"Pill" Instead of D&C - Anyone Experienced?

I was scheduled for a D&C thursday (last tuesday i was diagnosed with a missed miscarraige, baby stopped growing at 8.5 weeks. I would be 12 weeks today). I met with a new doctor (she just completed her residency) and she told me about an option I was not told about before, I can have this tablet inserted near my uterus and it will "induce labor" within the next 12-24 hours. Which means no d&c (no anesthesia, and no scraping of the uterus). Has anyone ever experienced this????

What can I do next?

I haven't but if it's not surgery I would try it. Look up side effects and do research first. D&C can cause damage to your uterus making it harder to get pregnant later.

I would have the D&C. It is the sure thing, if anything doesn't come out with the pill option then you still have
the D&C.

I also opted for this option although the pill they gave me was oral and not vaginal. I took the pill at about 2pm and by 6am I was passing all the tissue. I went in and had an ultrasound done a few days later to make sure everything had passed and it had. I think this is a great alternative to a D&C. Good luck to you and I am sorry for your loss.

I was in the same situation and opted for the pill. Worked great (if u can say great to this). She also gave me percocet (sp) for the cramps. She said why feel more pain then you have to. I still went in for an ultradound after to make sure that all the tissue had passed and a d&c wasn't needed (and it wasn't).

Sorry for your loss. Hang in there.

Кatherine,sorry for your loss.
I had this happen to me last year(lost a baby at14 weeks)
The thing is,you go through the real labor pains with this tablet(at least I did) and still ended up having D&C after all because placenta woudn't come out completely.
I'd choose D&C-it's hard enough for your soul, why go through physical pain also?

Hello,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I am assuming this pill is cytotec. I'm a labor and delivery nurse and cytotec is used to induce labor. Used commonly with fetal loss (less common with live births). I would try that first if it was me. It's less invasive and has pretty good results. I'm saying a prayer for you K.. God Bless.

I'm so sorry! I also had a miscarriage last year. Similar circumstance. I found out at 14 weeks that they baby stopped growing at 10.5 weeks. I couldn't believe it didn't happen on its own. We were going to to a D&c, but my husband was going to be out of town, so decided to wait. While we were waiting our horrible insurance said they wouldn't cover it anyway. I did go with the pill and it didn't seem as scary. I don't think it is for everyone. We all react differently to it. I am sensitive to meds, so ended up bleeding very heavily and ended going to the er. They said I still may need the D&C if everything didn't come out. It did, so I didn't need one, but it was still a possibility.

For me there wasn't a ton of pain because my periods are heavy normally. Some say it is painful and some of my friends say it wasn't. I didn't count on the size of the stuff that came out of me. It really was quite gross and messy. I don't mean to be graphic, but after the fact I wondered if I flushed my baby away and that bothered me, but on the other hand I was able to have more closure being that I felt like I had gone through labor. For the D&C you just go to sleep, which is totally great for some, just not me.

I didn't know anyone who had a miscarriage and didn't know who to talk to so I just thought I would share my experience. It was amazing to me that once I talked about it how many of my friends had experienced the same thing. Again, I'm so sorry!

Although I haven't had this pill, I would be sure this doctor thinks it will be one or the other and not both! I have had two miscarriages - both between 8-16 weeks...and while my body passed it naturally, I still needed D&C afterwards - which by the way I had no anesthesia for either, and honestly, while there was a moment or two of discomfort, I wouldn't go so far as to call it pain. Anyway, my point is, it would be a shame if you had to have a D&C after the pill (and I am sure there would be some pain with induced labor!) if that is what you are trying to avoid! Lastly, I am sorry for your loss...I know it's hard. Don't loose faith, I have a beautiful daughter and am 6mo. into a second healthy and normal pregnancy.

I just did this on Friday. It was to help pass tissue from my miscarriage. The doctor gave me Tylenol 3 for pain and cramping.

It was supposed to work in 6-12 hours. I had a few hours of cramping and it passed in 4 hours. I never needed the pain medicine. My spotting is almost completely gone.

It went very well and I would highly recommend. I also understand that it you can start trying to concieve sooner too.

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions.

Good Luck.
C.
