Ok mom's I know this may sound strange but I was hoping you could help..
I am 36yrs old and have never had pink eye nor has my son. My eyes started getting a little irriated late last week and it has slowly gotten worse. Both of my eyes are now blood shot and burn and have a nasty discharge YUCK!! They are very sore and red and swollen. Could this be pink eye?? I worked last night with this all night and everyone I worked with said it's pink eye and my boss gave me a vacation day so I could have 6 days off to get rid of this because I guess it's very contagious?? If it is pink eye or some sort of eye infection what can I do for it here at home until I am able to see the doctor tomorrow?? I really don't want to give this to my son if it is pink eye he has enough issues already without me giving him this stuff..
Thank you all for any info on this situtation.

Sounds like pink eye to me! Get some antibiotics ASAP! I know it's not fun to have it and you want to start treatment right away. Good luck!

I've had pink eye a million times. You don't have to go to the doctor for it anymore. You can go to Wal-Mart to the eyedrop aisle. Look for the Similisan eyedrops they have a drop made just for pinkeye. It is in a pink and white package. Once you put your 1st drop in and do it for 24 hours you are no longer contagious.

Wash your hands. Keep your hands out of your eyes. Disinfect everything. Expect him to get it, ask the doc for a presciption for him just in case. Fill it when needed.

Sounds like pink eye, as we just finished treating that here. Make sure you get the antibiotic drops from the doctor. Then you will only continue to be contagious for 24 hours after that. You really have to sterilize your home and that is what takes forever. Wipe down door knobs, cabinet doors, the entire bathroom and kitchen, even the handles on the fridge etc. We had to clean all of our kids toys and everything. I used multisurface cleaner to make it less time consuming.

Good Luck, and to ease the discomfort you can use ice packs on your eyes.

Sounds like you've gotten good advice on here, but I would also add that you should get rid of any make up that you use on or around your eye. Disinfect brushes that you use, etc. Yes, this is a bummer, but like many have already said, it's very contagious. Also, if you wear glasses or sunglasses, wash them as well. Obviously if you wear contacts, you should throw them out and get a fresh pair to wear when the pink eye clears up.

I do hope you get to feeling better soon!!!

Pink eye is very contagious! You need to see a physician and get a prescription for a salve to put in your eyes and problably for your son as well if he has the symptoms too.
You need to be very careful, you rub your eyes, touch something and spread the disease.
Wash everything possible with hot water and/or disinfectant. This includes your bedding and pillow covers. You can spray furniture etc., with disinfectant and let it dry completely.
Normally it is under control in three days with the salve and you can return to work/school once you have the medication.

Sounds like pink eye to me (all pink eye is is an eye infection)!! My four kids are very prone to it, they get it every year & pass it around for a few weeks. It's horrible to get rid of.

Good news: with drops you should see a vast improvement in 24 hours.

Bad news: You have to wash EVERYTHING. Bedding, clothing, anything that comes in contact with your face or your hands after you've touched your face (door knobs, telephone, remote controls, light switches). And you might want to use a separate hand towel to dry your hands with.

At the first sign of anyone else in your family coming down with it, call in & see if you can get a prescription. The quicker you start treating, the easier it is to get rid of.

Good luck!

My son is prone to pink eye, and I just call a nurse at his doctor's office and ask her to phone in a prescription for it. It's kind of a waste of a doctor's visit.

100% natural castor oil works awesome I know you can get at health food stores. I even use it on my dog once when his eye was almost swollen shut for some reason and the next day it was back to normal.

Make sure to keep your hands off it. Make sure to constantly wash your hands. Get to the doctor promptly so he can give you antiobiotics for it. Probably drops but if it is really bad maybe something oral too. Once I think you are on the meds for a few days and the discharge is gone you might be ok and not contagious... The weird thing is that my son (my 20mo old) got this probably already 2x in his life. I took care of him the whole time and washed it out frequently w/ a warm rag b/c his eyes were sealed closed every morning w/ the gook. I surprisingly never got it... despite hoping I would for a few days off :) Just alot of hand washing and noone else in the family got it. But yes it is very contagious

My children have contracted pink eye often enough over the last 15 yrs, and it spreads to each child if they don't wash their hands, and you don't wash all the linins and watch that they don't lay their face down on the couch, etc...
Anyway, I was always happier if I was able to use breast milk for eye drops instead of chemical antibiotics. Breastmilk works faster and better, and is a natural living substance with white blood cells and antibiotics in it. Prescriptions work too, but I was never happy to put chemicals in my children's eyes. In any case, it does need to be taken care of, and I wouldn't bank on it clearing up by itself.
There's lots of good advice below :) Good luck!

Until you see the doctor, be sure to wash your hands every time you touch your eyes. Clean your eyes with warm water and wipe from the inside of your eye (closest to your nose) to the outside, wiping only once, then use another clean part of the washcloth, and so on. Wash your towels and washcloths separate from everyone elses and remind the family to wash, wash, wash their hands. The doctor will probably give you eyedrops to take care of the infection. You could also use cool packs on your eyes if the discomfort gets to be too much, use them twenty minutes on and a half hour off, and wrap the ice pack with a clean washcloth each time.

Yes that is pink eye. I would go to the eye doctor or the doctor and they can give you some drops that will clear it up. It is very contagious I caught it from computer keyboards.

Don't forget to wash not only your pillow cases, but your pillows as well. Also wash all bedding, including blankets. You will have to throw away any cosmetics you used on your eyes, including your mascara, eyeshadow and eyeliner. If you wear contacts, make sure you throw away the contacts you were wearing, not to mention your case and any solution you used. You will need to wear glasses until the pink eye is completely gone. Make sure your son and husband don't touch your face at all. If they do, they must wash their hands immediately! Pink eye is awful stuff! If not treated properly, it can just keep coming back.
