Photographing 12 Month Old

We are getting our 12 month old daughter's pics taken in a couple weeks at Picture People and I am nervous about how it will go. Any advice/recommendations are greatly appreciated. I was specifically thinking about how many outfits to bring, the best way to keep the tears to a minimum (tried to schedule the appt after lunch and nap, but that can vary day-to-day), and if you have used Picture People whether you were pleased with how the pics/service turned out. TIA!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We ended up canceling our appt with Picture People and scheduling with Portrait Innovations after the advice I got here. We were so pleased with Portrait Innovations we will be going back.

The only complaints I had were 1) the wait (of course we had to schedule our appt on a Sunday afternoon, so I cut them some slack) and 2) they made my decision on poses so difficult we had to buy several. ;) Not a complaint on the establishment, just my pocket book!

Thanks to everyone for your input!

I worked at a competing studio & probably two outfits is probably a good limit.
So have them in their first outfit upon arival, the one you like the most incase things go arie-smiles!
U will probably only be in the photo room for at most 25min if even that. Also good if you stanf behind the photographer to help your child smile/comfortable.
-hope it goes well

I am a professional photographer in the area, and operate my own business here. I have seen photos done by Picture people, and have had clients who were not pleased with their results, and then came to me and were thrilled. If you want to check out a little bit of what I do, go to
www.ashleyparsonsphotography.blogspot.com
I would be thrilled to answer any questions you may have! I believe that the pictures you have taken professionally are a HUGE deal, because they should be good enough to last you a lifetime, and this is why I am so passionate about what I do.
Good luck!

We always take our daughter to Target (they are much cheaper because we get coupons for great deals) and they have always done a great job! You can see Meadows most recent 1 yr photos at my xanga site: www.xanga.com/divadeveri. I have made a slideshow recently. We always bring her about three different things to wear... since her birthday is so close to Easter we brough the Casual outfit to take pictures with her lovey (her piggy) and then the cute dress to do the birthday pics... and then the nice easter dress with the bunnies and easter eggs. We have taught Meadow to hold up her little finger as "one" when we ask how old she is going ot be... and we got a good pic of that... please feel free to check out that page and see the slideshow if you want! We have taken the professional pics three times now and we havent had a bad experience yet... they have always turned out great because she is so photogenic... we always schedule it for a saturday morning... after her long morning nap... we have had great luck with that! Let me know if you need any other advise!

Personally, I don't think Picture People does that great of a job with younger kids most times. I'd recommend going to Portrait Innovations if you have one close. They do 2 different outfits, take 40-60 photos(picture people only takes 20-30)with 4-5 different backgrounds. Picture people only gives you 2 backgrounds and sometimes you have to ask them to change the background otherwise you have all the same background.
Good luck and hope they turn out great.

We went to a Picture People to ahve a big family picture taken and I personally thought it was terrible. We didn't get to choose the picture we want, we weren't centered in the picture and the light was bad (some of us had a shadow!) I would really recommend cancelling the appointment and going to Portrait Innovations (you can visit their website www.portraitinnovations.com to find a location)! They have a special for $10 where you pick one pose and get TONS of pictures. You can take 2-3 outfit changes and they have lots of backgrounds. Not to mention you get to look at ALL of the pictures (which they take between 50-100+) and pick the one that you like the best!! Staff is very friendly and help get the child to smile!! We take our daughter there all the time and she is 15 months!! Hope you like them too!

We used them at Christmas for our entire family and they were great! My kids are older but there were several little ones there that day- the place is like a playground. I remember one mother changing her childs outfit 3 times during the session. They take tons of pics so anymore than that and you'd have a really hard time choosing I think.
They work with lotsof kids and they all seemed very patient. I'm sure your daughter will do fine. Good luck, I hope your experience is as good as ours =)

I am not sure or have any advise yet- I am going for my new borns photos in a week but just wanted to mention that I found a great place through another mother & can't wait. They have a special package for babies (you will see on their website). They are located in Olathe. The website is www.Bellakc.com

If anything, just check out their website. The photos are so nice & I have seen other work than just what they have posted on their website!

Good luck!

I did all my kids pics at Picture People their first year (we went each month until their first birthday so I have 8x10s of them "growing" their first year!) We only did it a Picture People b/c they always printed the free 8x10 coupons, so we went in and got the free 8x10 and usually didn't buy anything else--I know I'm a cheapskate! I really think they are way too overpriced, I would have loved to buy extra prints most of the time but just couldn't afford it.
For my daughter's 1st bday pictures I took her to Portrait Innovations at the recommendation of a friend and was ABSOLUTELY totally impressed! They had a gazillion props and backgrounds, they took 57 poses of her! We did 2 different outfits that day. It was so hard deciding what poses to take, but they cost so much less than Picture People so I was able to take about 5 pose packages home for around $80.00. That was a splurge for me, but they did such a great job on her pics that I couldn't pass them up :)
Good luck though, I think you would do well to let her eat and nap before going. And just stay close by and continue to talk to her so she can hear your voice and be comforted. It also helps to stand behind the camera and make faces at her so when she laughs at you or smiles back it seems like she's doing it into the camera.
