that occurred. I am not sure if this is as huge of a deal as they are making it to be or do i need to be more cautious b/c this is no joke.

M.,
I had the same thing happen and while one of the doctors in my group was worried and had my husband and I a total wreck, my regular ob/gyn told me he was just going to watch it. In my case it did move, but had it not they were going to schedule a c-section before I went into labor. From what I have learned in nursing school it can be extremely serious if you go into labor, but with modern technology they can see it before hand (usually). If you are really concerned I can give you the name of my doctor whom I have been with for 22 years and trust him beyond trust; the guy is brilliant with one heck of a bedside manor. My last two kids would not be here if it wasn't for him.

Unfortunatley, it is a big deal. I was lucky in that
the placenta moved aside so I could deliver my daughter.
Complications of placenta previa are hemorrhaging and
loss of baby. Sit back, put your feet up, enjoy your
summer and you will have a beautiful baby in the end.
Good luck.

Be cautious - this is NO JOKE. I had the same thing and was told pelvic restrictions, take it easy, etc. I was not too concerned about it because I was told in 90% of the cases it migrates. I was to have another ultrasound at 28 weeks to see where it was. The weekend before my 28 week ultrasound I went out to register for the baby and spent over 5 hours on my feet - I started a bleed the day before my ultrasound and ended up in the hospital at first expecting to be on bedrest the rest of my pregnancy. Unfortunately the bleed did not stop and I ended up with an emergency c-section within 24 hours. My story has a happy ending. I have a beautiful, completely healthy 2 1/2 year old. Now I am awaiting number two and it is still too early to see if I have another placenta previa. I will tell you if I do. I will not be planning any shopping outings, long time on my feet, any sex, etc. It is not worth it. Be very careful. In fact I had three weddings while I was pregnant with my first and did not get up and dance, stay on my feet etc at any of them. It scares me that if I had I may have started a bleed earlier than 28 weeks and lost my precious little boy. Do everything they tell you and be super careful. Just remember - it is a very short time of your life until the pregnancy is over and you can do everything again after those 40 weeks. Good luck. I do not mean to scare you but you will probably get a ton of people telling you it is no big deal and it goes away - which is true if you are careful and follow doctors directions.

M.,
Why wpuld you think this is a joke?
Don't get very crazed either, but you do have to follow the Dr's instructions. Make sure you follow them to a "T"!!

No, it's not a joke.
They are going to watch how your pregnancy progresses and will keep an eye on things. They want to get you as far as they can to your due date so that the baby will devope well enough in case she has to come sooner than planned. Did they mention if they are thinking a C-section may be necessary? These are things you need to discuss with the physician.
Don't get crazy b/c pleny of women have healthy and full term pregancies with this, but you muct be careful.
If you have questions on what exactly is going on, call your Dr and discuss your questions. Only your Dr. knows exactly what is going on with YOU. And you are not going to relax until your fears are resolved.
I hope all goes well!

I had this also and I did have a C-section at 39 weeks. It was planned from 7 months that I would have to have the section. That really was no big deal and I really didn't have pain etc, so if you have to go the route, don't worry!
As long as the baby is well and you are too, that is what matters! I actually felt very relaxed once I knew what the plan was. I felt like the Dr's had a good plan and all was in control.

Hi Merideth,
Congratulations on your pregnancy :o)
I had placenta previa with my first son (second was just born May 1st). There were no problems with delivery, or baby. Don't worry. Your doctor will tell you if and when you need to be concerned. Until then, just enjoy being pregnant (I know, easier said then done).

I had placenta previa at 23 weeks. I started to bleed one day and went to the OBGYN for an ultra sound. At 20 weeks the placenta was low and no worries. I was on bed rest for 2 weeks and still bleed time to time. I was taken out of work about 25 weeks and was on semi bed rest. I could do a few things. I could not excersice, lift anything heavy and sitting for some reason bothered me. I did 1-2 things a day and mostly rested. Then I had the baby in Sept. This was about May I went out of work. I bled though out the pregnancy, had several ultra sounds and was moniterd toward the end , 2 days a week. They would check the heart beat etc. Sometimes followed by a ultra sound. Then I had a full ultra sound toward the end. For me, the placenta moved, but I still bled. No idea why, to this day. I did go into labor, my water broke, and I delieverd naturally. I was suppose to have a c-section. B/c the placenta moved in time, I could try labor and I did. All went well, it waas 14 hours for me and 4 hours of pushing. I did have an epidural too. My recovery was a lot longer then most, b/c I bled so much. I was a little anemic as well. If you want anyhting else or to talk, give me an e-mail. Take care and good luck.

i had low lying placenta with my first and had a vagina birth (almost 15 yrs ago). i had placenta previa with my second and you will have to have a c-section. i was not thrilled with that, but i do recommend that after the csection, you get a suppository so that the gas that was built up during the surgery is let out. do not take the enima, you may not get to thte bathroom in time.
also, i was restricted with lifting and exercise for you don't want it then to go into placenta abruptia. placenta previa is not unusual, and you may experience some bleeding...then bedrest. i was told that i was lucky because i was only on bedrest for 3 days out of the whole pregnancy and that i held out pretty long for the birth (delivered at 36 weeks). so, it is something to be concerned about and i would restrict myself so that you don't go into labor earlier...which will probably happen anyway. i hope this helps, and if i alarmed you or scared yo, that was not my intention...but it is serious and i'd watch myself. if bleeding occurs, it's dangerous to you as well. so watch yourself and if you have another child (as i did), i stopped picking her up, but gave her tons of hugs! good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear M.,

please DO TAKE THIS SERIOUS. Read about the condition and understand that the placenta is under the babies head and as you progress in your pregnancy, the pressure of your babies head on the placenta is getting bigger. As the placenta feeds your baby it is important to monitor that the pressure does not get too big.
