Picky 1 Year Old?

I need a little help or reassurance. My 1 year old son used to eat pretty much anything and everything we gave him, but lately he's becoming a picky eater. He will usually try a food, but after a few bites he'll turn his head and refuse to eat it. I have always made his food and hardly ever give him pre-packaged food, so I'm trying really hard to do everything right. Even his baby food was somewhat lumpy so I'm hoping he hasn't developed texture issues. He will eat whole foods, but will not eat anything with pasta or meat! He hates pasta?! What child doesn't like mac and cheese? I even made it from scratch?! He won't eat chunks of meat either. I have tried making healthy chicken nuggets and he spits it out. I'm running out of healthy ideas on what to feed him. I can get him to eat most veggies as long as they are mushy. I don't want to constantly mush his veggies, but I'd rather him eat mushy than none. He even refuses to eat foods that he one time loved. I don't know what to do and I'm getting so frustrated because I spend a lot of time making healthy homemade options that usually end up in the freezer or garbage.
I have tried feeding him whatever my husband and I are eating, but this rarely happens as he eats much sooner than our dinner is ready. Also, he will usually refuse the food and start fussing to get down out of his high chair. Oh and once we went out to eat for pizza and my son wouldn't eat it?! Again, what child doesn't like pizza? He'll have a taste of my homemade pizza but will usually spit it out. Sorry for the rambling, but I'm at a loss as to what I should do next.

What can I do next?

What you should do next is quit stressing so much. If he has a few things that he likes to eat that are healthy - be happy. Feed him those things and then introduce others- but make sure he always has some of the "favorites" at each meal so that he will eat SOMETHING! and something new. And yes-it is probably about texture and LOTS of young childen won't eat meat. My 14 year old has never really gotten over that- for her it was (and still is) totally a texture thing. My other kids ate bits of deli meat that I tore into small pieces- not chunks of meat but slices. And kids this age are perfectly happy to eat the same thing for days on end- then they move on to other stuff. Just keep trying things- 12 months is still REALLY young. Lots of 12 month old babies are still eating nothing but baby food. Also his food capacity will really drop off around now- so he will be eating less- practically nothing it will seem. Good luck.

Yeah, I remember my son being pretty picky too. One is still very young but they are starting to develop some sense of likes and dislikes. I think what I did at that time was just start trying new things. They will baffle you for years to come with how they will just love something and then just totally refuse it. As far as pizza goes it might have been a little too much for him as he is young yet. My son didn't go for pizza until closer to two I would say. My son is still a hit or miss for mac n cheese. As far as being concerned about mashing up food, at his age I think it is fine. Some kids are very table ready at one, other's aren't. My son wasn't at all. He like more mushy food up until more like 15-16 months or so. Things like mashed potatoes, green beans, mac n cheese(I know he doesn't go for it today but he might come around), really soft shredded chicken(sometimes), bananas, pretty much any veggie mashed, oatmeal made nice and soft. I know at that age I used those little dinners that Gerber makes sometimes, and I used them as meal ideas at home as well. I still relied on jarred meats for a while and my son is 2 now and still doesn't eat tons of meat. For snacks I would do pudding, nutrigrain bars, etc. I tried to introduce texture slowly and after a while he caught on. I think he sounds like he is doing good, you can also always get online and look up typical foods for a 12 month old, I got lots of ideas that way as well. That is a tough eating age, but they get through it and so do you!:) Good luck!

It's all about texture! I made almost all of my son's baby food, and by 1 he ate pretty much what we ate, just smaller, softer, and without the spices. It also helped that we all ate together. Does your son go to bed before you and your husband eat? If so, you might want to sit with your son and have "dinner" with him. Good luck!
