My toddler has Pink eye and he won't let me get the drops in. I can get them on the eye area while he is screaming and thrashing. I have tried explaining that he has an eye booboo and needs the medicine, I have tried sneaking up on him, nothing seems to work. Will the medicine get in his eye if I get it on the outside of crying closed eyes?

What can I do next?

Yep the best thing to do is if he is closing his eye is to put the drops in the inner corner of his eye..So much of the drops will go ahead and disolve through this duct and then when he opens his eye the rest will go in. I recommend you using the drops as prscribed because bacterial pink eye is very contagious and can cause damage to his eyes. Good Luck! :-)

It is extremely important that you get those drops into his eyes. If you let it "clear" on its own, it will never totally go away and when it recurs, it will be even worse. With a 20 month old it is hard. You can tell him that you will play pirate with him and he only get to wear the patch if you can put the drops in. Then do the blink game and patch the eye. An hour or so later do the other eye - if the drops are going in both eyes.

Make sure that you do not wipe the "infected" eye with a wash cloth and go to the "non-infected" eye with the same wash cloth. By doing this you risk spreading the infection to the other eye.

Good luck.

When I was a child, if you had pink eye, your mom took a warm washcloth and gently cleaned your eye now and then, and unless it was really bad you went to school. It got better in a day or two by itself, but it hurt unless you kept your eyes closed, and then they'd be glued together and you had to put the warm cloth on again. Unless he has some super nasty strain of pinkeye, it's likely that it'll clear up on its own in a couple of days even without drops. If you get the drops on the outside of his eyes while they're closed and can get him to blink, some will get in the eye. The drops do make it feel better, but I remember having drops put in my eye as a child and it was very scary, seeing a big dropper thing come looming up in front of my eye while my mom tried to hold my eye open. Try just putting the bottle in your fist so all he can see is your hand, don't touch his eye at all, and see if you can smooth the hair off his forehead and get some drops in the inside corner of his eye, where he'll blink them in. And try laying a warm, damp cloth on his eyes, which is soothing.

Interesting to hear that there are drops for the pink eye.....In Russia where I grew up it is something that comes and goes away on it's own......so I am sorry I do not have a way that might help you:(.......but I am sure other moms will:)

Hey. I've been in your shoes. If he won't let you get them in with his eyes open, putting them in the inner corner where the tear duct is located will allow the drops to get into his eyes. My son has had to have drops in his eyes on a regular basis. The doctor informed me of what I've passed along to you.
I hope this helps

Hello S.

sorry to say it will not do much good on the outside of the eyes. Hav you try to do it while he was sleep or on his way to sleep just place him in your arms hugging him loving him and as he relaxing carefully crack his eyes and even if it was one -two drop it will work. Let me know how it turns out.

Ok-- I am living your nightmare. I have a sensitive 4 1/2 year old boy and an insensitive almost 3 year old girl who BOTH had pink eye on Saturday. The MD prescribed 2 drops in each eye 2 times per day. My son was the most difficult-- but I knew he would be-- but by the 3rd day they both got used to it.

Our MD told us that we could put a drop in the corner of the eye with the lid shut and then I asked the kids to "blink it in"--- that way they felt like they had some control- I would cheer them on "Blink..Blink..Blink" and tell them I wasn't putting anymore in while they were blinking. Worked like a charm for my son-- he was asking for drops after a day of that because he became so "good" at taking his eye drops.

Needless to say..... their eyes are all cleared up.... now if we can just get rid of the cold we have right now-- everything would be better.

Good luck and feel free to email me if you need support-- it was a nightmare for me the first 2 days.

Mel
