We are planning a 2 day trip (wht two 6 yr olds and a 9 month old) Pittsburgh.

First, we are going to the Pittsburgh Zoo. Any comments on the zoo, good or bad? How much of a discount does AAA give you on the tickets?

Secondly, we'd like to stay overnight and then do something in Pittsburgh the second day. There are a couple amusement parks, and we were wondering if anyone had any helpful hints about what to visit in the area.

What can I do next?

The zoo is nice! A little expensive, but most zoos are, right?

Check out the Carnegie Science Center & Sports Works (www.carnegiesciencecenter.org) or the Children's Museum (www.pittsburghkids.org) Both on the NorthShore.

You might like Station Square (www.stationsquare.com) and a ride to the top of Mount Washington on the Monongahela Incline (www.portauthority.org/paac/RiderServices/Inclines.aspx). Take your camera!

Kennywood is nice as well if you're in the mood for an amusement park. www.kennywood.com

The Pittsburgh zoo is amazing! I always buy the family pass so I am not sure about AAA-but they do reciprocate with other zoo memberships so if you are a member at your home zoo you can use that.It is built on hills so be preparted to walk!I
I would suggest that you stay on the North Shore-just across from the city. It is where PNC park and Heinz field are as well as the Science Center(your kids would love this!) and the Warhol museum. I would personally do the Hyatt Place because they have a pool for the kids but there are a couple of nice hotels over there. There is a subway station on the north shore that can take you into the city or over to the other side of the city for Station Square- a shopping/dining area. You can catch the Gateway Clipper at Station Square to ride the Good Ship Lollipop around the rivers. Or do a Just Ducky tour that has a bus that turns into a boat. This tour give you a lot of interesting info about Pittsburgh as you go along.
Kennywood is the big amusement park around here. It would be about 1/2 hour from the North Shore.

You can PM me if you have any more questions.

We went to the Pittsburgh zoo a few years ago. We loved it :) It's on top of a mountain and you take an escalator up (very cool for some FL girls) .... Also we went to Kennywood. It's like an old style amusement park. My daughter was 6 when we went and she loooooooooooooved it. I can't remember the prices, sorry.

i love that zoo i grew up going to it! the downfall is that its ON a hill, meaning you have to walk up it to do the zoo, look into getting baseball tickets for the pirates, that would be fun for the whole family, kennywood i wouldnt go to its REALLY REALLY run down. the childrens meusame is an option but the 9 month old really wouldnt enjoy it.

The zoo is excellent as is the aquarium (which is in the zoo). Wear good walking shoes - the zoo is hilly. We are members and if you are a member of your local zoo, they may have reciprocity. The Science Center is excellent. The Children's museum - really not great IMO. The aviary is fun - nice penguin exhibit and you can do it pretty quickly. The Carnegie Museum (art and natural history of two halves of the same building) has a FANTASTIC dinosaur hall, a very good hall of mammals, and an interesting hall of indigenous peoples. The ballpark is gorgeous and a game is a lot of fun (as long as you don't expect the Pirates to win).

We made a trip to Pittsburgh last year with my boys and it was a lot of fun! We are members of the Cleveland Zoo so admission to the Pittsburgh Zoo was discounted if I remember right. We love the Children's Museum in Pittsburgh too....way better than the Children's Museum in Cleveland. We also took a boat ride at the Gateway Clipper. Station Square is a short walk from the Gateway Clipper and my boys liked hanging out there by the water fountains. We also did the Incline. There is lots to do!

We stayed at the Best Western in Greenville. Greenville is a few miles from downtown and it was a decent hotel. The hotel prices in downtown are crazy expensive and we didn't mind the short drive to Greenville. It really was about a 10 minute ride. Have fun!!

I've always wanted to do the Story book Forest that i think is connected ot kennywood.--not sure.

We have done the zoo. It is hilly, We really like the Aquarium that is part of the zoo.

My 7 yos had fun on the climbing ropes and slides at the children's play area. the polar bear and seals and stuff are awesome., Kodiak bears etc not so great. oh and i like the African Savannah part. don't like the gorilla part -just me.

My kids are telling me that their cousins have "keys" that you can buy and insert to hear info about the animals. I don't remember that part.

hope you have a good time .
